Neptune Records RIP

no, not a label, but a record store, and the best one in the Detroit area for the last 9 years...(in fact, Neptune was basically an offshoot of Play It Again Records, which held court in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area for about ten years prior to that)...20 years of quality record-stocking, soon end...

*sigh*

people, it's one thing when Strawberry's or Sam Goody's bites it, but it really sucks when the independants go...you can't exactly blather on about the golden era of 4AD with an Amazon clerk...

I just found out today as well. This really sucks. Brett, Michael and Nathan were always on the ball with ILM-friendly music, turning me on to everything from Kompakt to Felt to 23 Skidoo, etc. Plus, it was always a great place to hang out and say hello. Now I really have to make it back to Detroit before the end of the month to say bye.

that blows. in case anyone want to see their diverse catalog or throw them a bone:

the best thing about them is they didn't accept just anything in trade, only good stuff so the used rack was always filled with treasure. for a store with such a limited number of records their quality ratio was really high, compare it with say record time which has nothing but crap but loads of it.

Thats sad. I didn't go as much since their last move. And since soulseek. I did this!

Period period period (Period period period), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:38 (nineteen years ago)

man, just heard about this today, too. will miss that place a lot. even though i moved away a while back, i still pop in when i'm in detroit/royal oak. (hey aaron! wonder if brett's still got those galicja 12s kickin' around)

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

that's a good point about the quality of their stock...you could routinely find things like Papa Sprain EP's and Mille Plateaux comps in their used bin...the 2 locations they had were also quite attractive in a minimal sorta way, with great lighting (it's pretty rare for a record store to have anything other than fluorescents)...waaahh!...it's MY fault...I moved away!

hank (hank s), Friday, 5 May 2006 12:31 (nineteen years ago)

Ahh Netptunme aka Play It Again, one reason I usedta think Royal Oak was so damn cool when I was in High SCHOOL..how silly that sounds now... Still looking for a copy of Even As We Speak's Feral Pop Frenzy, shoulda bought it when I had the chance.. same with Blur's Parklife on LP. Glory days ahhh they'll pass you buy glory days glory dayyuyyyyyyss....

ARGUS VARGUS, Friday, 5 May 2006 17:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, just heard about this yesterday from Brett's wife, who I work with. I wasn't frequenting it as much in the past couple years, but started going back more often when I moved back to Ferndale. One of the best used sections ever (I picked up Burning Star Core and NNCK stuff recently), and nice guys all around. It will be missed.

Jeff Sumner (Jeff Sumner), Friday, 5 May 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

i think i bought most of my sarah records at play it again. they'd always write condescending bits on the plastic sleeves while big upping silly stuff like shiva affect.

keyth (keyth), Saturday, 6 May 2006 02:51 (nineteen years ago)

There's nothing silly about Shiva Affect.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Saturday, 6 May 2006 03:08 (nineteen years ago)

hey dave... tell michael, kris and i are sorry to hear the news :(

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Saturday, 6 May 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

I will, Ken.

They will all move on and do great things.

Out of the groove

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 11:58 (nineteen years ago)

oh man...you know, (and I'm not being facetious here) I can remember the *smell* of all those places in that article that I used to frequent...it was the smell of anticipation, and I'm gonna miss it...

hank (hank s), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

thanks for all the kind, kind words everybody. and all the business. it's definitely a weird time for music fans. it'll be interesting to see what happens in the next 5 or 10 years to other independents. good luck to everyone, and keep BUYING music.

b.neptune, Thursday, 18 May 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Hey Brett, see you next weekend.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 18 May 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

Im sorta glad Im in London right now. Id be terribly depressed to say goodbye to Neptune, Brett, Michael, and Nathan. Were it not for them, Id have never discovered the Avant Garde, Post Punk, Minimal Techno, Glitch, and everything else I listen to these days. A true inspiration.

Adam Trunoske, Wednesday, 24 May 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)
