Less Than Zero soundtrack.

Why are you sorry?

mcd (mcd), Monday, 8 May 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

Can "99 Problems" be the best Rick Rubin album? I think it can.

regular roundups (Dave M), Monday, 8 May 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

probably Danzig

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 8 May 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

Wow, tough call here.

It's one of these:
Reign in Blood
Raising Hell

Three of those are seminal to their respective genres, the other is just amazing.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Monday, 8 May 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

I'll take the Masters of Reality's debut over the BloodSugar... Then again, I like the music better.

QuantumNoise (Justin Farrar), Monday, 8 May 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

Best production job, or best album? "Unchained," "License to Ill," "Radio," "Raising Hell," "Wildflowers," "Electric," "Reign in Blood" my favorites. "Make Believe" and "Out of Exile" among my least favorite.

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Monday, 8 May 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

they totally forgot Wolfsbane in the Wiki entry

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

it's ok though, I'll hop over and update it.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

Untitled - The Faint (2006/2007) is going to be the worst

city of gyros (chaki), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

probably Danzig

yeah. followed by reign in blood.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

wait, i have to second this question:

"Best production job, or best album?"

i was going by the former.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Untitled - Metallica (2006/2007)

This could be very very good, but almost certainly won't be.

chap who would dare to be a nerd, not a geek (chap), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

I was also going by the former. I certainly don't think the Danzig album is better overall *music* than RIB

thing about the Danzig record is I don't think that it would have worked with any other producer; as a way of "introducing" Danzig's new sound, Rubin was perfect. and he gave the whole thing this great slightly-echoey room sound that lent the whole record this kinda creepy vibe. favorite production touch: the bells on "End of Time"

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 8 May 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

yeah if you go by best album instead of best production its radio or tougher than leather

REIGN IN BLOOD. Next!

Terrible Cold (Terrible Cold), Monday, 8 May 2006 20:07 (nineteen years ago)

So far, it's sounding like the Dixie Chicks will be up there with Slayer and Cash. Which in the Rubin world, makes perfect sense.

Grey, Ian (IanBrooklyn), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

Licensed to Ill - Beastie Boys (1986)
Raising Hell - Run-D.M.C. (1986)
Reign in Blood - Slayer (1986)

If he'd stopped right there, he'd be a justified legend.
Unfortunately, he kept going. And going. And going...

REIGN IN BLOOD. Next!
-- Terrible Cold

Yep, yep, yep, but Manic Frustration is a close second. The epitome of "pure hard rock crunch", for what that cliché's worth.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 07:02 (nineteen years ago)

No Love For Electric by The Cult? the album that introduced a generation of indie-rockers to the joys of cock-rock? ahwell...

my pic is Raising Hell, runnerup: Licensed to Ill. glad to see the unfairly maligned Tougher Than Leatherhere

couldn't find Mick Jagger's Wandering Spirit on the list. It's actually not that bad, better than any post-1981 Stones LP.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 09:28 (nineteen years ago)

i always hated how the Danzig album sounded. or i did when it came out anyway. My faves would be:

radio, licensed to ill, raising hell, reign in blood, south of heaven, and masters of reality. they all sound great. south of heaven and masters of reality probably mean the most to me as albums. and radio was the first rap full-length to blow my little mind. what an album.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 09:41 (nineteen years ago)

i'd like to give a shout-out to his "we will rock you" remix. i love that fuckin' thing.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 09:42 (nineteen years ago)

reign in blood, duh

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 09:47 (nineteen years ago)

Radio.

wtin, Tuesday, 9 May 2006 11:28 (nineteen years ago)

"Raising Hell" is the best album, "Licensed to Ill" is the best produced.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 11:35 (nineteen years ago)

Blood Sugar Sex Magik. But it's a tough call. Reign In Blood is great as well but as a producer I think it's the former one that really got me.

elgolfo (elgolfo), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

I'll go with the two Trouble records (TROUBLE and MANIC FRUSTRATION). And WHY THE FUG hasn't RR (or whoever) rereleased these things? They've been outta print for years and fetch totally loony prices on eBay ('specially the s/t) (which I still don't own, so if anyone wants to send me their extra copy, feel free).

Handsome Dan, Wednesday, 10 May 2006 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

Handsome Dan, would you settle for a CD-R of that Trouble s/t? (I've only got the one copy, alas, for which I indeed paid a loony price on ebay.)

Myonga Von Bonhomie (Myonga Von Bontee), Thursday, 11 May 2006 00:55 (nineteen years ago)

The Cash records, and Raising Hell.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 11 May 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

I was listening to Deloused again just the other day, followed by their second album, and as far a production as an influence goes, it has to be said that Rubin pretty much made Mars Volta worth listening to. For purely sentimental reasons I'm going with American Recordings,(snif) although 'logically speaking' it would have to be Reign In Blood.

Makrugaik (makrugaik), Thursday, 11 May 2006 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

Limp Bizkit - Results May Vary

asdf, Thursday, 11 May 2006 22:00 (nineteen years ago)

Andrew Dice Clay - Andrew Dice Clay

i lol'd

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Thursday, 11 May 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

Masters of Reality or Toxicity.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Friday, 12 May 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

my guy!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 12 May 2006 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

I just remembered an album that was left off that list, Rubin was the exec producer of the soundtrack to Howard Stern's Private Parts movie. That was kind of a fun clusterfuck of random classic rock staples, movie dialogue, weird collaborations (RHCP with LL Cool J, Ozzie and Type O Negative covering "Pictures of Matchstick Men"), and the only Jane's Addiction semi-reunion that ever resulted in a good song, "Hard Charger" by Porno For Pyros.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Friday, 12 May 2006 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

LISTEN TO THE SUMMER DEMOS. RUBIN REALLY DIDNT DO ANYTHING.GREAT ALBUM THOUGH!

city of gyros (chaki), Friday, 12 May 2006 06:21 (nineteen years ago)

what an icredible list! i had to say any 1 of the 4 ChiliPeppers, Audioslave running a close 2nd or perhaps even Beasties - looking extremely forward to what he does with kidrock!!!

TD in Houston, Monday, 15 May 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

'LISTEN TO THE SUMMER DEMOS. RUBIN REALLY DIDNT DO ANYTHING.'

If so, maybe that was a good thing. Some people in the recording field are appalled by the sound of his albums but they can't seem to agree where the process goes bad. Some put the blame on Rubin's mastering engineer of choice, Vlado Meller, but others defend that guy and say he is just delivering the type of mastering Rick wants or that the damage was done during mixing. The most common complaints are that the music is overly compressed with extreme clipping and pumping. Californication gets bagged on the most it seems and it's interesting that Deloused is mentioned on this thread because it is talked about as well.

Here are a couple threads from recording forums if anybody wants to check out some of the discussions:

Either "American Recordings 3" or "American Recordings 4".

Generally, Rick Rubin is an excellent producer who has just worked with genres that cannot be good no matter how good the producer.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 11:17 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm. I didn't realise he had produced "Wildflowers". "Wildflowers" is my pick then.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 11:18 (nineteen years ago)

two weeks pass...
Dixie Chicks--Taking The Long Way

Even though the first song has one of the most cringe-worthy examples of autotune I've ever heard.
