Italo Disco in San Francisco ... ?!

So, last night started out terribly. I was at a club, and the best track they played for the twenty minutes I was there had to be "Sex Dwarf." Great song, but usually better drunk at home than dancing in a club.

A friend easily convinces me to elsewhere. "Let's go there's this italo night at some gay club. It's amazing."

Unsure, I commit myself to going. In my head it sounds like a bust. First of all it's in a shit neighborhood, and usually an "italo" night ends up being bad indie rock or something.

The picture on the flyer for this night has a mountain of men behind Grace Jones, and below it says "Tubesteak Connection" ...

This was, musically, the greatest night of my life. The DJ was an older gentleman with the most amazing record selection I've ever heard. There was only one track I recognized the hour we were there: 'Lectric Warriors - "Robot is Systematic." The night was so good it was almost a joke. I can't even understand.

San Francisco has an amazing italo night run by older men from a random gay club downtown. Holy shit. If you live in SF, you should really go next Tuesday. I guess it's their 2 year anniversary, and I've NEVER heard about it!!!

AMAZING.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 14 April 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, it's easily the best night in San Francisco. apparently the fact that it is at a gay club has kept it a secret from the indie/electronic world.

this place is amazing. super small, super packed, dim red lights, and the best music i've heard in this city.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 14 April 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

I never woulda guessed - every time I went by there it seemed to be populated by older, bitchy queens (one of my favorite types of people, btw). But then I was mostly there around 6pm on weekdays. And this was at least 3 years ago.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 14 April 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

He also does a Friday night club every so often. The night is called The Rod. It's happening tonight, so if you blew it and missed Tubesteak last night, you can still get some DJ Bus Station John goodness . . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 14 April 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Drew, where is The Rod? I'm thinking of going, but I'm clueless as to the location. I thought there was a Satuday at SF Underground called The Rod. Am I mistaken?

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 14 April 2006 19:55 (nineteen years ago)

I personally challenge all ILXors to enter the WET JOCKSTRAP CONTEST at "The Rod" tonight. Here are the details of the club event tonight, with many equal signs inside the text:

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 14 April 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

I was with Cameron last night. It was unbelievable. Best night out in years. We were @ Arrow where the music was same old S.F. B.S. and it was like a magic fucking music fairy (i.e. Lauren) came down and pointed us in the direction to gay times (in so many ways)

Fuck it's awesome.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 14 April 2006 20:53 (nineteen years ago)

am i gonna have to like, cruise, if i go here?

Jaxon von Jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

TOM CRUISE THAT IS

Jaxon von Jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, what's the deal with ppl advertising "cruising" on their handbills or fliers? like, can't i decide if i wanna cruise when i get there, or is it a prerequisite for entry to be on the hunt? isn't everyone there cruising anyway?

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

never mind about the last part; i know not everyone's out cruising, but still why advertise it?

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

cuz it sounds better than "COME GET LAID"

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:10 (nineteen years ago)

It does?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

i hope it's not a prerequisite. specially since i'll prolly be there w/my wife

Jaxon von Jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

maybe not better but less obvious and slightly sexier

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

speaking of rad, super gay things in SF. i went to Lime last night. soooo good.

Jaxon von Jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

Tom Cruise would be just about right...

I was there last night and I am still giddy about this. I have been searching for something like this out in the city since I moved here a year ago. Last night was like Christmas morning for me, and such excitement caused me to drive on the sidewalk with only two drinks in me. (Sorry guys.) I may have to return to the TL for a redux tonight...

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

people in the bay needing to be obvious about what their about instead of just letting it happen shocka. not that it would have to detract from the thing, b/c if the music is good that's probably all i'd need. except no, it does detract. i'm sort of sick of the we are so liberatingly sexual and yet there is very little sexual energy in sf. i'd rather lay drunk in the middle of the bay by myself.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:18 (nineteen years ago)

ignore me i am bitter

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Chantilly, if you want to go again, I'm down.

Cruising? Eh, it wasn't really crazy or anything. I mean, it is a gay bar, and there are plenty of guys there to get laid, but it's still a dance night. In fact, I would imagine that there are several straight music dorks there, myself included.

Personally, I think it's silly to pick up on the term "cruising" when so many other nights are only two steps away from the "bitches and blunts" mentality of Top 40 rap. However, unlike most of these scenester nights, with shameless self-promotion and false promises of decadence, Tubesteak Connection actually delivers GOOD music.

For further information, check this out. And check this out.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

it just seems like once upon a time people were actually desperate and not desperate to appear desperate. i guess if i'm drunk it doesn't matter.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, to be authentically desperate again....

M. Biondi (M. Biondi), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:25 (nineteen years ago)

i'm sort of sick of the we are so liberatingly sexual and yet there is very little sexual energy in sf. i'd rather lay drunk in the middle of the bay by myself.

With an attitude like that, anybody with sexual energy is probably avoiding you.

This Italo disco night sounds fuckin' sweet; who really gives a shit if the bill says "Lets fuck"?

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

haha. uh, cameron, i've met you. you're actually myspace friends w/my wife. i met you at the orbit room for peggy's bday.

Jaxon von Jaxon (jaxon), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

I used to think I should try doing something like that to a gay audience in NYC then I decided they only wanted to hear circuit house. Then some folks started something similar, not in a gay bar but a relatively (then) unknown club in the west village, Dance Homos Dance present Cazzo Pazzo. It didn't work.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

who really gives a shit if the bill says "Lets fuck"?

-- QuantumNoise (heavy_music200...), April 14th, 2006

I don't really care that it says 'let's fuck'... but at that rate, why don't you just say 'let's drink,' too? i mean, why the fuck else do people go to clubs? to make friends? chat about the weather? it just sounds like a kinda lame directive.

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 14 April 2006 21:55 (nineteen years ago)

Jaxon von Jaxon ... i remember you! haha. the Orbit room is great. hope things are going well.

also, i'm giving you a guarantee that you are not required to "cruise" if you go ... but you may be required to dance!

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the jockstrap night advertises both "heavy cruising" and "hard cocktails" Ha!!!!

Call me naive but people do seem to go to clubs for other reasons than "heavy cruising" and "hard cocktails". I mean, not all clubs ( and gay clubs) are going to have the atmosphere this place is going to have when those jockstraps get soaked.

Also, was the word "cruising" big in the late-70s and early-80s when this music was big? Maybe they're using it as a kind of retro-affection. Al Pacino would be able to tell us.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

Well, the jockstrap night advertises both "heavy cruising" and "hard cocktails" Ha!!!!

well, you definitely got me there.

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

noted Quantum. need to ammend attitude (and grammar -what *they're* ,not their, doing. ack!) so I can come out of the bay and into the mix. i guess. hard cocktails sounds good.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

so for us in the south bay that can't make it up to the city on weeknights how is the saturday night thing?

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

saturday night is good to us tomorrow.

Kontrol! (feat. Pan/tone) @ the RX Gallery.

Their parties are always great fun, definately techno. Then there are always other things ... Beauty Bar, etc.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

Susan, I was just messin' around, really. Everyone should just party!

Kontrol is awesome. That's where I'm headed this weekend.

And don't forget Matthew Dear is playing BOCA on 4/22.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

Matthew Dear as AUDION, that is.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:45 (nineteen years ago)

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Friday, 14 April 2006 22:47 (nineteen years ago)

this sounds great, i think i'm gonna go next week. i'll be at Kontrol though...
speaking of which, those guys just started an unnamed weekly at BOCA, on Thursdays as well. i played last week to a dead crowd (but it was their first night), so start going and let's get that shit started! we can bounce back and forth between aunt charlies & boca for maximum tekno!

something less threatening (heywood), Friday, 14 April 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

We were actually one of the 3 people at the Kontrol event last week and decided to switch it up this week due to the lack of turnout and curiousity about this newfound treasure. I do love me some Kontrol. It's a good thing the venues are so close to one another. I'm definitely down for past, present, and future all in one night. Thursdays have just gotten better.

Chantilly Bass (ChantillyBass), Friday, 14 April 2006 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

Hopefully he won't lull us to sleep this time...

I've been listening to his Audion stuff a bunch, and it's pretty heavy.

aw, marke... the man who coined the phrase "precondom leather look" (note the confident lack of hyphen). it's why i love you, you know. i'll come cruising anytime with you.

Let's Get Physical
Bus Station John spins rare vinyl into golden opportunities
By Brock Keeling
Article Published Apr 26, 2006

"You can be a mess here," DJ Bus Station John says as the bartender serves up another round at Aunt Charlie's Lounge. Having helped revive the sleazy and sexually charged gay club scene in San Francisco, one that nearly died almost a decade ago, he should know.

It's been just over two years since Bus Station John started "The Tubesteak Connection" at Aunt Charlie's, a porn-ish weekly of hi-NRG and disco curiosities that began as a showcase for John's enviable collection of late '70s and early '80s gay bar and bathhouse beats. Today his party is a yardstick by which others are measured, also marking its dive-y venue as the epicenter for Thursday night frolicking. "It brought a whole new crowd to the Tenderloin who would never normally come here," says bar manager Joe Mattheisen, adding that the place is regularly filled to capacity come midnight.

Since then, John has helmed two other disco-heavy club nights — the larger and more sexually aggressive "The Rod" at Deco Lounge (every second Friday of the month), featuring a tongue-in-cheek wet jock strap contest, and the early '80s New York City soul-laced "Double Dutch Disco" at the Transfer (every third Saturday of the month). The Bus Station trinity is coveted for both the music and the crowd it attracts. His scrappy and nerdish patrons are refreshingly prone to cruising and getting smashed. But what ultimately makes his events unique is a hard-to-pull-off retro vibe that abstains from irony. His mixed following (well, "[m]ixed only in the sense that it's a mixture of all kinds of queers," as he bluntly puts it) come to enjoy the music, to get loaded at a deliciously sordid locale, and, well, to maybe fuck another boy.

By his own admittance, John doesn't think of himself as a normal DJ. "I don't have the skills ... I'm not Mr. Beat Scientist, or whatever," he says. In lieu of seamless sets, he's more of a mix-tape-ish guy, with no kind words for the new mash-up sound. Instead, he'll break out the most oddly beautiful disco and new-wave rarities this side of time-traveling capabilities. Club promoter and writer Marcia Gagliardi gushes, "[H]e is truly old school — and it extends to his value system, too ... a total cream puff of a guy, with disco sprinkles on top."

Having lived in San Francisco since 1987, John has seen the city go through everything from AIDS to dot-com hedonism to today's Internet-ification of the one-night stand. "There are very few old-school gay dive bars left; they're dying out everywhere," he pines. He blames the downward spiral on the dawn of the Internet age, where the proliferation of personal ads substitutes for in-person flirtation. John's clubs bring back that old personal touch.

It's a touch that extends to his coveted record collection, the source of which he's notoriously tight-lipped. Award-winning DJ Jefrodisiac admits, "I've never ... heard a San Francisco DJ and thought, 'I wish I had those records,' except for Bus Station John, period." John is also quiet about where he gets his splendid porn collection, pages of which he uses for flyers and as a garnish for the walls and bar tops at his clubs. The late '70s, handlebar-moustache-heavy images work twofold, setting a tone for not only the era but also helping typically rigid hipsters to loosen up. And although the scene he attracts is typically frequented by chic and wrinkle-free throngs, John equally cherishes the rare moment when generations collide, when "someone my age or older comes up and says, 'Oh my God, I haven't heard this in 20 years. Thank you.'"

i've heard his sets are pretty solid

sanskrit, Friday, 13 July 2007 02:30 (seventeen years ago)

I just learned San Diego isn't far from LA. Is that true?

Let me tell you about Queens. First of all, I'm the only person I know who hasn't DJ'd PS1 Warm Up, so a big WTF to that. Second of all, still waiting for my invite to the Water Taxi Beach. Hello, I LIVE IN QUEENS! I'm just not on the map anymore, boo hoo.

But lets talk about what Queens is REALLY about. Let's talk about Sidetracks on Queens BLVD. One of the bookers there actually came down to Dazzle Ships when DJ Loda was in town because he read the write-up in Time Out, said he likes to check out the old-school DJs. This guy was a classic DJ from the early days of disco, knew all those guys you can read about in Love Saves the Day, back when disco was as much about italian dudes from the island as it was anything else. But I think it's a pretty mainstream house/club/KTU kind of scene there, I don't know if they're looking for vintage Walter Gibbons mixes. Then there's Jackson Heights, the center of the gay latino community, from what I hear it's all salsa and whatnot, but what about freestyle? Where's the new version of the Fun House? What DO they play at the Bum Bum Bar?

Anyway, I didn't mean to derail this thread. I'm down for DJing in Queens.

dan selzer, Friday, 13 July 2007 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

dan, might you bring me a sonic youth sampler in SF?

Ship them UPS "Media Rate" from a location that has a UPS account.

Steve Shasta, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

I'm always greatly amused/puzzled by this - how did Italo become so linked to gay subculture in the US? Over here, the Italo scene in the 80s (as well as the Italo-retro club nights of today) were almost exclusively hetero, working class types driving Capris, Mantas and Camaros. And it wasn't much different in Italy at the time either...

Siegbran, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

Same way disco became linked with the gay subculture here.

Italo never had the whole It's Raining Men/I Will Survive gay diva angle though.

Siegbran, Thursday, 19 July 2007 12:22 (seventeen years ago)

It did have it's aggressive menergy style though, remember one of the first major italo records is I'm a Man by Macho.
