Only ancillarily related to music, but an iTunes question

As I housesit for my father, I'm using his fine record collection to burn things for myself.

When I rip an album into iTunes 6 for Windows, it copies the files into his mymusic folder. I can then listen to the songs, generally. However, songs disappear from the folder (even as it says in the get info that they're still there), and when I attempt to play them a second time, I get the "!" and a message that the file cannot be located. Sure enough, pop open the folder and the damn file isn't there. I can try reimporting as many times as I like, and I get the same result.

What's going on? I use Macs, and I've never had this trouble. What the fuck? Why does it keep wanting me to locate things? Why are they sometimes in the file folder and sometimes not? Is this some sort of DRM scheme I'm unfamiliar with? Does Jesus hate my father's computer? WHAT THE FUCK?

the problem is Windows

Problem is Windows-- you need to specify the exact folder that you want your ripped or downloaded tracks to be copied to from a Temporary Folder. Otherwise, they stay in the temporary folder and get deleted after a day, or a few.

Goddammit. That's really stupid to set it up that way...

ok, further question from the father in question. I have been importing into itunes for quite a few version snow, and have set things up into named folders in itunes (as per #2). Today I log on and over half my library is gone. Most of these were in named folders for ove ra year (thus not in some temproary folder for two or three days).

I don't necessarily expet an anwer here. I am going to also ask on AskMe and on Apple forums. I do not believe that it is a simple as "it is a windows problem" because it has been operating perfectly tolerably (not as good as on a Mac, but OK) for some time.
