lol

I bumped Darren Hayes in the Cat & Fiddle on Sunset Blvd a few weeks ago. He seemed perplexed at the image of someone downing ale at eleven in the morning.

did you all hear about the $200,000 haircut? (after finding himself emancipated from the savage garden, darren reverted to his pre-savage sumptuous flowing (naturally) golden locks. when the rekkid company execs saw the goldilox video they chucked a spazz, made him chop the fabio mane off, scrapped the $200,000 video and remade it with the black spikes.)

three years pass...
I wish i could retitle this thread to attract the poptimists' attention. I have wanted a thoughtful answer to this question for some time: Why did Darren Hayes flop so spectactularly? Savage Garden was HUGE, as far as I can tell. They had a string of pop hits, Darren was a young pretty boy, the face of the band, but made almost no impact, completely counter to my expectations.

On the surface it would seem that 'the other guy' (Daniel Jones) really had amazing pop songwriting/production talent and without him, Darren was nothing. However, it's rare that to see this model in reality (e.g. as if silent partner Andrew Ridgeley was the 'real talent' in Wham! etc). And also, record company support is always important in success to SGs degree, and Hayes should have had it.

Any thoughts or inside info? Did Hayes not get the commensurate support from his label? Were his solo albums (he did squeeze out two, didn't he?) really THAT bad?

no love. no love at all.

Never heard the solo alb(s?), thought the second SG album way way worse than the first. Don't really have any info, though, since a lot of great follow-up albs (second Company B, second L'Trimm, second Stacey Q) flop, so I wouldn't automatically assume that no sales = no good.

Darren's second solo album did a bit better in Australia than the first did. I think the mistake he made was to dye his hair blonde for the first one.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 18 February 2006 07:52 (twenty years ago)

The second is probably the finest Australian pop album of the last 10 years or so. The first one is probably better than the second Savage Garden one, but I never liked them anyway.

(Tim Finney-placating note of moderation. It may not actually be better than "Shape" but it's in the ballpark)

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 18 February 2006 07:57 (twenty years ago)

I got the first two singles from the second Hayes album free from Beat, and this has lessened the likelihood of me actually spending money on the album - however "Darkness" is ace.

Edward what did you think of Darren's version of "Lost Without You"? I didn't like it much at all, but it might just have been the whole seriousness vibe of that Aria awards that really put me off (see also Farnham's acceptance speech).

(yes it would be hard for most things to beat Shape)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 18 February 2006 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Ah, that cover did nothing for me because I don't think "Lost Without You" is a very good song.

fuckface bunnykins (edwardo), Saturday, 18 February 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

yeah that's a good point. "Not Me Not I" might have been better. but generally, no, Darren doing Delta does not compute.

(how WTF is "The Analyst" anyway)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 18 February 2006 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Well, our friends down under may not be in the best position to comment, but this still begs the question: Why no success north of the equator? I lived in Russia and noticed some promotion even there, so the label must have done something for him. Not enough?

SG/DH is the kind of music that I would never rush out and buy, but get three singles stuck in my head and eventually I come around.

one year passes...

Is this racist action old news??

W4LTER, Tuesday, 21 August 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

THE former frontman of Savage Garden, Darren Hayes, has been arrested for an alleged racist attack on a waiter at a Thai restaurant in London.

Hayes fronted police in London last Friday night, where he was arrested for racially abusing a member of staff at Busaba Eathai in Wardour Street on July 22. The attack did not involve physical violence, but is believed to have been directed at a male member of staff.

Hayes was released on bail.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "We can confirm that a 35-year-old man was arrested by Westminster police on suspicion of racially abusing a member of staff.

"He was arrested after voluntarily attending a Central London police station by appointment. He has been released on bail pending further enquiries, until the 21st of September."

The spokesman would not comment further.

A manager at the Soho restaurant, who did not want to be named, confirmed the incident and said that it involved a verbal attack by Hayes on a member of staff.

He said restaurant staff reported the incident to police, who took statements on July 23. He said the victim had returned to work, and the matter was now being left in the hands of police.

The incident follows Hayes's public criticism of the Prime Minister, John Howard, on a visit to Australia a week ago, for his stance on homosexuality.

Hayes hit out at the need for his partner, Richard Cullen, who he married in London last year, to fly to Australia on a tourist visa.

"It makes me angry and frustrated," Hayes told News Ltd newspapers. "I'm Australian and the way the law sits I can't bring my partner home as my partner.

"That to me is an infringement of my civil rights - a very un-Australian thing.

"I would never have voted for John Howard and I encourage people not to. I don't think he speaks for this country in the same way I don't think George Bush speaks for the US."

Has anyone heard Mr. Racist's ambitious new double album? I want to get it for his voice, but the last one only had a couple good songs.

dr. phil, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

Is there a bit of Pim Fortuyn about Darren Hayes??

W4LTER, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

He got arrested for what exactly? What did he say? Can you be arrested for insulting people now or something!? (not that I am at all excusing racist abuse)

Trayce, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

Quite good restaurant, tho they try to get you out quick. Maybe that's what caused him to snap.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 10:19 (eighteen years ago)

Australians working in London being racist shitbags? Whatever next?

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 22 August 2007 10:21 (eighteen years ago)

They'll be arresting Portugese art students in Camden for dressing badly next.
