Camberwell Now

I was turned onto these by a mention on another message board (*gasp*), but can't find any thread on here. Does anyone like them? Who are they? What is the connection with This Heat? S/D? C/D? etc...

Charles Hayward connection. Good stuff. The "All's Well" CD has all their recordings on it I think. 5l5k-able.

adam (adam), Saturday, 6 May 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

Though my favorite non-This Heat Hayward thing is Quiet Sun.

adam (adam), Saturday, 6 May 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

There's mention of them on a This Heat thread here I think. In answer to your questions:

- Yes!
- This Heat drummer plus other guys
- see last answer
- S: "All's Well" discography / D: ????

A bit more than just a Charles Hayward connection with This Heat, as Stephen Rickard was a member too (he was involved in This Heat recordings) and the Camberwell Now also recorded a bunch of late period This Heat tunes, the never-released This Heat Rough Trade single "Greenfingers" in particular. Charles Bullen from This Heat plays on at least one track, and some of their stuff was recorded at the old This Heat haunt Cold Storage.

Of course, the best This Heat side project was either the Lifetones EP, though it wasn't quite up to TH standards except for one astonishing, blazing track. Or it could have been Hayward's "Survive The Gesture" album, the best and songiest thing he's ever done solo.

I need to hear Quiet Sun. What is Lifetones?

Unlimited Toothpicker (eman), Saturday, 6 May 2006 16:53 (nineteen years ago)

Lifetones was gtr player Charles Bullen's side project.

Camberwell Now are totally classic, the All's Well disc has almost everything but is missing a great track from the Sub Rosa comp LP Myths Instructions 1, which is too bad. Also it edited the track "Trade Winds" out of the 1st EP (he weeps quietly), so search those.

And I gotta put a word in for my favorite This Heat related item, Gareth William's Flaming Tunes cassette.

Also, it's unfair of me to call Lifetones a "side project", it was the band Bullen started after TH.

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 6 May 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

Actually Dee would know more about that chronology, as I reread the post above.

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 6 May 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

"sitcom" and "green lantern" are my favorite tracks

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 6 May 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

Well this is very interesting. I remember seeing their name in the indie charts a lot, but I don't think I've ever heard them. Do they sound a lot like This Heat?

honorary joy division roadie (Bimble...), Saturday, 6 May 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Sometimes... they had one member who played a kind of keyboard-triggered tape machine, which gave them a really unique sound along w/Hayward's insane drumming and heavy bass.

sleeve (sleeve), Saturday, 6 May 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

much more accessible than this heat and WAY ahead of its time.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 6 May 2006 20:16 (nineteen years ago)

Very cool group - and agree they were ahead of their time. Surprising that their profile is so much lower than This Heat, as it seems some people might actually have an easier introduction to CN before hitting TH.

Dominique (dleone), Saturday, 6 May 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

To me, one should start with This Heat's "Deceit" and progress from there . . . despite its experimentalism and odd sound, it's a catchy album in spots.

The Camberwell Now have more traditionally structured songs, but you can hear the connection with This Heat - Hayward's voice and drumming are quite unique. They lack a lot of the kinetic energy of This Heat, as well as the "collage" aspect of the band, but they're swell, even if they won't blow minds in the way "Sleep" or "Health & Efficiency" or "Paper Hats" will.

The Lifetones was a one-off project, quite tough to find. It's similar to This Heat, but a little less noisy, more overtly rhythmic. Didn't sell squat.

Dee Xtrovert (dee dee), Sunday, 7 May 2006 02:11 (nineteen years ago)

maybe kinetic means something different where you are from....

the camberwell now is fantastic stuff...i would give it to someone at the same time as Deceit...i think TCN would win...agree with Dom.

Ooh, I am.

adam (adam), Monday, 8 May 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't Camberwell Now have a cut on the "Miniatures" LP, too?

one year passes...

Last night in my local shop I saw this used cd by Charles Hayward with Peter Brotzmann, Keiji Haino, Yoshihide Otomo and Tatsuya Yoshida. It was called Double Agent(s) - Live in Japan Volume Two. I didn't get it but will probably go back and pick it up later. Just wondered if anyone has heard it or knows anything. I assume it's free jazzy.

stingy, Friday, 21 September 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

I think Hayward did a series of 3 discs like that, various in-Japan live collabs. From what I remember reading about them when they came out, I think they are a bit more varied and electronic than a straight free jazz thing. But I have not heard them. Based on the lineup and a used price, I would buy it in a second.

ten months pass...

Can one find the un-released This Heat take on Greenfingers anywhere? I know there is a live clip of it on youtube. The boxset was not so heavy on oddities like that. Of course if it doesn't exist that would explain it...

four years pass...

Just downloaded the 'All's Well' comp off iTunes...astonishing stuff...one of the only things I've bought in the last year and it sounds fresher than anything I've heard in ages...pre empts loads of musical styles by about 30 years...

Have had the Ghost Trade reissue for a while and given it a few listens without quite clicking - but tonight it is really hitting the spot - what an excellent band. I guess I have to seek out the EPs collection now.
