I QUIT!

I'm sick of being an Indie-Hipster Asshole. It's getting me nowhere and I hate saying "No, Those Guys Suck" everytime someone says they like a certain artist. The next time someone says "I like Ja Rule" or "I think the Black Eyed Peas are great" I'm going to say "That's Great!" instead of "No, Those Guys Suck" or "No, try listening to Split Enz's first album" because I realized how stupid it is to worry about what other people should know.

So...Goodbye Indie-Hipster Assholes. Hello Sellout-ism.

I'm going to have a better life.

The Internet is no place for a woman, tho.

I was hoping this would be a thread about Hepburn :(

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 4 May 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

I'm listening to that Lorraine Ellison and thinking that you might like it because you want to be dominated

noizem duke (noize duke), Thursday, 4 May 2006 23:52 (nineteen years ago)

is this the beginning of the next hipster movement? love towards all and acceptence of all likes and dislikes?
we tried that, and it just ended up being about selling t-shirts.

andrew b (klik99), Thursday, 4 May 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

I was hoping this would be a thread about Hepburn :(

I CALL FOR A DOM THREAD HIJACK.

I thought The Hepburns (UK band) was going to be discussed!

So Ho La (So Ho La), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

One of Hepburn looked like a younger Shirley Manson! Rrrrr!

The bassist went on to appear in the video for Geri Halliwell's much-underrated "Scream If You Wanna Go Faster". Um, not rrr.

I realized how stupid it is to worry about what other people should know

Should know? Is there a test coming up? Keep your opinions, and keep giving them. Just don't insist that they are correct.
Opinions are innocent fun. Hipster attitude just sucks all the air out of a room.

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Friday, 5 May 2006 01:12 (nineteen years ago)

Try listening to Split Enz's first album.

No really, it has Stranger Than Fiction on it.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 5 May 2006 06:29 (nineteen years ago)

Personally I'd love more "indie hipsters" to hang around here. Would make an interesting opposition to all those hip-hop and R&B fans.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 5 May 2006 07:58 (nineteen years ago)

(Btw. Neil Finn didn't participate on the first Split Enz album) :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Friday, 5 May 2006 07:59 (nineteen years ago)

oh my, radicality, it's ok to like pop music! new direction for ilm!

Here I Go, Higher! Higher! (kate), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

So you're going from hipster to hippie?

(do hipsters actually like early Split Enz? It sounds like Genesis! That's, like, prog, brah!)

Oblivious Øystein (Øystein), Friday, 5 May 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

only if she's 5'3".

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:28 (nineteen years ago)

This hipster likes Split Enz, even if he doesn't know exactly when Neil Finn joined or left! It's partially nostalgia for the singles getting played on MTV in the early 80s, but it sounds as New Wave as it does Prog.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

Man, I wish it was that easy to sell out.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

this could have been one of the greatest threads ever.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Friday, 5 May 2006 17:24 (nineteen years ago)

Indie hipsters sure do love them some Dodgy and Crowded House!

STAY ON TARGET... STAY ON TARGET...

great quote from a older guy at the bar tonight:

today's hipster is nothing more than a walking encyclopedia of consensus pomposity

snowballing (snowballing), Saturday, 6 May 2006 07:14 (nineteen years ago)

I remember what a relieve it was when I just stopped giving a fuck about what other people thought. This is a massive cliche but the situation is so real. You know the feeling...in a certain group you would never admit that you think that "Under a blood red sky" is the greatest live album ever, that "I can't tell you why" by the Eagles (from "The Long Run") is a great ballad or that the first Cock Robin album is a great one. Yoou know, who controls this? If the "Brain Police" declares that Winger is actually a cool band, are we to follow? If Bjork puts on polish death metal at a party, is that OK to like now: "I have liked polish death metal for ten years, it gives me immense pleasure but I have never dared to admit it --- until now. Bjork freed me!"

And the benefits of getting older (I am 32 now) is, that this reinforces inside of you thru time. Music is music .. and a goosebumb is a goosegump - that's all that's too it. I have always found these "Guilty Pleasures" columns somewhat stupid. Admitting to like: "Whatever" ... I for one think that "Invisible Touch" by Genesis (1986) is one of the most perfect pop albums made in the 80's. I think Genesis have a very solid track record, bar the last two albums ("We can't dance" and the one made with the Stiltskin singer, Ray Wilson ("Calling all stations")).

And?

Being a fan of American Music Club, Steely Dan, Napalm Death, Jethro Tull and Rush this can be puzzling. One guy actally said to me, truly surprised and horrified really "How can you like Jethro Tull AND Mark Kozelek?" The answer was obvious to me. These artists make great music. But this question triggered an "tease effect". I began rambling on how much I loved Enya, Clannad, Obituary and Buck 65, deliberately

ps. If you like, say, Genesis, just look the people straight in the eye, without flinching and say: "Abacab is a masterpiece". ANd when they laugh, just keep at them. You will see, this is fun and relieving.

pps: sarcastic comments will follow this "log", surely. I guote the great Homer: "Well, what are gonna do?". And also ... I forgot for a moment... I don't fucking care!

Arnar Eggert Thoroddsen (arnart1802), Saturday, 6 May 2006 08:45 (nineteen years ago)

Normally, I don't care what people listen to...but if you're a fan of Rush, then you're obviously a fucking idiot.

You don't understand. This thread coulda had class. This thread coulda been a contender. Coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what it is, let's face it. It was you, Charley.
