Erlend Oye's new side project The Whitest Boy Alive

I caught Erlend Oye's new side project in Stockholm last week. Pretty decent stuff, although not mindblowing. I feel as if he has kind of come full circle from Kings of Convenience to his DJing days... this band is like KoC plugged into amps and sometimes danceable. Erlend looked like he was having alot of fun though, and his voice is impeccable. Either way, the remix potential is unreal, and I'm more looking forward to those than the actual record.

talk amongst yourselves!

He lives in Berlin now does'nt he?

Arnar Eggert Thoroddsen (arnart1802), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 08:26 (nineteen years ago)

I just keep hearing that he's HUGE in Italy.

marianna (mariannapm), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

He still owes me a pint. In fact, I think he owes all of us a pint.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

The Whitest Boy Alive is a side project? I thought that's what he was going for all along...

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

uh i think he lived in berlin for a couple years ya, to form this band. and ya, i guess it's not a side project, just another band. the other three guys were all german, and it was especially funny when Erlend introduced the keyboardist, he said something like, "this is _____, as you can see, he is from Germany" which was funny cause the guy was stereotype german material. moustache, beater, fugly haircut. okay damn that story sucked, guess you had to be there...

in addition, band name is on par with i love you but i've chosen darkness for awfulness.

Daniel Gelfer (gelfball), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

"I love you but I've chosen the whitest boy alive" would be a better name.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Tuesday, 25 April 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

There's a Whitest Boy Alive on the Kitsune Midnight track from a couple years ago. It's not mind-blowing awesome, but it's fun.

spam or not spam, i was in Bergen yesterday, and alas I did not run into Erlend, or annie, and it pained me deeply.

this album dreams is alright - simple guitary minimalism but quite nice and effecting.

I liked the track on the Kitsune comp more....

glenny g2003 (glenny g2003), Wednesday, 26 July 2006 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

I really love the single, "Burning," so the rest of the album was kind of a let-down. But it's still pretty nice.

i'm really loving the album, although it runs out of steam bigstyle three quarters of the way through.

CharlieNo4, Saturday, 20 October 2007 12:29 (eighteen years ago)

what a ridiculous band name! is he trying to describe, like, every member of his fanbase?

stephen, Saturday, 20 October 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

i believe he is aware of the joke dude. you get no zing points for that one.

s1ocki, Saturday, 20 October 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

no, i think he's playing the joke on himself. as opposed to his fanbase. two distinct interpretations.

stephen, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

I would love another Erlend Øye solo album, in the same style as the first one. The world still needs more electro-retro.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 20 October 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)

it's a dud name no matter how many levels of irony

Hurting 2, Saturday, 20 October 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

If I wrote him as a character in a movie, I'd have someone shoot him and then say "Not anymore."

I think this is the first time I unreservedly agree with geir.

right, anyone going to see him/them tonight?

CharlieNo4, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Is he touring?

Yeah, not much into schmindie, but this is very pleasant.

Bodrick III, Friday, 8 February 2008 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

I hope he will do a followup to his solo album soon. It's the only thing he has been involved in that I really love.

Thoughts on the new one, 'Rules'?

Seems pleasant enough but I doubt it will win anyone over who didn't already like the first.

Millsner, Monday, 16 February 2009 10:55 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah I liked it. I hadn't heard Dreams or KoC before and was only familiar with Erlend as a DJ and Royksopp collaborator, but this is great. It's got a laid back sorta nineties Nightmares On Was/chill out vibe, but in a good way. Love the first two tracks.

the next grozart, Monday, 16 February 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

Corr: Nightmares On Wax.

the next grozart, Monday, 16 February 2009 13:14 (sixteen years ago)

Although a collaboration between Was Not Was and Nightmares On Wax would be a kind of nice idea.

lex pretend, Monday, 16 February 2009 13:24 (sixteen years ago)

their band name is SHITE and yes there's a certain amount of blandness, but it's great sunday morning hangover music, and even lex might possibly like it. the new album was recorded entirely straight with very few instruments and no overdubs so that's also kinda impressive, given the eventual sound.

the next grozart, Monday, 16 February 2009 13:28 (sixteen years ago)

there are very very few names which are dealbreakers by themselves, but this is one.

concerned me to.

like the new wba album a lot and very much looking forward to "broken rules" - every track on the album remixed by fred falke!!!

golden cage (remix) was awesome.

djh, Monday, 16 February 2009 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

I don't hear Nightmares On Wax. I do hear elements of Daft Punk. Am loving "Courage".

djh, Wednesday, 18 February 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)

I was a bit disappointed with the first album, but I caught most of their gig at By:Larm today (squeezed in-between Robert Post and Lindstrøm appearances) and I most say I liked the new stuff. Should check out the new album, I guess.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 22 February 2009 01:43 (sixteen years ago)

Liking 'Rules' a lot.

djh, Sunday, 22 February 2009 15:03 (sixteen years ago)

I saw them cover Stardust's Music Sounds Better With You recently. It was pretty magical.

Popture, Monday, 23 February 2009 04:23 (sixteen years ago)

makes sense. seems good on youtube.

djh, Monday, 23 February 2009 22:45 (sixteen years ago)

"1517" = homage to "Harder Better Faster Stronger" (or at least "Cola Bottle Baby"), amirite?

Really enjoying the new album, but the prospect of "Broken Rules" is very exciting. Is it definitely going to happen? Can't find anything about it online.

weird i just wear the same colours, bright blue t-shirt and pink bermuda. the song misses some guitar and there is too much spanish in there but it isn't too bad. not mind-blowing though.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 31 July 2013 20:28 (twelve years ago)

That's not spanish.

Really need to know Geir's opinion of Legao.

jaymc, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 04:35 (eleven years ago)

What was the song linked above. I thought it was Garota but there's no spanish nor portugese on that one.

Moka, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 05:21 (eleven years ago)

Oh ok it was 'la prima estate' which is Italian.

Moka, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 22:01 (eleven years ago)

That video is nightmarish.

Moka, Wednesday, 12 November 2014 22:13 (eleven years ago)

I kind of like Legao. I've listened to it a lot. I never liked Kings of Convenience. Just a pleasant album, really.

I feel a bit bemused that I'd managed to miss that there was an Erlend Oye album this year.
