Artists that you had previously heard were assholes but based on your limited and brief interaction with them you can authoritatively declare them to be nice people

This is getting ridiculous.

Answer: Stephen Malkmus. We chatted a few times and he was nice. Therefore he is nice.

Justin from The Locust

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 30 April 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

I've heard Derrick May is a total cock, but he was polite and funny when I interviewed him, though he may have been high.

js (honestengine), Sunday, 30 April 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Steve Albini!

Arnar Eggert Thoroddsen (arnart1802), Sunday, 30 April 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

Let me add Nick Cave as well although I'm not sure if I heard he was an asshole. I guess I just thought he was scary.

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Sunday, 30 April 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

Jason Spaceman/Pierce seemed like a decent chap and shared a bottle of red wine

Ryan Adams.

Jim Thirlwell.

i was pants-shittingly frightened to interview Becker and Fagen. i assumed they would sneer and be dismissive, given the rag i was working for at the time. In fact, both were lovely.

Steve Albini!

It's funny, I had long held the impression that Albini was an asshole, but on his new recording forum he is very polite, forthcoming, and decent-seeming:

Steve Albini thirded.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:26 (nineteen years ago)

"talking to fan" or "talking to reporter" /= "talking to the guy setting up mics for the sessions drummer"

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

Steve Albini frothed.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Monday, 1 May 2006 17:32 (nineteen years ago)

Jared Leto! his band is awful, he's a decent actor, but I met him before his band's concert (got free tickets), and he was super nice and we talked for a bit.

mb, Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:42 (nineteen years ago)

Lol. I would probably fifth Steve Albini, if it wasn't for the fact I have never met him. He just always really seemed to me to be the type of person who seems like a jerk but who would actually be a pretty nice guy if you were to actually meet him.
Let's see another thread pop up titled, " Artists you have never met that you heard were assholes, but you just might think otherwise".

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

I only heard that James Murphy was an asshole way after the fact of meeting him, but he was exceedingly friendly and conversational when I bumrushed him with whiskey-drenched gratitude for the show LCD had just played at the Echo (still very possibly my favorite show I've ever seen). I have a hard time believing anyone who can show as much patience to a hopeless drunk who keeps loudly explaining how many of the band's livesets I'd downloaded as he showed to me could possibly be an asshole; I have a much easier time believing he gets interviewed by a lot of people desperately in need of a sense of humor.

James.Cobo (jamescobo), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 02:35 (nineteen years ago)

I flirted once with Deb Googe after an MBV show...she didn't exactly sic the bouncers on me...

hank (hank s), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 13:50 (nineteen years ago)

er, I had never heard that she wasn't nice, BTW...that whole band just seemed a bit aloof...

hank (hank s), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 13:51 (nineteen years ago)

Joni Mitchell. Opinionated and passionate, but basically quite pleasant.

Dan Heilman (The Deacon), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

Thirwell seconded. Polite and soft-spoken the couple of times I've met him.

Edward III (edward iii), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, Albini: He engineered some tracks for my old band one day and was totally entertaining and professional and personable. He was even forthcoming when our geek keyboardist asked him about working with Plant & Page. Way beyond the call of duty. A real prince.

Major Bloodnok (Major Bloodnok), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

Two stand out for me. Wyclef Jean is real cool. And Mudhoney are great guys.

JB Young (JB Young), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

dunno that anyone thinks they're assholes, but fugazi got a lot of shit for über-righteousness and such; they are really very friendly, if small (the drummer is normal-sized)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 20:13 (nineteen years ago)

Lou Reed.

Just kidding! The amazing thing is that after all the bad things you hear about Lou Reed, he's actually worse in person, and 10x worse if you have to work with him. Total psycho.

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 20:26 (nineteen years ago)

james ellroy is annoying. larry king is a complete asshole.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 20:47 (nineteen years ago)

more stories about reed please

anthony easton (anthony), Thursday, 4 May 2006 06:01 (nineteen years ago)

The Locust seconded. Totally nice guys. Justin said he remembered a demo tape I sent him five years prior. He was probably lying, but it was nice of him to lie.

I heard Wooden Wand were a buncha crack-smoking assholes, but they were some of the sweetiest sweeties I've ever encountered, especially the girls in the band.

Khanate seemed scary but were anything but in person - super nice dudes. Plotkin seemed a little moody, but aside from that..

Sam Tennis, Thursday, 4 May 2006 06:45 (nineteen years ago)

I've met Bob Geldof, and he was an asshole. In a prima donna-ish, nasty-to-waitresses-ish, don't-you-know-I'm-a-star-ish kinda way. You'd think he'd have got over all that shit years ago.

jz, Thursday, 4 May 2006 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

I met a Guy Called Gerald in a club once and didn't realise who he was till he'd gone. Awesome awesome dude.

dog latin (dog latin), Thursday, 4 May 2006 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

not that I thought he'd be an asshole before. I'd never really entertained the idea.
