Holy shit this song gives me a splitting headache. I feel like my skull is being sliced in two by that blaring feedback over the top of the song. I wonder if they play it live.

are these guys worth seeing? they're playing in my town tonight.

mono tony, Wednesday, 3 May 2006 01:59 (nineteen years ago)

I'm dying to see them. I wish they'd come around to the east coast again, because I was busy the one night they came within driving distance for me.

They are worth seeing, though they're definitely in full-on classic rock mode at the moment--there's a lack of entire tracks of spaciness--all the ambient has been confined to the very beginning of tracks. If you liked IAO Chant... then you'll enjoy them live I bet.

Although my ears didn't stop ringing for 3 days after their show, it was awesome.

They're playing up in Portland pretty soon, but I doubt I'll have the money to go see them, with gas prices being what they are...

I saw them a few years ago at Chicago's Empty Bottle, and I thought the sound was too muddy. Too many instruments competing for too little audio bandwidth.

wholly fucking awesome show. they were more dynamic than i expected. lots of in-between sing/chanting, harrmonizing jibber-jabber, thoat-singing, etc. and responding to nonsensical audience catcalls, harmonizing calls etc. the jams were epic, and the totally free, avalanche-of-sound type stuff was more controlled and power5ful than i expected. one epically long, pretty in a silent lucitity-type of way, epic song had a lot of busy-but-fluid bass melodies played within the circular riff. very cool show. the in-between vocal episodes made me think of old, western-european sea-faring? music, celtic styles, bagpipe melodies et al. this was in salt lake city. funny group of guys. whispy wizards with ill skills

i'm glad i brought my ear plugs with me.

The pre-Terrastock show was flattening, they killed it like villains. Agree that some of the most impressive stuff was the four-part a capella stuff - emulation of drone/folk sounds using the human voice, but oddly light-hearted, heart-warming.

I've been downloading some of their shows from archive.org and the setlist was similar to the 2004 shows - Trigger In Trigger Out, Dark Star Blues, La Le Lo. Remaining dates:

04 May. (thu) Tucson AZ @ Plush
05 May. (fri) San Diego CA @ Casbah
06 May. (sat) Hollywood CA @ Knitting Factory LA
07 May. (sun) San Francisco CA @ Bottom Of The Hill
08 May. (mon) Portland OR @ Doug Fir Lounge
09 May.(tue) Seattle WA @ Neumos
12 May.(fri) Minneapolis MN @ Triple Rock Club
13 May.(sat) Chicago IL @ Empty Bottle
14 May.(sun) Detroit MI @ Magic Stick
15 May.(mon) Cleveland OH @ Grog Shop
19 May.(fri) Cambridge MA @ Middle East Upstairs

Globetrottin' Ned Raggett! How are you sir?

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

i saw em a week ago and they were fantastic.
might wanna show up a little late though. the openers were yawners.

Fetchboy (Felcher), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

Er, aside from exhausted...

Pleased and merry, pretty much. :-) But yes, TIRED. And I've just heard that the Friday show is out for me due to something else coming up.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

lots of in-between sing/chanting, harrmonizing jibber-jabber, thoat-singing, etc.

yeah, all that japanese folk stuff was cool, sounded something like zen chanting. i also like how they kind of recycled two or three riffs all the way through the show.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:35 (nineteen years ago)

(some of the chants sounded celtic too, like transliterated ballads)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:37 (nineteen years ago)

agree w/ mono tony, the slc show was sick. lots of super-hendrix meets tony williams lifetime jams + playful throat-singing interludes. the bass player was phenomenal, especially. something odd - the two high strings on his bass were out of tune the entire show..but it seemed to be an intentional choice and didn't detract from the show.

6335, Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:41 (nineteen years ago)

at one point, the bass player was doing this throat-singing technique where he was causing the mic to feedback slightly w/ his drone pitch..at least thats how i think he was getting the feedback. it was definitely controlled from his voice - very cool!

6335, Wednesday, 3 May 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

i just rem, embered the stop-start-y, fragmented, spare jam with the bowed guitar shrieks, and how afterwards/during it the bass player just imitated it vocally, reducing it, then going back into it. that was great. so dumb

mono tony, Wednesday, 3 May 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

I saw them last night in SLC and they were indeed awesome.

robert in SLC, Wednesday, 3 May 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, and 'Reverse In Universe' is a bit hard to take and spoils an otherwise excellent album...
