Hey there,
Glad I've found a page like ILM... seems that there's enough specialists over here to get some answers to my questions ! Here we go: I'm DESPERATLY lookin for a list of the 20 best and essential NOISY POP albums (or 12'') recorded between 1986 and, let's say, 1990 (Oasis killed the noise). For the moment, I only know My Bloody Valentine's 12'' and albums ('tho I really prefered what they recorded betore "Isn't anything")+ Ride's "Nowhere" / "Goin Blanck Again", + J&MC, and I stand by you to list me some nuggets of the same kind of greatness... Please NOISY POP ONLY !!! Thanx !!! Here's a buncha bands I was told were cool, but I've never heard them yet ( and I really wonder if they really worth a spin): Shop Assistants, Pop Guns, Family Cat, Flatmates, Rosehips, Strawberry Story, Fat Tulips, Choo Choo Train, Mighty Lemon Drops, Bubblegum Splash, Girl Of My Best Friend, Mayfields, Nightblooms, Telescopes, Chapterhouse, Swirlies, Moose.... Please avoid also any neurasthenis stuff ala Catherine Wheel or Slowdive ! Can't wait to read your DEFINITIVE LIST of the GREATEST NOISY POP RECORDS EVER RELEASED !!! sylvain / switzerland

Pastels, 14 Iced Bears, Revolver, early Field Mice, early AR Kane...

I can't say I have a strong desire to hear the majority of the bands you mention again, but I would LOVE to be able to hear them for the first time...

Try the Charlottes.

i think that this type of music may have been discussed on ILM before ... not sure though, try doing a search

seriously though there are a bazillion threads on this; you'll probably have better luck sifting through them to find what you want than you willl tearing '06 ILM away from the latest blog outrage

"bazillion threads on this" ? I've searched the Internet during hours in the hope of finding a fan page about that kind of music... and really NO RESULT for the moment, apart some dudes like me who have heard only a couple of records, which are always the same (MBV, J&MC, etc) ! What I'm looking for are pages of that kind: http://members.home.nl/patriczik/bestall2.htm (... made by a TRUE FAN, and thru which I discovered FABULOUS music). There's probably tons of good noisy pop records outhere that remain in the dark, that have stand of the test of time, and is still to be rediscovered... the hunt goes on.

Sylvain, there are billions of threads on HERE, specifically. There's the search function at the base of this and all the site pages, for instance. Did you use that or not? (If you say no, then frankly I'm locking the thread.)

sometimes i wonder if the search function werent at the top of the page, in a slightly bigger font, then we wouldnt have so many duplicate threads

shop assistants-fantastic, totally essential fuzzsaw pop, the reissue 'will anything happen' was great but you'll need to pay a lot for it now
popguns-totally missable, most of their records live in the bargain bin
family cat-dunno, probably as dull as small factory
flatmates-pretty excellent, but not as great as shop assistants, ther are two comps, they are of similar quality, share quite a few songs
rosehips-see the flatmates, one compilation, don't know if it is as prized as the shop assistants one
strawberry story-too saccharine for my tastes, not much for the easy peazy lemon squeezy
fat tulips-great, totally underappreciated, the nostalgia ep is great
choo choo train-mediocre, this is ric menck and paul chastain right? they annoy more than they thrill
mighty lemon drops-mediocre, later stuff was sorta just bad
bubblegum splash-i only have a couple records, pretty good, not essential
girl of my best friend-dunno
mayfields-dunno
nightblooms-pretty good, kinda stilted never really made a classic pop song
telescopes-highly praised here but not that great, still making boring records currently
chapterhouse-i love them, everyone else would probably say mediocre
swirlies-what to do about them is genius, park the car by the side of the road is genius, blondertongue was a bit of a letdown, redeemed by glittering salons and the last mini-lp thing
moose-i don't like the shoegazer moose as much as country moose but everything they've released is classic. honey bee is one of the greatest albums ever but it isn't noisy.

THanx keyth for those comments.... just what I was expected from a list like ILM. And NO, I haven't checked the "search" option here... but will do.

keyth is OTM regarding Moose, great shoegazers but better when they lost those effects.

BeeOK (boo radley), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

I like how Moose are sort of the Charlatans of their scene -- in otherwards, they kept going and outlasted all the bigger names at the time.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

funny thing, Honey Bee is my favorite Moose record too.

As for the thread itself, I'll add in Moonshake, Th' Faith Healers and Loop - the artsier side of noisy pop, less shoegazery but more in line with a lot of the noisier c86 stuff.

and also seconded the Golden Dawn and I'll add in Action Painting!

rentboy (rentboy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

second the Shop Assistants; i'd go with the song 'Safety Net'. the intro is noisy enough to qualify as 'noisy pop' i think.

Carlos Keith (Buck_Wilde), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:29 (nineteen years ago)

If you like the Shop Assts., Flatmates, etc., you might want to check out Talulah Gosh -- not all their stuff is _that_ noisy, though they had their moments ("Testcard Girl" etc.). Still great stuff -- the best of that lot IMO (not that the others weren't great). They have a compilation on K Records which I'm pretty sure is still in print.

I'd also suggest Black Tambourine, Henry's Dress (the EP more than the full-length), Rocketship, and maybe Tiger Trap -- a bit after '90, though. Basically, the American version of the sound (influenced by some of the stuff there, e.g. Calvin Johnson produced Tiger Trap's album).
