Because I am listening to "Monk Plays Ellington" right now, and am very pleased about it.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:09 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah I dig that one. Am I remembering wrong that it's Monk's first leader date?

carl w (carl w), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:21 (nineteen years ago)

I think maybe there's a split lp of monk playing basie and basie playing monk?

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:28 (nineteen years ago)

and by 'monk' in that last post, I mean 'duke.'

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:29 (nineteen years ago)

Really? Are you sure you're not thinking of that Ellington/Coltrane album?

p@reene (Pareene), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:30 (nineteen years ago)

No, I wasn't thinking of the Duke/Trane record, I was thinking about the Basie/Duke 'battle of the bands' record, which is sort of like a split lp, only it's left channel and right channel, and they're playing the different composers' songs together.

Not the same as the thread premise at all, really, but I guess I gotta check it out sometime.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 5 May 2006 03:57 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, sorry, I thought you meant there was a Monk/Ellington split record.

"Oh, sorry, I thought you meant there was a Monk/Ellington split record."

I can't imagine why you'd think that, except that I wrote it (and then sheepishly corrected myself.)

Anyway, both Mermaid Avenues probably fit here, too. At least kinda.

WSQ playing Ellington is pretty cool, too. And they also have a Hendrix disc.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

Oh, "Unforgettable" by Aretha Franklin -- all Dinah Washington-associated songs -- is really great.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 06:35 (nineteen years ago)

Colin Meloy sings trad arr. Shirley Collins...

is surprisingly timeless (unlike most Decemberists). Great selection, competently played & doesn't wear out welcome.

There should be a thread.
