dark sexy house.......yes please

I've just downloaded that Goldtrix (presents Andrea Brown) track 'Trippin', thanks to some help on an earlier thread, and it sounds to me like something one of the early housemeisters (Marshall Jefferson, Lil Louis, Ralphi Rosario, that bloke who did 'House Nation' etc) should be doing in 2002 - dark pulsing beats, with almost acid house touches topped off by a yearning in-and-out vocal. So is there anything else like this around - or, failing that, simply sexy house along the lines of Busta Funk's 'Black Sugar' (don't know if anyone else will've heard of thie, but still....)??

was this song in the charts recently? i'm sure it's a cover of the fabulous jill scott's "it's love".

as i'm not entirely sure what the song sounds like i can't really recommend anything but having mentioned marshall jefferson i strongly advise you to check out the salt city orchestra remix of his track 'mushrooms' - dark & sexy house indeed >:-)

The Dark Sexy House... is this a film?

DV, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the felix da housecat album is great

Soulshaker by Max Linen is sexy and a little dark. Perhaps a little cheesey too, but worth a download.

Ronan, Friday, 15 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oooh I know - Pepe Bradock.

I like "Trippin", but mainly to the extent that it gets right what the house remix of Kosheen's "Hide U" got wrong (the original "Hide U" is one of only two great tracks by that group, but the remix just sounds enervated). Overall I don't know if you can build a whole sub-style around serious vocal house tunes with slightly delayed-sounding synth hits.

It may be a bit too lush, but my nomination for sexy house track of the mo' would be Dubtribe Sound System's "Do It Now", which is almost unbearably delicious and delicately throbbing. Plus the singer sounds like Terry Hall, which of course is a plus. Please people check this out.

Also on the lush disco tip, there's Silicone Soul's "Right On (12" Disco Edit)" which is Hed Kandi style opulent string-swept vocal- house done absolutely par excellence. The strings are really quite amazing. PLUS Lo-Fidelity Allstars' "Sleeping With Byron (Hotbox Remix)", which unites delirious galaxy-embracing psychedelic US garage (Byron Stingily's rapturous vocals) with a fabulous farting bassline.

Dajae's "Everyday My Life (Cevin Fisher's NYC Mix)" is perhaps closer to the mood of the actual question, being none-more- compulsive driving vocal house stripped down to the barest minimum. Little more than snatches of Dajae, quietly beserk electro riffs and grinding bass - yum.

Re Max Linen's "The Soulshaker": Ronan this is quite good, but I actually think it's the remixes that = coolness, largely because they all sound like blatant Green Velvet rip-offs a la all of Superchumbo's stuff. Search: Robbie Rivera's Tribal Sessions Mix, the Do You Like It Rough Mix and the Deep Dark Dirty Dub.

If we're talking more general house music then can I say for the last time SOMEONE PAY ATTENTION TO JUNIOR JACK-THRILL ME.

God if it was on Discovery everyone would love it.

Tim, is there a particular site you download dance stuff from? I mean, to say you get remixes and the like? Or do you just buy alot of singles?

Ronan, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim gets all this stuff beamed directly to his mind. Ever since the chip implant he's been living on cloud nine.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nothing quite so grand. I review singles for a local paper. Since it's seventy-word mill-churning stuff I don't bother reproducing it on Skykicking, but i do keep note of the good stuff.

Tim, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tim, your writing is always so c-a-l-m. I like what you say, but it's quite unnerving.

Bob Zemko, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That sounded more patronising than I intended. soz!

Bob Zemko, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Have you tried Moodymann's last 2 albums. Octagon Man (saul kane)? And I second Pepe Bradock, particularly the over-blown 'Deep Burnt' or tracks from the Versatile compilation, but Motorbass's Pansoul is still the darkest sexiest house on the block. Or more recently - try Black Strobe's Innerstrings - dark and stirring, (surely house is always somewhat sexy) it sounds like an orchestra coming up on drugs.

Yes interestingly my friend had bought the "Do You Like it Rough" mix of Max Linen on Saturday when he came over with his decks. Fantastic.

He also bought a white label remix of "Break Ya Neck" which is really really great. Nothing amazingly enterprising, ie it's a straight enough house remix, but it works very well as a dance song.

The following are now stuck in my head, since I just got back from seeing Jon Carter.

Inner City-A Good Place (Basement Jaxx remix)

X-Press 2-Lazy (as always)

Jon Carter-Everlasting Life

Happy Mondays-some major hit of theirs which Carter played a remix of.

Leftfield-Open Up (Played by the Redsettaz who were supporting)

Underworld-Cowgirl (played by my friend Phil djing).

er not sure where I'm going with all this but there you go.

Ronan, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh and what's that track with the deep voiced black guy going "I want you to walk up to the person you've been dancin with all night, or the person you've been wanting, or feeling, or lustin' after and whisper in their ear, real soft........I WANT TO FUCK YOU LIKE AN ANIMAL" ho ho.......it's a good song though beyond the novelty value of that part. It's definitely dark sexy house aswell. There's nothing like a club full of people howling "I WANT TO FUCK YOU LIKE AN ANIMAL" for entertainment.

Ronan, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

sounds like "Welcome To The Jungle"

patrick, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Cheers Patrick, do you know who it's by?

Ronan, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay Ronan I'm listening to "Lazy" and "Thrill Me" and they're both very good. Point taken re "Thrill Me" would probably fit well on Discovery.

(BTW Bob I'm not ignoring what you said, I just don't know erm what to say really)

Tim, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hooray appreciation at last. I'll shut up about them now. I'm all about that Basement Jaxx Inner City remix, "let me take you to a place I know you want to go, it's a g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g-g good place". Real old skool stuff. gah sorry I'm really overbearing on dance music these days.

Ronan, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, it depends on what you think is dark and sexy. The mention of Moodymann (aka Kenny Dixon Jr.) certainly fits the bill in my book, as would Theo Parrish. You may also want to look into Ron Trent, Chez Damier, Rick Wade and lots of the Trackmode stuff (although it's more sexy than dark). Chris Gray also does some pretty sexy stuff. The new Norma Jean Bell on Peacefrog. Some of the old Stickman stuff. -jeff

Well, time for a bit of grovelling - some fucking fine answers there and no mistake, in the best ILM traditions. Haven't uncovered all of those prospective gems yet, but early praise has to be due to Tim for his Dubtribe SOund System suggestion. Unimpeachably lush stuff. And props to the "Is 'the Dark Sexy House' a film?" answer. I hadn't laughed that hard since the day before. And now, with all these sexy answers just lining the screen, I think I'll be off for a wank.

baboon, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The new Norma Jean Bell on Peacefrog.

My 102 Beats That entry hurrah!

Andy K, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Welcome To The Jungle is by Thick Dick. haha check it out.

patrick, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I agree with the Dubtribe Sound System entry, quite nice. Also, I'm listening to this Francois K mix comp....there's a few amazing slices of lush, soulful deep house - I can't get enough of this track Papillon - Strong Blend (Fully Roasted Remix)

patrick, Tuesday, 19 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just downloaded Rocket Base by Jark Prongo, it's got a riff from some presumably famous Salt N Pepa song sampled in it. Fantastic stuff.
