A few band names for your consideration...

Good Evening,
I'm the singer in a band. I wanted to call the band The Pegasus League, a name that no one else in the band liked. Call me a wanker if you must - and I'm sure some of you will - but I thought it agreeably mysterious (redolent, in my imagination, of some sort of Venizelist secret society among the Phanariot or Smyrna Greeks in about 1920, and...hey you, at the back of the class, WAKE UP!).
Anyway, we played a few dead-end gigs under a couple of different names (no one knew who we were, so it didn't really matter), Shakedown and Freedom Run among them, but none of these really stuck either.
So my question to you is, would you mind ranking the following names in order of personal preference:

Nightwatch
Sunmaker
Skymaker
Gospel Plow
Battleflag
Love Gangster and the Gun Moll
Coldhand and the Widowmaker

To help you in your deliberations (which I know will be long and tortured)I should add that we're a Free/Lizzy/Purple/Accadacca/Trower/Monster Magnet-style act. Not that we're at all hackneyed or anything. And we're most of us in our early 30's.
I realise that I'm probably setting myself up for mass ridicule here, but fuck it. You're all music critics, and, as everyone knows, it's YOUR opinions that really count...
And to any of you that think you can get away with 'stealing' any of these names, I'll see you in court. Bitch.

James Thunder (The Pegasus League), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Nightwatch is the only name I like out of those.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:48 (twenty years ago)

BEARDBONE

Unnecessary sentence there.

How about Vagbond?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:49 (twenty years ago)

Love Gun and the Gangster Moll?

dr lulu (dr lulu), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:55 (twenty years ago)

Nah, Vagbond. Suggesting "The money you have to post as bail to get your prossies out of jail"...

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 April 2006 13:59 (twenty years ago)

Nightwatch could be the name of a bad lite jazz combo at the local hotel lounge, so no...

With a name like James Thunder (stage or no), I wouldn't think you should have an issue here...

James Thunder and the Lightning

Otherwise, I'd stick with Shakedown. If I really must choose from your list though, I'd say:

Maybe:
Sunmaker
Battleflag

No way in hell:
Nightwatch
Gospel Plow
Skymaker
Love Gangster and the Gun Moll
Coldhand and the Widowmaker

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Thursday, 20 April 2006 14:06 (twenty years ago)

1: The Pegasus League
2: Sunmaker
3: Gospel Plow
Several Way Tie For Last: The rest.

Mingus Realty (noodle vague), Thursday, 20 April 2006 14:16 (twenty years ago)

"Nightwatch
Sunmaker
Skymaker
Gospel Plow
Battleflag
Love Gangster and the Gun Moll
Coldhand and the Widowmaker"

Gay. Gay. Gay. Supergay. Civil war gay. Tom Tom Club gay. Retarded.

Best option: Name yourself after a comic book or song title from a stoner rock band.

Here are names from comics that may or may not have been taken:
Galactus
The Black Hand
Aquaman
Crimson Avenger
Speedy
Shumagorath
Hoary Hosts of Hogarth
Baron Mordo
Sorcerer Supreme
Dormommu
Urdo
Umar
Satannish
Agamoto
Wong

Arcturus Rann
Biotron
Baron Karza
Acroyear
Kalikak

KUBRICK'S RUBE

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 20 April 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Nightwatch is taken.
As is The Night Watch and Night Watchers.

Le Foutreheads

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 20 April 2006 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Ever thought of the band names
Oink Invite
or
YSI?

Plenty of free adevrtising round ILX if so.

Gospel Plow is a Screaming Trees song so props for that.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 20 April 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

Some of you are so terribly droll...
Yes, it is a Screaming Trees (and maybe a Bob Dylan?) song, though not one of the better ones. And I concede it's pretty bad name for a band.
'Civil War Gay' is just the right combination of butch and....er....gay! An excellent choice all round. Thank you all. Case closed.
I'm joking, of course.
Kindly proceed...

James Thunder (The Pegasus League), Thursday, 20 April 2006 16:54 (twenty years ago)

The Wolf League
Wolf Watch
Wolfmaker
Wolf Plow
Wolf Battle
Wolf Gangster
the Wolf Moll
Coldhand Wolf

The Black League
Blackwatch
Black Sunmaker
Black Skymaker
Black Gospel Plow
Black Flag (oops, already taken)
Black Love Gangster
Coldhand Black

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Thursday, 20 April 2006 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Gospel Plow is a Screaming Trees song, so they're halfweay there on the stoner-rock-band-song-title thing.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 20 April 2006 17:37 (twenty years ago)

Kubrick's Rube is kinda awesome.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 20 April 2006 17:38 (twenty years ago)

YES!

poortheatre (poortheatre), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I vote for Beardbone.

How about Black Naugahyde Undertow? Then you could be BNU, AMT + 1.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

I just thought of a very ridiculously random band name earlier: INCLUDING.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Thundercock and the Stiffs

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

or FEAT.

make sure to emphasis that it's with the dot

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Shakedown is also already taken.

Dionysos, Thursday, 20 April 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

mouthbreather is a great band name, there was a local band around here that was called that.

if i had a gun to my head, i'd choose 'sunmaker'

6335, Thursday, 20 April 2006 19:23 (twenty years ago)

Sunmaker or Gospel Plow.

Battleflag makes me think of Nazi hardcore, so skip that one.
The rest are also NG.

Actually, I (in all honesty) REALLY like Civil War Gay the most.

35 Hertz (35 Hertz), Thursday, 20 April 2006 19:32 (twenty years ago)

The more people write Civil War Gay the more I like it, too.

Edward III (edward iii), Thursday, 20 April 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

thirded on Kubrick's Rube!

dan jonze (danjonze), Thursday, 20 April 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

Kubrick's Rube is ingenious, but when you show up at the club it would probably be a shitty college bar band that spent more time on their name than songwriting. Like The Tequila Mockingbirds or something (and yes, that one is taken; probably tenfold).

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Thursday, 20 April 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Civil War Gay, The Blue and the Gay

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 20 April 2006 20:08 (twenty years ago)

...starring Stacy Keach as Jonas Steele, Lloyd Bridges as Ben Geyser, Rip Torn as General Ulysses S. Grant, and introducing James Thunder as John Brown

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Thursday, 20 April 2006 20:11 (twenty years ago)

I'm telling you it's gotta be
JAMES THUNDER AND THE LIGHTNING

Or Civil War Gay or nothing at all.

Matt Carlson (mattsoncarlhew), Thursday, 20 April 2006 20:12 (twenty years ago)

"The Black League"

this is actually a metal band that i dig.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 20 April 2006 20:22 (twenty years ago)

if we are talking comic book characters, my fave has always been *Brother Power The Geek*. You could split the difference and call yourselves *Brother Power*. Brother Power is a great stoner rock name. don't know if it's taken though. Plus, Brother Power The Geek was always trying to stick it to the man! With hippy surrealism!

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 20 April 2006 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Camelot 3000

Brooker Buckingham (Brooker B), Thursday, 20 April 2006 20:49 (twenty years ago)

Spanish Fly Overdose.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Friday, 21 April 2006 17:23 (twenty years ago)

Nightwatch - sounds like you're refering to the russian sci fi movie
Sunmaker - sounds too much like a world music band
Skymaker - ""
Gospel Plow - x
Battleflag - anything with flag in it sounds terrible
Love Gangster and the Gun Moll - got no clue what this means
Coldhand and the Widowmaker - ""

Man these names are terrible---sounds like they were picked out of my local paper for battle of the bands or something.

Why not something like..

'glass birds in the sky'
or
'so long lenin!'

The thing with actual band names nowadays is the fact that there are SO many bands... trying to make your band a name with real words would be pretty hard and even harder to remember for most people.

If I were you i'd come up with something like a phrase---
maybe a line from a book? a quote?

i don't know.

Jonathan HP (Benediction), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 02:59 (twenty years ago)

I think The Pegasus League is fairly good, actually. Certainly beats the other ones on that list.
