Why Attack Him? In Defense of Norman Cook

Between watching him gleefully play with puppets in "Five Get Over Excited":

http://www3.youtube.com/watch?v=5mE8VJQAsc8&search=Housemartins

And the general gloriousness of the Housemartins, his before-the-times Beats International thing, some classic house tunes as the Mighty Dub Katz, and well, I never really got the big beat thng ( i took 'proper house' too seriously). But really - if you're going to have a 20 year career, could you haver a lot more more fun? (there's that word again!). Just sayin'...he kind of did pretty well, in a whole manner of ways.

if he would have died in a horrible plane crash in 1999, his legacy would be assured as the greatest frat rock artist of the 90s. alas, he lives.

WTF? Norman Cook is the shit! How the fuck can anybody hate him? His tunes are SO FUN!!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:38 (nineteen years ago)

Strongo: my whole point is that he did some amazing stuff between 1985-1995. Isn't that *at least* as important as the following decade? We don't judge Bowie so much from 1980 - 2006! Normal Cook has been clever for at least half of his musical life! (admittedly, a lot of Americans might've been introduced to him around the time of the Rockefeller Skank, but still...). Learn up, bitches!

paulhw (paulhw), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

oh, i love him.

He's as great now as he ever was. Because everybody in the entire world is stupid except me, Palookaville was both a critical and commercial disaster. But it's chock full of good stuff. "Wonderful Night" will get any party jumping.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Friday, 5 May 2006 02:50 (nineteen years ago)

Palookaville is horrible and the forthcoming best-of is ineptly sequenced, but he's forever classic to me for the '90s singles and for On the Floor at the Boutique, one of my three or four favorite mix-CDs ever.

"Slash Dot Dash," that's why attack him. INTARNET LOLZ!

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:17 (nineteen years ago)

He made Billy Bragg sing out of something other than his nose for the only time ever.

kit brash (kit brash), Friday, 5 May 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

he's #1! (so why try harder?)

DEEDS NOT WORDS (vahid), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

i'm still not sure how i feel about "the whole church must get drunk", though. i know gospel (hell, black american music) is sort of a sacred cow in british music culture but really, there's a weird condescension to that track that i can't really get with. since hearing that i've sort of been a bit sour on norman.

also, there's not a single fatboy slim track that couldn't be improved by an urban takeover remix. big beat is cool and all but jump-up jungle should have been the real frat-dance sensation of the late 90s.

DEEDS NOT WORDS (vahid), Friday, 5 May 2006 05:35 (nineteen years ago)

beats international are his saving grace.

ambrose (ambrose), Friday, 5 May 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

ambrose otm. "dub be good to me" is one of the best number 1's in history and it preceded 2mnaydjs by a decade.

You could argue that "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" preceded "Dub Be Good To Me" by a decade, if we're talking bootlegs!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 5 May 2006 09:09 (nineteen years ago)

Pizzaman's 'Gotta Man' is his finest moment.

i'm in the mood for YSI

haha i was just going through some old cd singles the other day looking for something else and ran across this. i'd actually say i preferred "Sex on the Streets", and "Trippin On Sunshine" is my choice for Mr Cook's biggest and best

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 5 May 2006 11:55 (nineteen years ago)

and for On the Floor at the Boutique, one of my three or four favorite mix-CDs ever.

Anyone who holds gospel music as a sacred cow should try working for a gospel music company for a little while.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

Senseteria's "Give Me My Auger Back" is not just one of his finest moments but one of my favourithe things ever especially the way it's mixed on that "Beat Up The NME" tape that he did.

Also, the fact that his real name is Quentin is Classic.

Let us now wave our beers in the air for the glory that is "Sho' Nuff"
