list what songs come after this one. (or before?)

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:22 (nineteen years ago)

wikithingie says dre's original mix of "my name is" used "i got the", but siffre wouldn't let him keep it because of "lyrics he perceived to be homophobic" .. now i could be wrong but while eminem's lyrics in that song are wildly offensive, isn't that the one song where eminem DOESN'T say "fag"?

2. "my name is" - eminem

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

beatnuts/jigga/eminem/epmd notwithstanding -

2) gary bartz - celestial blues

xpost you bastard

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:36 (nineteen years ago)

ahem trace answered that question on that other thread surely

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:37 (nineteen years ago)

well those are all OLDER blount so i do know some of them to hear em, but sure, point taken

could we make a comp just of songs that sample "i got the" without it getting repetitive? it might need another big edifice to support/oppose it.. i made a comp once that was just "take me to the river" and "my boy lollipop" and even that needed a little more breathing room.. i think i put on grace jones' version of "la vie en rose" and something else

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

what other thread?

3) foxy brown - hot spot

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:45 (nineteen years ago)

4) mike jones - 'my name is' freestyle

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

5. noosha fox - "s-s-single bed"

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

its funny cuz im pretty sure pre-dre the siffre piano break was untouched & everybody samping it ever took snippets or that bass hook from the first 2 minutes or so, its like this ultracatchy loop was just sitting there & no cratedigger would be so gauche as to use it

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

i know tiger ranks - party wit me rocks the em loop but thats a remix or some shit post-99 right??

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that's from 2000 or 01 i think.

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, way too obvious! i love how that break appears in the song, it's like sombody's mixing into it - it's a different key, feels like a difference tempo, the first vamp fades down..

xpost no idea!! who's tiger ranks a dancehall dude?

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

6. tiger ranks - "party wit me"

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

yeah its on 500% dynamite

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

i always loved how it shows up halfway in the song too, i figured the point of this thread initially was to list soul/r&b joints that sound like singing over rap beats mary j/bad boy remix style

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

i said epmd earlier but its actually a def squad song-

6) def squad - countdown

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

hhahaha @ "singing over rap beats" ... you mean er people singing the actual songs that people sampled from??

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

but yes, exactly - to me the ultimate of that would be "you gets no love" by faith evans, and this is the dream mix so! on it goes!

7. faith evans - "you gets no love"

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

there's a new jagged edge album coming out

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:04 (nineteen years ago)

soul/r&b joints that sound like singing over rap beats

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

unless you were rockin the siffre back in 79 & when em dropped you were like 'oh shit! my boy labi!'

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

i've meant to start a thread on this but there's this progression you hear on alot of early early 70s stuff - i know it's in 'thank you for talkin to me africa' and i know it pops up in a funkadelic track and i think it pops up on jack johnson to, shit was damn near everywhere - and that little buried hook (cf. that jackson five sounding hook in 'more more more' that len sampled for another halfway hook) always sounded like a sleeker slimmer model it evolved into.

j blount (papa la bas), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

yeah yeah.

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

(xpost)

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

i just thought that was funny

blount are you talking about the piano riff in steal my sunshine?

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

thats andrea true connection

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

because you know i will use any excuse to put that song in any mix anywhere.

xpost yeah, i read a story about the making of that record, and the story is better than the record actually

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:10 (nineteen years ago)

8) lynden david hall (RIP) - the story of jimmy lee

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:14 (nineteen years ago)

9) tom scott - today

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

10) syl johnson - concrete reservation

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:32 (nineteen years ago)

11) dennis coffey & lyman woodward trio - its your thing

-+-+-+++- (ooo), Saturday, 6 May 2006 22:41 (nineteen years ago)

haha i don't think i know any of those!!

i just realized that my first gut reaction to the piano breakdown in "i got the" is the beatnuts. if anything condenses and defines the whole beatnuts sound it's that breakdown.
