Whoa! I've never heard of this show. James Brown and Fela Kuti played a show together?! Now I'm intrigued.

Got an exact date, Anthony? I'd like to investigate.

Anybody heard the recording of James Brown with Can as his backing band and Jimi Hendrix on Guitar and Miles Davis on horn and Giorgio Moroder on synths with Eno on noise, recorded in Berlin, 1973?

Seriously though--James Brown playing with Fela would be astonishing. But that interview seemed unequivocal--Brown didn't even go to hear Fela, much less gig with him.

Scenester. You forgot to mention Kool DJ Herc's performance.

I'm pretty sure you're thinking of the Sly Stone/Pharaoh Sanders group with John Wetton & Klaus Dinger that did a double LP on CTI (the one where Rudy Van Gelder recorded them from inside the parking garage of a Mies van der Rohe high-rise--I'm not sure who put out the UK release, but it was just the whole session played backwards, with a Willie Mitchell/Conny Plank co-production credit), but whatever.

Wow, I'll bet that's almost 3/4 as good as James Brown with his own backing band.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:59 (nineteen years ago)

you're being awfully generous there, A.B.

Hahahaha

That's some quality, stout curmudgeonry, there, friend. Which backing band is that imaginary group 3/4ths as good? And which element(s) in particular are you trying to impune?

Anyway, it was just a little levity.

I.M. (I.M.), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

Heh, I know.

But considering that while Can's drummer is pretty awesome, Clyde and Jabo could still smoke him (not to mention that he cops a lot of his style from them), and that the rest of the rhythm section of Can is no match at all... just Hendrix/Can/Miles could be a pretty interesting combo, I think -- Eno and Moroder would probably clutter things.
