This one could be close. According to the oddsmakers at Caesar's Palace, there's no clear favorite. Ready.....go!

Nightingale

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:05 (twenty years ago)

I was going to say "She Sells", but I just can't deny that "Both Ends Burning" is one of the best Roxy tracks ever.

pssst - badass revolutionary art! (plsmith), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Just Another High, but there are quite a few great tracks on this.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:14 (twenty years ago)

This ones easy for me.

Could it Happen To Me?

Take me as I am, an average man

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:25 (twenty years ago)

that really high harmony on the verse to "End of the Line" is like my favorite moment in all of Roxy Music history -- so that one

ghost dong (Sonny A.), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

"Whirlwind," will try to say something why later.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:29 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, End of the Line.

fdgdfgdfgg, Monday, 24 April 2006 18:38 (twenty years ago)

she sells!

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:40 (twenty years ago)

mucho, mucho competition, but I gotta go with the absolutely devastating "Just Another High."

veronica moser (veronica moser), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:43 (twenty years ago)

Both Ends Burning, followed closely by Just Another High

douglas eklund (skolle), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:46 (twenty years ago)

"she sells" if only for the magnificant piano line and the metric modulation.

jonathan - stl (jonathan - stl), Monday, 24 April 2006 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Both Ends Burning

zeus (zeus), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Surely it came as no surprise, love was too hot to handle
I really blew my cool and you, you just blew out the candle.

(So when do I get to say "Mother of Pearl" already?)

rogermexico (rogermexico), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:11 (twenty years ago)

(So when do I get to say "Mother of Pearl" already?)

If we did an OPO Stranded, it wouldn't even be close.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:28 (twenty years ago)

JUST ANOTHER HIGH!!!!

ddb (ddb), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:41 (twenty years ago)

THOSE DRUMS!!!!!!!!!!!

SO SICK!

ddb (ddb), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:42 (twenty years ago)

"she sells" if only for the magnificant piano line and the metric modulation.

Let us not forget to mention The Astonishing Paul Thompson and his finest ever drum performance.

"Just Another High" can't be the best song on the record — it's devastating for sure and one of their all-time best. But it's also the vulnerable, behind-the-ambervisions, money-shot moment, which would seem to disqualify it. Or maybe not.

Interestingly, however, no one seems to be shouting "Nightengale"...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:45 (twenty years ago)

And wait a minute: how is nobody saying "Sentimental Fool"!?!

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:46 (twenty years ago)

And wait a minute: how is nobody saying "Sentimental Fool"!?!

No Love Is The Drug either, though I'm not surprised---the singles never do well in these type of things.

The scores so far:

Just Another High: 4
Both Ends Burning: 3
End of the Line: 3
She Sells: 2
Could It Happen To Me?: 1
Nightingale: 1
Whirlwind: 1

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, kornrulez6969, that wasn't meant to be an endorsement of "Nightengale" — it was of "She Sells", however...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:52 (twenty years ago)

I voted for Nightingale. But let me correct the scores--

Just Another High: 4
Both Ends Burning: 3
End of the Line: 3
She Sells: 3
Could It Happen To Me?: 1
Nightingale: 1
Whirlwind: 1

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 24 April 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Both Ends Burning

John Fredland (jfredland), Monday, 24 April 2006 21:21 (twenty years ago)

You are all attempting so hard to be sickeningly hip....LOVE IS THE DRUG...c'mon, admit it....you know you want to...

baht, Monday, 24 April 2006 22:06 (twenty years ago)

ha!

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 24 April 2006 22:12 (twenty years ago)

Both Ends Burning has tied it up. Probably my least favorite on the record, but who really cares.

Just Another High: 4
Both Ends Burning: 4
End of the Line: 3
She Sells: 3
Could It Happen To Me?: 1
Nightingale: 1
Whirlwind: 1
Love Is The Drug: 1

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Monday, 24 April 2006 22:15 (twenty years ago)

I just realized that you can totally cha cha cha to "Love is the Drug."

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Monday, 24 April 2006 22:35 (twenty years ago)

love is the drug

Could It Happen to Me

Joe (Joe), Monday, 24 April 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

"She Sells"...that coda blows me away every time

Keith C (lync0), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 00:22 (twenty years ago)

Hmm... The weakest track is apparently 'Sentimental Fool', which is actually one of my favorites, at least as far as the sonics go - the long, ominous intro, the desperate sounding outro with the frippish guitar line. Still not sure how I'd vote, tho.

someone let this mitya out! (mitya), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Sentimental Fool is one of my favorites too. Great memory of them opening with this on the Siren tour. Ominous intro OTM: several minutes of dissonant noises followed by Bryan cooly sauntering out on stage.

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:05 (twenty years ago)

"Sentimental Fool" is obvs. everybody's second favorite

ghost dong (Sonny A.), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I'm still trying to understand the appeal of Both Ends Burning. That was always one of my least-favorite Roxy Music songs from the first 5. Too slick, not enough of an edge.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 19:26 (twenty years ago)

"Just Another High."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

"Sentimental Fool" is like all of side two of Abbey Road without the rawk solos and, well, shorter.

Grey, Ian (IanBrooklyn), Wednesday, 26 April 2006 05:11 (twenty years ago)

seventeen years pass...

Should I stay here, should I go?
I couldn’t bear to be alone
Was it really love I saw?
Now I’ll never know

What is this I hear
I recognise that song
Sweet little nightingale
I knew you’d come along
