Are they still around, big hit for me back in the day. "Temptation Summary".

Poops McGee, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no, but I think a couple of them are in The New Pornographers now.

fritz, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

they appear over for good, carl newman was interviewed in splendid and says new pornographers are his only gig now, sad, np pales next to zumpano. he could inspire a subject though as he was the only pop singer with a lisp i have ever seen, best pop disabilities then.

eight years pass...

is this band good? their two studio albums just arrived on emusic.

ha i was looking at those the other day and thought that surely album covers that bad couldn't be associated with good music.

They are good. Some might say better than New Pornographers, who some might think are one of the more overrated bands of our time...

New Pornographers . . . are one of the more overrated bands of our time...

still, intrigued by zumpano (despite the awful album covers).

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 27 March 2010 21:55 (sixteen years ago)

I prefer the first Zumpano album by a great margin over the second, but they're both worth hearing if you're into Carl Newman's song style.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 27 March 2010 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

just downloaded look what the rookie did.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 27 March 2010 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

love the sample of evil black magic

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 27 March 2010 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

"The Party Rages On" is one of his best tunes!

Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Saturday, 27 March 2010 22:46 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, "Evil Black Magic" is the pinnacle of their brief career. xp

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 27 March 2010 22:48 (sixteen years ago)

it sort of reminds me of the closing song on twin cinema (in vibe and instrumentation, if not melody).

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 27 March 2010 22:50 (sixteen years ago)

Zumpano were good, but they lack a lot of the creativity, energy and perfect songwriting The Pornos got on their best albums.
They sounded like The Shins, only before The Shins and they had some great tunes (along with some mediocre one's as well).

Zeno, Saturday, 27 March 2010 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

sad, np pales next to zumpano

lol old ilm

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 27 March 2010 23:01 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that's some serious challops. I do love their Jimmy Webb cover, though. Also seek out the Supercharger tune "There Goes Helen," which towers over everything else they did.

Simon H., Saturday, 27 March 2010 23:21 (sixteen years ago)

and by Supercharger, I meant Superconductor, obv.

Simon H., Saturday, 27 March 2010 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

I saw Superconductor open for GbV in Memphis in 1997, and I couldn't believe they crowded all those 12 or 13 people onto that tiny little stage. Wasn't impressed much by the choons, tho.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 27 March 2010 23:31 (sixteen years ago)

"Also seek out the Supercharger tune "There Goes Helen," which towers over everything else they did"

i'd say that one's goes to The Bastard Overture - like a Pornographers meets Melvins tune. weird combination? maybe, but the result is awesome.

Zeno, Saturday, 27 March 2010 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

is it really controversial to say Zumpano is better than New Pornographers. Granted I haven't heard the last album but 'goin' through changes' is an all timer for me and New Pornographers are surely more clever but I miss the big stupid choruses, the over the topness of Zumpano. But I suppose that is just me, also Dan Bejar-ugh!

keythhtyek, Sunday, 28 March 2010 15:30 (sixteen years ago)

New Pornographers > Zumpano > NP's songs with/by Dan Bejar

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 28 March 2010 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

nine years pass...

Sad news:

Just found out about the passing of Mike Ledwidge, my old bandmate in Zumpano. Wrote songs together, signed to Sub Pop together, toured in a van together. He was the talented one. Too many getting taken away. RIP Mike
