just in case there isn't a thread. but i find that VERY hard to believe.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 1 May 2006 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

i'm at work so youtube is out of reach for me... but the thread title begs a punchline... something about "white stripes, don't do it"?

rentboy (rentboy), Monday, 1 May 2006 12:21 (nineteen years ago)

NO, coca-cola!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 1 May 2006 12:22 (nineteen years ago)

This thread title sounds like a Young Jeezy lyric.

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Monday, 1 May 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, that's a fantastic commercial, I have to say, and very un-Coca-Cola like, especially since Coke marketing is usually all about being "real" and "authentic," and that right there is pretty darn unreal.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 1 May 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

Yikes, Jack goes a little sharp on "You'll get more if you give it," doesn't he?

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Monday, 1 May 2006 13:00 (nineteen years ago)

I love Jack White. A part of me is starting to hope for a new hungrier version of Jack. Is there one on the on the horizon? Jack has just spoiled me so.

I liked it. Shorter one is better though. Man I am in love with Coke Zero. That shit is like crack. It tastes JUST like real Coke!

Skot, did you see this on American TV? The YouTube links claim it's only out in Australia.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 1 May 2006 23:47 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's great as a song, video, and commercial. I exhort those who don't like it to eat a dick, and those who are with me to sing that shit.

O-Keigh (O-Keigh), Monday, 1 May 2006 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

That commercial is hella rad.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Tuesday, 2 May 2006 00:18 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's excellent because it's all about delicious, refreshing Coca Cola [tm], The Real Thing [c]. Nothing quenches thirst quite like Coca Cola [tm] and no one extolls its virtues with more oomph and pizazz than Jack "Whistling" White. Kudos!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

I've never seen this ad on TV down here!

Maybe I dont watch enough TV tho. Is the redheaded woman at the start the one who played Bernard's "summer girlfriend" in Black Books!? It looks a lot like her.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:33 (nineteen years ago)

The homeless man helping the woman with the broken umbrella is an oddly unsettling touch.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 01:41 (nineteen years ago)

I'm kinda surprised that Jack White doesn't appear in the ad. Or did I just miss him?

It looks cool, but the song is terrible. A new low for poor ol' Jack.

saelan, Tuesday, 2 May 2006 09:11 (nineteen years ago)

JW should've played the homeless guy, that would ease it up a bit. Otherwise, neato-keeno.

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

is this actually being aired on tv?

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 14:06 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with saelan. Cool video, poor song.

I am a huge fan of the White Stripes, but I cannot pretend to be thrilled with this commercial. It's not that I think Jack White is a sell-out either.

Even if the whole multiples concept has been done before/done better by Michel Gondry in his videos for "Let Forever Be" and "The Hardest Button to Button," it is still rather unique since you don't see commercials like this one everyday. (BTW, I'm *really* surprised they didn't get Gondry to direct this thing.) Neither version of this Coke ad was particularly dynamic, IMHO. And, even though almost every person was holding a Coke bottle, I almost lost sight of what the commercial was supposed to be for——until the end, anyway. Perhaps if they had used the White Stripes' color-scheme rather than that surrealistic Willy Wonka-esque color-palette, the fact that it's a Coke commercial would have been more effectively highlighted. But, whatever! It is still a cool, great looking, visually arresting ad and I enjoyed watching it/them.

However, that song grated on my fucking nerves. Argh! It's like a poor imitation of the Partridge Family or something. Jack sounds so shrill on the chorus. I guess I prefer the long version of the ad more——although it does drag somewhat——than the short one because it is pretty much all chorus. "It's the RIGHT thing to DO!" hahaha Yeesh! :(

Certainly not a patch on "I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke." LOL

Mama Roux (Mama Roux), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

Ah, but far better than G. Love's sorry contribution to the Coke discography. I have a couple of 1960s Coca-cola songs/commercials by the Box Tops and Otis Redding that are pretty good. Are there any other notables?

O-Keigh (O-Keigh), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 00:40 (nineteen years ago)

I personally couldn't care less about White's retro/indie purism in the White Stripes, but I do have to wonder how he squares that worldview with making a COke commercial? Maybe it appeals to him that Coke's colors are red and white, I dunno.

John Hunter, Wednesday, 3 May 2006 01:16 (nineteen years ago)

I did a little searching and it seems like nearly every recording artist of the late 1960s did a Coke jingle, so it could be that Jack's retro/indie purism inspired him to do it. A partial list of artists who did Coke jingles:
Tom Jones
Petula Clark
Jay and the Americans
Otis Redding
The Mindbenders
Jan and Dean
Gary Lewis and the Playboys
The Supremes
The Troggs
Lee Dorsey
Leslie Gore
Roy Orbison
The Drifters
Ray Charles
Aretha Franklin
Lulu
The Box Tops
BJ Thomas
Vanilla Fudge
The Moody Blues
Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart
The 5th Dimension
Gladys Knight and the Pips
Left Banke
Neil Diamond

So who did direct the ad if not Michel Gondry? It's a total pastiche of his visual vernacular.
