Velvet Revolver - Appetite for Deconstruction

Guns n Roses is ready to prove that NYC still has an appetite for destruction. Which has me thinking... why did they name themselves Velvet Revolver.

Three theories -- pick one if you like:

1: Iron Butterfly. Led Zeppelin. Velvet Revolver.

Is Velvet Revolver the reincarnation of the Classic Rock guitar driven supergroups of the 60s and as such they name themselves as an oxymoron with two contractictory elements, objects or ideas?

2: Name yourself after a God. Or two.

Velvet refers to Velvet Underground.
Revolver refers to the Beatles.
Combined you have.... (drum roll...)
A piss low marketing concept?
A grandiose vision of what the band aspires to be?
The Jury is Out.

3: “The Velvet:Revolver::Guns:Roses Parallelism.”

They might as well have called this band AK-47s 'n' Tigerlillies. Or Fragrant 357. Seems most likely the band is a direct rip off (homage to?) Axl's genius.

I think the formula you're looking for is "[something bad-ass] + [something sexy]," which is a pretty natural duality for rock bands to shovel into their names.

You can compare the aesthetic pretty easily to a certain genre of tattoos, which try to strike the same balances based on the same formula:

badass + sexy = romantic

For L.A. (and not just during the hair-metal period), that seemed to be the working model. Just sleazy enough to tittilate, just dangerous enough to make you swoon, and full of a hard-bitten romance between people who wear leather for non-BDSM purposes --
