So now that it's getting close : what song will be this summer's anthem ?

Usually, by this time of the year, it should be released. I have in mind something rn'b/hip hop but it can also be anything else...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 08:48 (twenty years ago)

for now I have no suggestions... (i'm so not in touch with the kidz anymore...).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 08:49 (twenty years ago)

which single has nelly furtado decided on? either 'maneater' or 'promiscuous girl' are summer jams in waiting.

ll cool j's 'control myself' as well.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 08:57 (twenty years ago)

it's gonna be that darn Gnarles Barkley song, which is fine except i've been listening to it since november and their manager is ... um ... not the best guy.

Joshua Glazer (matthewcampari), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 10:17 (twenty years ago)

ah, the manager -- essential component of any summer hit.

25 yr old slacker cokehead (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 10:20 (twenty years ago)

i think Milburn will break big, with their single "working a job for money" maybe as big as the arctic monkeys not sure theres a hell of a buzz on them. also less then jakes new single may give them a big hit it's very modern sort of like a ska punk take on the zutons or something.

Dec, Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

disgusting.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:23 (twenty years ago)

also the new arctic monkeys ep is gonna blow up everywhere the best track "stupid dole man" is gonna be inesecapable and i for one welcome it! it really shows the influence of hardcore hip hop on them, it's gonna be this years "golddigger".

Dec, Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:28 (twenty years ago)

It isn't right to say that its going to be this years "gold digger" because nobody had really known of Kane West before he went off on George Bush on television, so its going to come down to another band who are prepared to make big political statements to make this years summer anthem. The Kaiser Chiefs are a very political band, they've spoken a lot about the working class and how they're dragging england down (why is it OK to mock the posh but not the poor? I don't understand), and if they cang et some new material out within the next few months I could easily declare this the "Summer of Peanut"! It's easy to see why underground indie acts like MIA are so keen on the Kaisers, its just a shame they have to piggyback their talent.

I also think that a rerelease of "Giddy Stratospheres" by the Long Knives could be an easy #1 single, especially if backed with an exciting new Radio 1 advert.

I think the single will be "promiscuous girl" which i like a lot (less instant hit than "maneater", though) but I don't really see it becoming this summer's anthem.
"control myself" : isn't it a bit too old ? it's great but even for me it's a bit old news, now.
and concerning the kaiser chiefs, arctic whatever, it confirms I really don't care for "indie rock" anymore !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:39 (twenty years ago)

errrr, dude...

25 yr old slacker cokehead (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:40 (twenty years ago)

but yeah otm, when oh when will MIA stop biting the kaiser chiefs?

25 yr old slacker cokehead (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

i think it's dom. actually i thought it was you at first enrique!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:42 (twenty years ago)

i don't know when 'control myself' came out in the us - it's not out in the uk yet! i don't think so, anyway.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:43 (twenty years ago)

ska punk take on the zutons

YSI?

25 yr old slacker cokehead (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:45 (twenty years ago)

i think you are right spaceman joe this summer is very political in tone so a song that mixes melody and social commentary is gonna blow up. also thou ska punk i think really is ready to make a come back fall out boy are paving the way not for emo but for the fun punk and horn sections sound.

Dec, Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:45 (twenty years ago)

maybe something from the latest prince ! ("lolita" could make a great hit)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:46 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, i've not heard the prince album but 'black sweat' was such a missed opportunity in that the production is INCREDIBLE - but a) there is no tune, and b) prince cannot carry off something which has no tune any more, and in fact sounds old and vaguely wheezy. if he'd given it to britney then it would have been astounding for both of them!

oh yeah, nelly's 'grillz', that's not out in the uk yet and it's superb...

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 11:50 (twenty years ago)

grillz has been out for about a month! it's @ 38 now

soundbwoy is the uk's summer jam.

rtcotm (mwah), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 12:07 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I agree on "black sweat". although I like it a lot now, after several listenings, it truly lacks a hook (but I don't agree on Britney : she may be even older than him now !).
"grillz" : I've seen the video a couple of times but didn't notice the track itself. may have to check it out.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 12:37 (twenty years ago)

"New York Shit" by Busta Rhymes

probably not though, but that would be cool.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 12:39 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah! there's a busta rhymes song with kelis which is great. and kelis's own 'bossy'. and letoya luckett's 'all eyes on me'.

again no idea when these will/have come out.

christian milian's 'say i' is stupendously good as well but not really in a '1 thing'-ubiquity type of way.

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 12:45 (twenty years ago)

don't the neptunes have anything in stock ? when is pharrell's album gonna be released ?? ("chinese democracy" syndrom ?).

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 12:49 (twenty years ago)

SOS SOS SOS SOS

It might peak too soon to ride the summer out.

happydude, Wednesday, 19 April 2006 12:54 (twenty years ago)

"chinese democracy" syndrom ?

IF ONLY, AMIRITE?

snarky internet hitman (Enrique), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 12:55 (twenty years ago)

bombs will be falling somewhere to the soundtrack of "free radicals"
God I hope I'm wrong, as usual.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 13:51 (twenty years ago)

SOS is like a February anthem.

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 15:38 (twenty years ago)

billstevejim (billstevejim), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 15:42 (twenty years ago)

The other one that my son seems to be singing along with lately is something about "crashed my care into a bridge/I don't care/I love it".
