Can anyone comment on the soundtrack to United 93?

hugaboo (space hard), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:34 (nineteen years ago)

HOT summer jams.

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

though using lady marmelade from moulin rouge for the title sequence is kinda played

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

controversial use of mia

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:40 (nineteen years ago)

Having the one guy hum Neil Young songs was a brilliant touch.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:41 (nineteen years ago)

"more than words" over the end credits was really pretty and sad :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:42 (nineteen years ago)

slocki are you for real?

hugaboo (space hard), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

clever eno cues

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

i guess mostly this will engender jokes

hugaboo (space hard), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:45 (nineteen years ago)

You missed how it was mixed into "Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

eye of the tiger during "let's roll" scene was very tasteful

hugaboo (space hard), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

alright that answers my question. no one engages united 93 as anything other than catharsis/history.

hugaboo (space hard), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

playing 'peter gunn' during the ATC interludes was a bit much.

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think that's how it's being engaged here, duder.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:48 (nineteen years ago)

wrong. i think it's an exceptional piece of filmmaking in and of itself. but to answer your question earnestly, i recall the music as consisting mostly of subdued cues (a timpani thump here, a cello line there) and very low-key string figures, something like Howard Shore's "Silence Of The Lambs" soundtrack dialed back even further.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

i think it is. making jokes about the movie being cathartic is still engaging it as catharsis, especially if the jokes are funny because they are tasteless...humor being compounded by the fact that 93 is a "tasteful" movie.

hugaboo (space hard), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

thanks joseph

hugaboo (space hard), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:52 (nineteen years ago)

i haven't seen the movie so i don't want to argue from a vacuum. i was just curious to see if anyone had noticed the soundtrack, since much has been made about the movie being in real time, faithful to true events, and i was interested in how music playing in the background would gel with those arguments.

hugaboo (space hard), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

this is a fairly austere way of looking at soundtracks.

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

i wonder if there's an argument to be made about the rejection of film language, or at least conventional film language, by filmmakers wanting to make tasteful movies about sensitive topics, and whatever that means

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

i thought carl stalling and spike jones were odd choices, but hey, it works.

Lawrence the Looter (Lawrence the Looter), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

i preferred it when the thread was all jokes.

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

'adagio for strings' lol

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Friday, 5 May 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

putting buddy holly, lynyrd skynyrd and aaliyah on the soundtrack wins zero prizes for tact

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

"Freedom!"

Anyone else notice the one word on the print ads is "Unmissable!" O, taste, where art thou?

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:30 (nineteen years ago)

"We'll Meet Again" by Vera Lynn to cap off the last scene was a dandy homage.

(Teasing United 93 versus teasing the actual flight.)

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 5 May 2006 15:51 (nineteen years ago)

However it was kinda nice to hear the Three O'Clock's "Jet Fighter" as the song of choice as the F-16 fighter pilots were scrambling. Sure beats hearing Queen's "One Vision."

LOL Thomas (Chris Barrus), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:12 (nineteen years ago)

I heard over the ending credits is a mash-up of every song banned by Clear Channel post 9/11.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:14 (nineteen years ago)

I thought Music For Airports worked well in the context.

Edward Bax (EdBax), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:16 (nineteen years ago)

The thing about it I thought was, it's okay to play Slayer's Reining Blood one time in a film, but to just take the chorus and loop it nonstop for a whole movie gets a bit tiresome.

Period period period (Period period period), Friday, 5 May 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

time to close up shop

There must be different cuts. The version at my local theater used a loop of the chorus from NIN's Closer.

i've watched this film before and it's fine as these sort of films go but as an installation piece just sitting on a flatscreen in the corner of the room with the sound muted it is really rather good
