Daft Punk -- "Electroma"

Hmmm. As the legendary Spencer C. said in a bulletin just now:

For you non-francophones, here is the urgent & key bit about Daft Punk's upcoming project.

"Daft Punk's 'Electroma' is visual and musical and which follows the history of two robots in their search to become human."

And to quote Spencer again:

Shades of the KLF's The White Room? The Man Who Fell to Earth? Pinnochio???

daft punk and robots? whatever, lol!

Y'know, I didn't listen to Human After All when it came out because I couldn't bear to have my heart broken. I loved Discovery so much that I couldn't deal with how bad the new album was supposed to be. I wrote it off as total shit, and last week I finally broke down and bought it. It's not that bad at all. The concept, that this is what it would sound like if robots were REALLY making the music, is interesting, and the repetition doesn't bother me. Granted, it's no Discovery, but it's allright. This Electroma thing could be very good or... very not. I just hope I can see these fuckers in concert one day.

Joseph B. Cowart (flamingrev), Monday, 8 May 2006 22:19 (nineteen years ago)

if this strongly adheres, in all ways, to the very-early-80s aesthetic of those photos, it will be awesome.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Monday, 8 May 2006 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

It could be a remake of Tom Petty's "You Got Lucky" video.

Do we know if ANY Coachella performances were professionally filmed?

Matthew E. Armstrong (gensu3k1), Monday, 8 May 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

Daft Punk should hang it up. Why don't bands do like UK sitcoms and call it quits after three seasons?

Tracey Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 8 May 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

Whereas individual singers can go on forever? Bigot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 May 2006 22:56 (nineteen years ago)

Do we know if ANY Coachella performances were professionally filmed?

I am pretty sure they all were, for AT&Ts blue room thing and future coachella dvds *cha-ching*

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:07 (nineteen years ago)

Daft Punk should hang it up. Why don't bands do like UK sitcoms and call it quits after three seasons?

Right on. Led Zeppelin IV is pure testimonial to this.

"AND THERE'S A WHINAH DOWN THE ROOOOOUUUUOOOOAAAD!"

DOQQUN (donut), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:11 (nineteen years ago)

Some Great Reward was truly an awful album! And don't get me started on His'n'Hers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:12 (nineteen years ago)

Autobahn.... crap.

DOQQUN (donut), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

Ziggy Stardust was the beginning of the end... sad really.

DOQQUN (donut), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:18 (nineteen years ago)

Clearly all of these acts should have followed the Foghat rule.

DOQQUN (donut), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:19 (nineteen years ago)

I disagree strongly with Tracer's statement. Coachella was the best live performance by anyone EVER. I am filled with excitement and anticipation for whatever they decide to do next!

i'm from hollywood, Monday, 8 May 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

x-post -- Yes, yes indeed. Then the world would have been spared the likes of Controversy, Stand! and other such nonsense.

(We heart you, Tracer.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

this "Electroma" concept might make sense if Daft Punk were doing the robot thing from day one and if their identities were, on some level, mysterious.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

"Hey Bowie? People know about you, fuggetahabout that Ziggy Stardust crap.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

this "Electroma" concept might make sense if Daft Punk were doing the robot thing from day one and if their identities were, on some level, mysterious.

Counterpoint: robots are still totally bitchin' awesome. Possibly (pending extensive testing) awesome to the max. And Interstella was quite nice.

DOQQUN (donut), Monday, 8 May 2006 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

I just read somewhere (read: french touch nerd forum: http://frenchtouch.forumactif.com/index.htm) that 'Human After All' was rushed to fulfill their contractual obligation to Virgin and that it wasn't their serious efforts. More emphasis was on their mystery project, which I suppose is outlined above. Hmmmm. [I still like HAA regardless, just sayin]

pher (pher), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:14 (nineteen years ago)

I love HAA quite a lot! Great album all around. If that was a contract breaker they should do more like that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

so you're suggesting they should break more contracts?

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:18 (nineteen years ago)

Depends how many they signed with RoboSatan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 04:28 (nineteen years ago)

Noooooooo! Human after all is horrible. They even managed to kill the one good riff on the single by looping it to fuck and not taking it anywhere. It was rushed and it sounded rushed. It's the only album I've taken back to the shop. The artwork was shit too. It made baby jesus cry.

JoseMaria (JoseMaria), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 07:12 (nineteen years ago)

Electroma, a shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist. Guy-Manuel and Thomas, two young loners on a crusade to champion the cause of the innocent, the helpless, the powerless, in a world of criminals who operate above the law.

-- Tracey Hand (tracerhan...), May 8th, 2006.

word that. truth up. it is now ELEVEN YEARS since 'da funk', right? and it's FIVE since they did anything hot.

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 07:29 (nineteen years ago)

How many times do I have to say it. Any of you with even a passing interest in them would have been BLOWN AWAY by their show (whether you only like "Da Funk" or are more of a "Digital Love" kind of person). It was basically the fulfillment of what I thought my first concert was going to be like, but have been let down ever since - until now! Our long national nightmare is over!!! It was like something that will be revived in Las Vegas in 20 years time when they start opening ironic french robot casinos just for us (but of course, the thing about daft punk is that I believe they're quite serious).

i'm from hollywood, Tuesday, 9 May 2006 07:35 (nineteen years ago)

wvs, brocheese. i saw them half a lifetime ago. it was awesome. but isn't there something a bit blaaaaaaaah about seeing half-decade-old songs, no matter how elaborate the show.

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 07:39 (nineteen years ago)

if i had a sword i would commit sepuku for allowing myself to miss coachella. it's a shame we live in a time when 5 years old = out to pasture. i'm just as guilty of that sort of reasoning as the next, but a lot of daft punk's 5 year old songs still sound 5 years from now. i'm not saying that the production is terribly advanced or anything, but it sounds as though records that might have influenced them then are still coming out today.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 08:02 (nineteen years ago)

i bow to no man -- well, actually this is ilm, so maybe a few people -- in my daft punk love, but you know, time passes n'all.

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 08:06 (nineteen years ago)

that new live show appears to trounce their old live show tenfold.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 08:42 (nineteen years ago)

i hate pink floyd.

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 08:45 (nineteen years ago)

since when did Floyd rock a 909?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 08:49 (nineteen years ago)

i dunno but they had a triumphant light show.

the Enrique who acts like some kind of good taste gestapo (Enrique), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 08:51 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, despite loving the first album and hating discovery, i couldn't have given two shits about them a week ago. plus, i loathe HAA, but i get chills just watching these videos on youtube. seriously: COMPLETELY BLOWN AWAY.
out of them all, this is the one i keep coming back to.

something less threatening (heywood), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 09:16 (nineteen years ago)

Daft Punk made dance music easy for people who don't like dance. Even if you hate them, that's a fucking feat in itself.

Plus, as someone mentioned, robots are still bitchin'.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Thursday, 1 June 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

Why don't they come to Australia?
Does anyone know when Electroma will reach Australia? Even if it's only on DVD...

Black Arkestra (Black Arkestra), Friday, 2 June 2006 01:02 (nineteen years ago)

ehem peeps, please head over to your nearest mp3 blog aggregator because a soundboard (!!!) recording of daft punk at coachella has surfaced. holy crap.

Roz (Roz), Friday, 2 June 2006 07:23 (nineteen years ago)

where's?

RJG (RJG), Friday, 2 June 2006 08:36 (nineteen years ago)

Sounds great, thanks!

However, if I had to put money on the source, I don't think I'd say "soundboard" - there's something not right when listening through headphones, it's not stereo enough, like it has been recorded with 1 mic. The quality is outstanding, so they were probably less than two feet from the speakers, but SB? Not entirely convinced.

StanM (StanM), Friday, 2 June 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that was wrong information i got from somewhere else. It's actually a combination of direct audio (stereo) as well as a microphone for the crowd that can be heard most during the breakdowns and freakouts.

and Guy-Manuel was the leaker, apparently. Awesome!

Roz (Roz), Friday, 2 June 2006 15:32 (nineteen years ago)

Who cares about the source? It's incroyable!!!

Just to say: These guys were incredible live last Friday (as certain ILXors were drunkdialled to be shouted at about how amazing it was found out, sorry Konal)! As near as anything else to the Coachella set but the light show and the fact that I.was.seeing.daft.punk.LIVE!1!1!! made it amazing.

Some clips posted at Pitchfork today here.

Is the soundtrack going to be entirely non-Daft Punk, or a mixture?

Either way, the soundtrack is going to be fantastic, regardless of the quality of the film.

Z S, Wednesday, 4 April 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)

from what i can tell it's non-DP unless the boys have gone 70's rock for the soundtrack.

i've gotten through half of it twice now (and had to stop watching for other reasons each time) and it's very very very 'white room', the opening shots of the two driving through the desert is like 12 minutes long.

the music is TRULY excellent.

and the film is excellent too, though i expect that your mileage will vary based on how much you like the music they pick and your willingness to sit still for an hour and listen to the music they pick.

you gotta respect daft punk.

some bands settle for making a BACK TO MINE or DJ KICKS, these guys make a mixtape and a 70s art movie to go with it.

Jibe, Saturday, 30 June 2007 11:52 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm totally going to see it again, hopefully in a quieter setting (although it was a fun crowd, having the cobrasnake taking pictures beforehand set the tone).

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 30 June 2007 21:41 (eighteen years ago)

Can't wait for the DVD, since there's no way in hell this will see a theatrical release in Alabama.

i was gonna go see it last night but i heard there were already 100 ppl in line at 10pm so i just went and karaoked at the bowling alley. sort of regretting it now.

max, Saturday, 30 June 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

OK, i went tonight. There was a party going on in the apartment just above the theater and we could here all their music. It was annoying but it led to some amusing coincidences.

*****SOME SLIGHT SPOILERS*****

Like when silver robot gives up and stares at gold robot, one of Mika's grating songs came on and we got the chorus "Relax, take it eaaaaaaaeaaaaaaaaasy" just when gold bot set the bomb on silver. Or, at the very end, just after seeing gold bot in flames, we got Johny Hallyday's "Allumez le feu".

Excuse the self promotion, but for any London ilxors, this is showing as part of a Daft Punk double bill along with Interstella 5555 on June 7th at Roxy Bar and Screen in Borough. I don't remember Electroma ever getting much of a run in cinemas apart from the ICA when it was released so this is a chance to see it on the big screen.
