Forthcoming album due July 17th.

I know some people here are not very into them but their newer stuff just keeps getting better. Proof of it is the aceness of the next single "Pull Shapes" which is up on their Myspace page. Opinions?

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 04:51 (nineteen years ago)

i'm pretty keen on hearing this, i agree the songs are getting better, although i like all of their singles.

are many of the earlier tracks on it? (i.e. dance so well, school uniform etc)

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 04:55 (nineteen years ago)

Don't know about that, but I know a re-recorded version of "Dirty Mind" will be in there.

daavid (daavid), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 04:58 (nineteen years ago)

i'm disappointed at the dullness of the album title though

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 04:58 (nineteen years ago)

But it's so 60s girl-groupy though. Meet the Supremes, Presenting the Fabulous Ronettes, The Marvelettes Sing, etc.

musically (musically), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:30 (nineteen years ago)

the album title will be great if the song isn't on there!

kit brash (kit brash), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 05:36 (nineteen years ago)

"pull shapes" is great. i'm sure i'll like this. i'm just wondering if i'll love it.

"The Pipettes Are Smoking!"

"Pipettes By A Nose"

I'll show myself out.

Isn't 'pipette' a slang term for blowjob in French?

Dagmar von Eisenbach, Tuesday, 2 May 2006 09:57 (nineteen years ago)

"pipe" equals blowjob in french. But I've never heard anyone using "pipette" -literally that would mean "tiny blowjob"

snowballing (snowballing), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 10:10 (nineteen years ago)

"Would you like a blow job?"

"Go on then, but just a tiny one. I'm trying to give them up."

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 10:23 (nineteen years ago)

The Tiny Blowjobs would be a much better band name, though!

Dagmar von Eisenbach, Tuesday, 2 May 2006 10:30 (nineteen years ago)

Searching 'pipette' on Google does in fact throw up a few examples of it being used to mean blojob. Here, for example:

http://forum.doctissimo.fr/doctissimo/fidelite-infidelite/citer-145963-10524-1.htm

(fascinating only-in-France discussion on whether getting sucked off by a friend constitutes infidelity!)

Dagmar von Eisenbach, Tuesday, 2 May 2006 10:36 (nineteen years ago)

my theory is that all three of them used to be in Thunderbugs.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:00 (nineteen years ago)

there is, as some here will know, a band called Pipas precisely because of what it means in French.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:01 (nineteen years ago)

Steve, I think you are a bit muddled about that.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:02 (nineteen years ago)

ah well better luck next time eh?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

Fingers crossed.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus that single is weak. Why would you listen to this band instead of their way superior influences?

There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvish (noodle vague), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:33 (nineteen years ago)

I guess cos their influences aren't around now and people like to see live music. Also they're the acceptable white face blah blah

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

Thass cool. They needn't bother releasing rekkids then.

There's a Guy Works Down the Chip Shop Swears He's Elvish (noodle vague), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:44 (nineteen years ago)

The Pipettes should just name all their albums after Anal Cunt songs.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 11:57 (nineteen years ago)

"I guess cos their influences aren't around now and people like to see live music."

.....not that any of them play an instrument.

hank (hank s), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:18 (nineteen years ago)

i would like to see a band called the "pipelettes", which means a bunch of girls who talk on and on and fucking on

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

"Dirty Mind" doesn't sound like any particular 60's girl song to me. And the white face thing is silly and you guys know it.

darin (darin), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

they're the new dolly mixture

next 50s inspired band, pick any word out of hat, attach "ettes" suffix, regurgitate pukey 50s ballads, photo shoot.

Hahahah. Pwned.

I want to like The Pipettes. I think I'd love them if they were produced by Alan Braxe.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Thursday, 4 May 2006 08:24 (nineteen years ago)

yep, noone is OTM. Is there anything left to say about them. And I usually only post on threads that concern music I like, but this, come on. Seriously? This why I rarely buy or keep up with current music.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Thursday, 4 May 2006 08:35 (nineteen years ago)

oh do shut up

which 80's ish comedy girl trio that were always on-the-verge-of- making-it-big-but-never-did do they remind me of?

it's driving me maaaad.

pick any word out of hat, attach "ettes" suffix

How statistically lucky of this particular group to pick out a word that happens to take an "ettes" suffix already!

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

oh man, I caught them performing live on TV.

A vocal "harmony" group they are definitely not. Very, very poor.

fandango (fandango), Monday, 8 May 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

LOVE THEM - just love 'em for what they are - silly fun. Don't get caught up into "they are a very poor vocal harmony group" etc. - please, just relax and enjoy.

Pat Smear, Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:32 (nineteen years ago)

yeah.

pisces (piscesx), Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:40 (nineteen years ago)

they're nice people but like fandango i saw them on tv and my god, they're appalling. it's a pity because i like their aesthetic, and i like the idea of a girl group doing what they do, but their execution is just dire. they REALLY can't sing! and why we need that when there are girl groups who can sing around is a mystery to me.

having said that, i think that if the pipettes ever discovered protools or autotune, they could be pretty awesome. but they must ruin it with their indie insistence on rubbish vocals.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

Just finished listenind to this. It's about 3/4 great. They rely on the same kind of grand sweeping chord changes a little too often though.

Simon H. (Simon H.), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

I think I'd like the Pipettes much more if they were the new Luke Haines project and sang about child murders and terrorism. That said, "Pull Shapes" is pretty undeniable.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 12 May 2006 03:54 (nineteen years ago)

I'd like them more if they weren't so faceless -- if they had some kind of lead singer(s) to rely on, some kind of consistent vocal/lyrical perspective. I don't know these people; why should I care?

The only song of theirs I like -- and I haven't heard the album, just various singles/live recordings/etc. -- is "We Are the Pipettes". Which is a bit weird, given that I can't endorse the lyrics. I would rather they weren't the Pipettes.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Friday, 12 May 2006 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

to me they're just another indiepop band who has tunes i like. they could all look like MES for all i care

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Friday, 12 May 2006 04:22 (nineteen years ago)

How weird. I just discovered that one of them used to be in one of my favourite bands ever - The Fairy Traders.

Vernon Jackson (kate), Monday, 15 May 2006 09:04 (nineteen years ago)

to me they just sound like modern day british pop girl group with a bit of a 60s inflection. they pale in comparison to the likes of the brunettes... that that the brunettes are strictly a 60s copy act..

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 15 May 2006 09:10 (nineteen years ago)

hahaha you totally lose me there. the pipettes are completely superior to the staggeringly overrated brunettes

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Monday, 15 May 2006 09:13 (nineteen years ago)

...or maybe not. I've been looking at pictures of the Pipettes, and none of them look familiar. Then again, the Fairy Traders were shockingly young for such a great band, and maybe they've grown up or something. It would have been just too weird a link.

Vernon Jackson (kate), Monday, 15 May 2006 09:20 (nineteen years ago)

i heard the album at the weekend, it's much better than that atrocious live performance - apparently the vocals are not autotuned, maybe the just sing better in the studio. they're still not great though, quite flat and strained, and they don't really seem to know how to bring out the emotional nuances of their lyrics.

The Lex (The Lex), Monday, 15 May 2006 09:24 (nineteen years ago)

The album is shockingly overproduced -- I never liked the band much, but I sort of understood what they were getting at (or trying, at any rate). This, though -- this is laden with oppressive, out-of-place synthesizers, and might as well be the work of any old major-label Popular Music factory. That decision works, by my reckoning, exactly once -- "Your Kisses Are Wasted On Me", which is entertaining in a disjointed kind of way, all vocal parts and superfluous synth noises sticking out at odd angles over uncharacteristically loud drums. But most of the rest of it is pretty actively horrible. The lyrics, too -- there is some pretty unpalatable stuff going on here, especially in the late-album filler. I hope they're being ironically stupid, though on the other hand that still wouldn't help much.

Also: worst appropriation of the "Be My Baby" drum intro in recorded history? Could be!

Pessimist (Pessimist), Monday, 15 May 2006 09:53 (nineteen years ago)

And Vernon -- I know they underwent at least one lineup change -- so maybe the member in question was either the one who left (and you're looking at a recent picture), or vice versa? I don't know.

Pessimist (Pessimist), Monday, 15 May 2006 10:00 (nineteen years ago)

I agree, the production is very offputting - prime example of that overcompressing technique as pointed out by stylus - ruins some of their best singles, 'dirty mind' for example

not really feeling 'time of the season' appropriation either

TAO (daggerlee), Monday, 15 May 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

Vernon Jackson

kate, i have to ask, does your new name have anything to do with the vernon-jackson subway station in queens?

brooklyn of the stone age (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 15 May 2006 22:01 (nineteen years ago)

The lyrics, too -- there is some pretty unpalatable stuff going on here, especially in the late-album filler. I hope they're being ironically stupid, though on the other hand that still wouldn't help much.

examples?

swvl (vozick), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 00:38 (nineteen years ago)

the pipettes vs the brunettes seems a legitimate fight. i'd pick the brunettes cause i think johnathan bree has far more musical ambition. they're both commited to some sort of success beyond the creative process and the brunettes are surely just as contrived as the pipettes but he's the secret weapon, i'm convinced their new record will be epic and huge and pristine while the pipettes cd will be several lovely versions of a set of similar songs but maybe they'll expand on it in the future just as the brunettes have.

keyth (keyth), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 02:12 (nineteen years ago)

hopefully they can use some of those sub pop $$$ to make their vocals sound not shit

electric sound of jim (and why not) (electricsound), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 02:35 (nineteen years ago)

Ha ha, JBR, you are the only person that has caught that.

Yes, it's where I used to live. It's also what I used to call my drum machine on old demos, to make it look like a had a whole band. I was thinking about LIC a lot, because my former housemate and I were trying to figure out if the new TSM album cover was shot on 21st Street or what.

predictably (well, i predicted it anyway), i think this is a good record. coupla great tracks, coupla duds, but the overall slugging percentage is pretty high. good formula, well executed.

hers are pretty pristine, his are to insure the am-radio charm.
i am listening to the new jane weaver, kinda blah, alt-country. apparently there is another album out soon.
are pipettes songs a group effort or do they have a guiding force?

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 21 May 2006 04:43 (nineteen years ago)

They do some good pop songs, they're not the best band ever. They are all about fun. They are great live.

But it's all about wanting to fuck the brunnette.

boney (b0n3y), Sunday, 21 May 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

Or even the brunette.
