Aw, shit...

Don't know how many of you will care, but this is just devastating to me personally - the most disheartening death in a month that saw far too many of them. Whether alone or in tandem with Jeff Armour, Dave Mahoney's drumming - emphatic, precise, vaguely martial - was absolutely crucial to the greatness of those old MX-80 Sound records, as well as those more recent O-Type records. He'll be missed. RIP

[Out of deference to Dave, and to a song which he first recorded with Rich Stim (as Chinaboise) over 30 years ago, I'm temporarily mothballing my adopted user name, purloined as it was from the title of said song.]

Oh no. Speaking as just a casual MX-80 fan, that fucking sucks. Any idea what happened to him?

No details on that site still.

i worked with Dave for the past three/four years. his passing is completely shocking and we're all floored as a result. apparently he just collapsed - whether it was a heart attack (which is the most likely culprit) or some sort of clot/aneurysm hasn't been conclusively determined. his body is being cremated and a memorial service is being held sometime in June in Berkeley. he leaves behind two teenaged sons as well. i know Amoeba (our employer) is setting up some sort of donation for his kids (and ex-wife, who is handling things), so if you feel like you'd want to send a gift, that'd be the place to call.

Dave was a really great person who had seen/done a lot in life, who had his accomplishments and regrets like anyone else, but who always seemed to find the vibrancy in the world around him. he seemed to have a real keen interest in new music and was constantly asking me about titles in the electronic section, wanting to be turned on to something new. i know he was a big MIA fan! i know i'll miss his quirkiness and overall presence in my life.

Thanks for the update -- it is good to learn that he lived life to the full, there are much worse legacies or ways to enjoy our time here.
