I'm wondering why rappers are suddenly so eager to use their real names, viz:

The Marshall Mathers LP
The Dana Owens Album
Todd Smith

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:28 (twenty years ago)

Who Is Mike Jones?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:31 (twenty years ago)

MIKE JONES

It's just a sign of hip-hop's increased maturity (age-wise) and acceptance in mainstream.

Although, a lot of rappers have very funny real names so the madcap handles will no doubt endure. 'Light Yo Ass On Fire' by Trevor Smith just wouldn't have the same impact.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:32 (twenty years ago)

Serge Gainsbourg (albeit changed from Ginsburg)

Jez (Jez), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, you sorta can't blame Tracy Morrow for calling himself Ice-T. Though it would be kinda cool if James Todd Smith had officially changed his first to name to Ladies Love.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 20 April 2006 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Erick Sermon?

His first solo record came out under his own name in 1993 - that beats Will Smith & Mike Jones by a handy margin. Was there someone earlier?

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:22 (twenty years ago)

Kurtis Blow?

His real name was Kurtis Walker.

This came out in 1984:

http://www.discogs.com/release/126392

I'm not absolutely sure if his real name is Frederick Linton though, but it sounds genuine.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:41 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, the thread clearly states HIS real full name.

-+-+++-+, Thursday, 20 April 2006 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but "Missy" is a short version of "Melissa" - I'm sure Mike Jones's real name is Michael.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Thursday, 20 April 2006 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Craig Mack !

"Rhymin' and rappin''" by Tanya Winley + Paulette Winley predates "vicious rap". I think "vicious rap" came out in 1980.

According to that Freddy Fresh book Paul Winley claims "rhymin' and rappin'" predates even "king tim 3" + "rappers delight" and that he released it in late '78/early '79 but it made no noise and then sank without trace. There's a lot of holes in his argument that it was the first rap record but it could be true and even if it's not it's still a great myth.
