I know there's already a similar thread, but it was bands "of last ten years". I mean Sonic Youth forward...

Minor Threat?
Minutemen?
Black Flag?
Meat Puppets?
Husker Du?
Dinosaur Jr?
Germs?
X?
Replacements?
Mudhoney?
Butthole Surfers?
The Fall?
MBV?
Pavement?

All above, probably not

Sonic Youth
Nirvana
Pearl Jam

probably yes

how twisted is that

Anyone know if following are in...Television, New York Dolls, Jonathan Richman, Suicide?

douglas eklund (skolle), Saturday, 15 April 2006 21:38 (twenty years ago)

The Fall will get in eventually.

Pavement will probably follow soon after.

I don't think any of the bands you listed are in there.

Ant, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

i thinks that the indie is just to revolutionary and subversive to get into the rock and roll hall of fame. they will put bands like the mighty mighty boss tones and rancid in before they put any proper rock and roll bands like superchunk in.

Dec, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Don't be daft the Rock 'n Roll hall of SHIT is more likely to put a pop group Less Than Jake in before they put a great band like Rancid in.

Brinx, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:27 (twenty years ago)

wtf? rancid are awful some punk/indie bands that should go in;

Archers of Loaf
Polvo
Kingmaker
Mx-80 Sound
Sufijan Stevens
Echobelly
Mission of Burma
Radiohead
Jesus and Mary Chain
Gene
The Smiths
Doves
The Divine Comedy
Dogs Die In Hot Cars
Coldplay
Slowdive...

Dec, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:33 (twenty years ago)

I think its higly likely that, from recent times, bands like Dogs, Be Your Oewn Pet, and Milburn will be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, where they belong!

Spaceman Joe, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:37 (twenty years ago)

who the fuck are you people?

Binjominia (Brilhante), Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:42 (twenty years ago)

wtf most of the great britpop bands have been ignored by the rock and roll hall of fame. i mean are the kinks in there? the small faces?powder? t rex? the jam? the divine comedy? the specials?

Dec, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Wid all due respect, Dec, those all seem a little subpar (Sufjan Stevens? Coldplay?) in terms of importance exc. for Mission of Burma and The Smiths, I guess, but thanks!

douglas eklund (skolle), Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:44 (twenty years ago)

Hello Green Day

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Perhaps we should look at some possible candidates and do positive/negative rundowns for them?

Spaceman Joe, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:45 (twenty years ago)

For instance, The Zutons:

Positives:
* Revolutionized music
* Pretty much created psychodelica, as well as adding a new thread to indie's rich tapestry
* Innovative use of instrumetns like saxophone
* Big fanbase

Negatives:
* Maybe not "pop" enough for the hall of fame, unlike Less Than Jake
* Hall of Fame might find it "politicallyincorrect" to put an entirely white band in.

Spaceman Joe, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:47 (twenty years ago)

i think sufijan and coldplay are really likely to go in! look how important and acclaimed and ambitious sufijan has been so far, think what he may go on to achieve! also coldpaly are very popular and that always is popualr with the hall of fame.

Dec, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:49 (twenty years ago)

None of the bands listen in this entire thread are likely to ever get into the RNRHOF except for Nirvana (and possibly Sonic Youth or Pearl Jam).

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:50 (twenty years ago)

Gene? Echobelly?? KINGMAKER????

For fucks sake.

They wouldn't even get into the hall of underpants.

Ant, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Fall Out Boy

Positives:
*Have an NME cover forthcoming, an essential thing for any Hall of Fame contender
* HoF may want to cash in on the Myspace craze at some point
* "Dance Dance" is one of the fifteen best songs ever

Negatives:
* Highly unliekly they'll have the career longevity of Milburn or The Cribs, two bands who are pretty much locks for the "heinous hall" as you call it on this forum
* Again, the selectionc ommittee are unfairly biased towards more rhytmic black musicians rather than good honest hard-working white guitar acts.

Spaceman Joe, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, who's holding the usual ILMers hostage?

douglas eklund (skolle), Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:54 (twenty years ago)

I think you have to be famous to start with to get into the hall of fame.

fandango (fandango), Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Is this supposed to be a serious thread?

Just wondering, like.

Jeff K (jeff k), Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:56 (twenty years ago)

i think many of the bands i listed are going to be crittically reappraised very soon. kingmaker are now an au fait influence to many new bands in the same way the new york dolls ans the velevt underground were to punk rock bands. don''t write off bands just cos they sold no records!

Dec, Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:58 (twenty years ago)

I like it when one person invents 16 personas and starts the most bonkers discussion possible!

What will be funny is Johnny's response when, despite his anti-Pistols in the Hall of Fame outburst, PiL is added next year. That's gonna be awesome.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 15 April 2006 22:59 (twenty years ago)

I think something similar may happen with Chris McCormack. He's been pretty adamant that 3 Colours Red will never joint the hall of fame due to political reasons (I think its something to do with the Iraq war, does anyone know?), but apparently Grand Theft Audio arve very likely to get inducted in a few years time.

Spaceman Joe, Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:02 (twenty years ago)

i think symposium will be picked over 3 colours red though their infamous stance on abortion may rule them out. i imagine kula shaker despite reintroducing eastern music to the west will ahve similar problems cos of the crispian mill's nazi affiliations.

Dec, Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:04 (twenty years ago)

Ok, Ok, enough of the sarcastic non-answers, point made!!!

douglas eklund (skolle), Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:09 (twenty years ago)

Kingmaker were horrible.

Loz Hardy does Karaoke in a pub in Stoke Newington most weekends. he's not too bad but he's hardly Lou Reed.

Ant, Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:10 (twenty years ago)

Any of this lot seem dead certs if music criticism carries on the same trajectory of the 2000's;

• Silver Jews
• The Futureheads
• Ted Leo/Pharmacists
• Art Brut
• Destroyer
• Mountain Goats
• Band of Horses
• Man Man
• Hot Machines
• Dominik Eulberg
• Matmos
• Ada
• Ghislain Poirier
• 8 Bold Souls
• Os Mutantes
• Spoon
• Yo La Tengo
• Devendra Banhart
• Mission of Burma
• Aesop Rock
• The National
• Jens Lekman
• Tapes 'n Tapes
• Chin Up Chin Up
• Diplo
• Tarantula A.D.
• Tyondai Braxton
• Bonde Do Role

Brinx, Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:11 (twenty years ago)

It'll be interesting to see if they initiate Dipset as a collective, or if they'll just allow Hell Rell, 40 Cal, and Freeky Zeeky as seperate individuals.

4/10 please use more funnies.

Mingus Realty (noodle vague), Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:31 (twenty years ago)

And not a single mention of The Farm. Tsk.

dr lulu (dr lulu), Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:32 (twenty years ago)

The Farm would clearly have been a step or 5 beyond credibility.

They could have used Northside or The High, though.

Mingus Realty (noodle vague), Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:36 (twenty years ago)

do you think baggy will be recognized it has yet to catch on in the usa. i imagine emf or jesus kones are the most likely baggy bands to go in to the hall of fame.

Dec, Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

The farm were instrumental in bringing Jamaican music to a wider audience with their "toasted" singing. I think it's not too much of a stretch to say that Sean Paul, Sizzla, and Beaney Man would not be recording today if it wasn't for The Farm (so perhaps the farm shouldn't be nominated lol!)

Spaceman Joe, Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

x post

You're forgetting World of Twist, my friend.

Mingus Realty (noodle vague), Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:40 (twenty years ago)

cos i mean in britain stone roses, happy mondays and candy flip are revered in the usa most people even people in bands and people who write for blogs and music websites such as stylus don't really care much for them.

Dec, Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:42 (twenty years ago)

I think PaulMccrtney can thank Candy Flip for the Beatles being in the fall of fame, their "Strawberry Fields Forever" cover really brought the "Fab 4" back into the spotlight after 20 years of post-split obscurity.

Spaceman Joe, Saturday, 15 April 2006 23:43 (twenty years ago)

I think Final Fantasy are an early contender for the Hall of Fame.

i don't think people are taking seriously the discussions here. this place is worse than fark.

Dec, Sunday, 16 April 2006 00:05 (twenty years ago)

The complete list is here: http://www.rockhall.com/hof/allinductees.asp.

Artists become eligible 25 years after the release of their first record. The Kinks, btw, were inducted in 1990.

The list of bands that can be considered even remotely punk/indie that are in the hall is pretty short:

1996
David Bowie
Velvet Underground

2002
Ramones
Talking Heads

2003
The Clash
Elvis Costello & the Attractions
The Police

2005
Pretenders
U2

2006
The Sex Pistols
Blondie

LOCK THREAD

lf (lfam), Sunday, 16 April 2006 05:39 (twenty years ago)

It seems an act has to be huge in America to be considered for the RRHOF, which means most mid 90s Britpop acts are not likely to be in there. Maybe Radiohead though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 16 April 2006 09:23 (twenty years ago)

Artists become eligible 25 years after the release of their first record

Which means Duran Duran, Soft Cell and Depeche Mode are eligible this year. Depeche Mode are not at all an unlikely inductee, I guess.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 16 April 2006 16:07 (twenty years ago)

i was having this discussion with my girlfriend about this, Sonic Youth's DDN was just added to the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, that pretty much seals it for them

but to actually make a real observation and not add some weird bands that are not influential, of all the ones mentioned above the most likely to make it in are:

Patti Smith (should have been inducted 4 years ago)
Black Flag (maybe, it would be due to Henry Rollins alone)
Sonic Youth
Nirvana
Pearl Jam (they are great but not the most original, but then again they did induct Aerosmith)
REM
Radiohead
The Smiths

those who deserve to make it but probably won't

Devo
B-52s
Television
Joan Jett
Pixies (my girlfriend think they will head in, i just don't see it)
Soundgarden
Pavement
Sleater-Kinney (on the cusp, but they just might make it)
Slayer (not punk or indie at all, but they are only gonna induct Metallica, when Slayer is just as deserving)

pantophobia, Monday, 17 April 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I had a hard time deciding if posters to this thread were 14 years old or just joking. I think I've settled on just joking, but it would be a better joke if they were totally serious 14 year olds.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Monday, 17 April 2006 17:51 (twenty years ago)

BTW: I think the Pixies reunion tour made it less likely that they'll be inducted. Better to be a short-lived influential darling than a money-grabbing nostalgia act in the minds of elitist voters. It didn't hurt the Pistols though.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Monday, 17 April 2006 17:52 (twenty years ago)

the RnR Hall of Fame is going to fall into disuse when all the baby boomers die off - it will slowly slide into "forgotten relic" status, like the wax museum or the corn palace or the trees of mystery.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 17 April 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

I'd also be curious to know if there are any bands who have been inducted in the HoF that didn't get a Rolling Stone magazine cover during its prime. My hunch is no... That narrows the field a bit.

Please welcome your 2025 inductees:
Backstreet Boys
N'Sync
Kid Rock
Sugar Ray
Britney Spears

VU? Probably a lot of the early inductees as well.... (Point still made though...)

the RnR Hall of Fame is going to fall into disuse when all the baby boomers die off

Lots of current kids are into "classic rock".

Rock is not at all likely to die, and the best works will be remembered in hundreds of years the way Mozart, Beethoven and Bach are today.

Hip-hop will be completely forgotten about in 30 years though.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 17 April 2006 20:47 (twenty years ago)

we're talking about in america hongro. you might be right though, they probably are better off in the long term building the thing in norway.

They've been saying that since the first commercially available hip hop releases, which came out about 30 years ago.

I think it's safe to say they'll only induct punk/indie bands that
someone like, say, David Crosby, can recognize the names of.

ramon fernandez (ramon fernandez), Monday, 17 April 2006 21:06 (twenty years ago)

I would never tell them this... but this... this is a FAD.

(and Geir I didn't say RnR was gonna die, just that the weird timecapsule definition of rock that the RnR Hall of Fame subscribes to is gonna be abandoned/laughed at/consigned to the dustbin of history)
