i gotta go with ultimate breaks and beats on pure insane historic significance

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 02:41 (twenty years ago)

this is basically like a test to see if nate patrin checks in on ilm this week

I'm seriously addicted to comps like these. The lend themselves to some sort of crazy collector-mania. Like, I seriously can't believe how good those Soul Patrol comps are. And they just keep cranking them out and cranking them out!! you would think every last dusty scratchy average-singing but awesome-sounding JB-ripoff local rarety from this era had already been anthologized, but you would be very wrong!

also I forgot to mention Numero Uno and Cold Heat! and Jazzman!! like all those great Jazzman 45 comps plus the regional shizz like Texas Funk, Midwest Funk, etc.

man i can remember when i was a kid and being aware of ultimate breaks (maybe john leland mentioned it in passing - i remember being obsessed about wanting to hear 'ashley's roachclip' becuz of him) but sure as hell never actually coming across it in an athens record store BUT i did come across james brown's funky people and man OPENED MY EYES, rocked my world like few other things.

haha just caught that this is surely a sister thread to the garage comps thread

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 02:55 (twenty years ago)

yeah I mean I totally remember reading Leland raving about like some rare Spoonie Gee track and being all "oh yeah it has that great 'Impeach the President' sample", and I'm thinking "How does he know that????" and also, "How can I hear that????".

Yeah, that first volume of Funky People ... yeesh. It was so weird growing up with hip-hop totally the soundtrack to your life ... then finally hearing the sample bits in original context and being like woah

Ultimate Breaks and Beats in the double packs, for rocking doubles!

And don't forget the Paradise Garage and Loft bootleg series...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 03:05 (twenty years ago)

was that Loft stuff on Nuphonic boots, tho? I always thought it was supposed to be legit. (is that why they went out of business?)

this thread inspired yeah by Ian's thread, but also by the release of Bay Area Funk Volume 2. and Absolute Funk Volume 2 just a few weeks ago! this stuff is insane to keep up with.

I also forgot Keb Darge's Legendary Deep Funk and Funk Spectrum! sheesh.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 03:13 (twenty years ago)

no, way before nuphonic....way underground boots sold at the finer dance stores, Rock-N-Soul, Dance Tracks, Vinyl Mania...the little rascals picnic picture stickered onto the front, or the Garage sign emblem, only song-titles, no credits. Many volumes.

i like this site

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Performance/3412/imc2005.htm

i also like the series on there called "mighty mellow". but where's "blue break beats"? i'm sort of young so i grew up on those instead of UB&B.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 03:52 (twenty years ago)

oops, i should have linked to this: http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Performance/3412/Crates/ultimate.htm (stupid framesets!!)

Ultimate Breaks & Beats = best compilations ever.

Shouts to the Super Disco Breaks comps too as they were the original breakbeat compilations.

There was another great bootleg set of compilations from the late 90s called Heavyweight Breaks, Beats & Grooves which ran for, like, 8 volumes were excellent and way better than more hyped series like Dusty Fingers or Strictly Breaks as they concentrated on songs which have been sampled that are actually dope songs rather than some unlistenable Latvian accordian song with a killer 5 second drum-break which Showbiz has sampled.
