Chapel Hill, Stand Up

Any ILMers from Chapel Hill or the triangle area? I'm moving next month. What's good?

theghostrobot (theghostrobot), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

I used to live in Greensboro and eastern NC as a child. I saw the majority of shows there in my young life, but beyond that I don't have many fond memories. The Orange County Social Club may still be my favorite bar ever though.

Jeff. (Jeff), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 02:12 (nineteen years ago)

CD Alley in downtown Chapel Hill is fantastic. I went there when I was visiting friends and it basically outstrips every record store in Boston put together.

Sean Braudis (Sean Braudis), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

Resist any urge to explore Charlotte - waste of time.

pleased to mitya (mitya), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

CD Alley cleaned me the fuck out... but it felt oh so good.

Pepper's Pizza!

Charlotte has a good airport.

DOQQUN (donut), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 02:48 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, I dropped 65 bucks I didn't have when I was there.

Sean Braudis (Sean Braudis), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 03:26 (nineteen years ago)

There's lot's that's good. Having to drive everywhere is the only major bad. You can get a head start on bitching about the local music scene here:

http://groups.google.com/group/alt.music.chapel-hill

Listen to some upcoming local gigs here

http://trianglerock.com/

and debate restaurants

http://groups.google.com/group/triangle.dining

And here's the college radio stations:

the eccletic and always impressive WXYC in Chapel Hill
http://www.wxyc.org/

the older and crankier hepcats of WXDU in Durham
http://wxdu.org/

and the metallic loudness of Raleigh's WKNC
http://wknc.org/

...which more or less sums up the difference in the music scenes of the three cities, too.

bendy (bendy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 03:57 (nineteen years ago)

I used to live down there. The thing I miss most about the place are the Andouille slices at Pepper's Pizza. I also thought WKNC wasn't metal anymore...

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

Don't get too attached to the Cat's Cradle - I believe they're planning on knocking it down in the next year or so to rebuild it closer to the road (which strikes me as rather pointless). Also, the owner of CD Alley is leaving, I hear, though the shop will still continue.

I also second Jeff on the OCSC front. Also, if you're moving next month, then the place might seem a little quiet, but don't be fooled, as the students will be back in force come August!

This is true.

"I also thought WKNC wasn't metal anymore..."

This is also true.

one word: Carrburritos

where are people going to park? allow me to third the OCSC. UNC is on my list of grad schools im applying to.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously though, Chapel Hill is small and doesn't require a lot of exploring. Walk all the way up and down Franklin St. and Rosemary St., and you'll have seen all the commercial things really worth seeing in the city. It is worth exploring Durham and Raleigh.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:15 (nineteen years ago)

it's only worth exploring Durham if you want to get shot.

(I say this as a lifelong Durham resident, not some preppy Duke student who's just set foot outside of New Jersey for the first time)

sixteen sergeants, Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

Chapel Hill is great for small, independent type businesses. Whenever you need a bigger, corporatized atmosphere, start heading out of the city towards Durham. Get in 15-501 South and it'll take you to everything you'd want: Best Buy, Target, Barnes and Noble, Borders, etc.

xpost
true, but Durham has some cool stuff in it. Downtown has a few decent bars, and one somewhat-nice record shop.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

preppy Duke student who's just set foot outside of New Jersey for the first time

Which begs the question: what is up with NJ people moving to CH/Durham? There's quite a number of NJ expats there. Chapel Hill eerily mirrors mid-90's Main Street Metuchen [ie: nice, lots of independent businesses, etc] and every time I visit I run into a former high school classmate of mine.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

lime and basil rules!

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

also, in my extremely limited experience, local 506 is better than OCSC. jukebox at OCSC is the best around, but people at OCSC seem a little douchier.

SQUARECOATS (plsmith), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:03 (nineteen years ago)

Carrburritos

OTMFM!

xpost! HEY! That's where I was every Tuesday for the past month! :) It's a good crowd, although a few scaries from Weaver Street lawn hang out there...

carson dial (carson dial), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:09 (nineteen years ago)

People actually go to OCSC to drink though. Unless there's a show going on at the Local 506, there's usually no more than a bartender and two dudes in there. I mean, if that's what you want...

like murderinging (modestmickey), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

the Durham-hating is really ripe - in Chapel Hill, turn right off old airport road from Franklin to see all the hideous strip mall you can stomach, nestled in among the picturesque trees. Half that shit on 15-501 is also Chapel Hill's headache. Really grotesque (and quasi-classist) snootiness in the "Durham's got crime! CH is nice!" bullshit.

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

no mention of Hell so far?...great jukebox (better than OCSC?) and awesome dance parties.

-also wxyc (89.3) amazingness seconded.

Trace Henry (Trace), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:20 (nineteen years ago)

Where is Hell? I moved away from CH while 18, so I'm not too familiar with the bar scene. All I know is what I've found from my trips back.

My personal favorite bar is the one under the Wine Bar on Franklin St, but OCSC is nice.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

I stumbled into the OCSC the night it opened. Had several rounds and the owner was extremely nice so I left a 10 as a tip. Walking down the street after leaving she came running down the street asking if a made a mistake. So nice of her!

The worst thing about CH is that there is a whole lot of NC around it and even more American South.

Jeff. (Jeff), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:55 (nineteen years ago)

I grew up in NC and attended UNC, and after being away for a few years I'm moving back to Raleigh at the end of this month, so of course this thread has just tripled my excitement level.

Carrburritos = good
Cosmic Cantina = better

there's also an excellent secondhand book/record shop called Nice Price that has locations in Chapel Hill and Raleigh - they've taken a considerable amount of my money (and even more of my dad's) over the years.

I wish Chapel Hill was MORE southern! (I don't understand what you comment means anyway).
xpost

Josh Love (screamapillar), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 15:56 (nineteen years ago)

I tend to prefer the burritos at Cosmic, but no way in hell Cosmic's salsas can measure up to the majesty of Carrburritos. Those are some of the best salsas in the whole damn country.

There's a new record store next to Durham's Cosmic - it's where University Barbers used to be, upstairs!! Spend your money there!

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

Hell is at the corner of Rosemary and Henderson, below street level. It just celebrated its 9th birthday last month. One of the bartenders used to operate Two Way Pull, the store previously located where CD Alley is now. Other good bars are Fuse, which has a nice patio, Lantern, and the Reservoir (located in what used to be the rock venue Go!)

As far as shows, no one has mentioned Nightlight, which is next door to Fuse and is also a used bookstore during the day. They cater to more out-there types of music, and have hosted stuff like NNCK and Wolf Eyes (in fact Aaron Dilloway is playing there later this summer as part of No Future Fest 2).

The Duke Coffeehouse started to have some better shows last year, including Six Organs, Jack Rose/Fursaxa, Jonathan Kane, but will probably be laying low for the summer I imagine.

There's also King's in Raleigh, which is where Rocket from the Tombs played a few years ago. They tend to get some good shows but you have to pay attention to their schedule if you live in Chapel Hill because you might miss something.

Stingy (stingy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:05 (nineteen years ago)

Ringside in Durham is also really fun on occasion and highly underrated IMO. Anybody know whatever happened to the "Dysembler" night they used to have?

Trace Henry (Trace), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 16:15 (nineteen years ago)

Dyssembler kinda went away when the main dude (who also co-started Nightlight) moved to Germany. However some of those DJ's still do dance parties at Nightlight, you just gotta check the schedule. Look for DJ's Admit-it, One Duran, or Misty Touch. Also the frequeNC gang DJ there fairly often, they're great.

Oooh. Because the Durham cosmic is infinitely times better than the CH one. No better place to go with drunk friends at 2 in the morning! I can't wait for my trip there in the next couple weeks. CD's, burritos, beer, cheap books, what else could you ask for?

sixteen sergeants, Tuesday, 9 May 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

I didn't think Durham was really all that bad when I visited a couple of years ago. My Chapel Hill-living, Duke-employed cousin kind of bad-mouthed it, but I thought it was rather quaint. Some really pretty old neighborhoods with affordable housing (unlike CH, sheesh). It reminded me a lot of midtown Memphis in that respect.

Will (will), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 17:11 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, it's really not that bad; I just like bashing it. I kind of, how you say... "hate this town and wish I lived in Chapel Hill."

sixteen sergeants, Tuesday, 9 May 2006 17:12 (nineteen years ago)

Rent in Chapel Hill, buy in Durham. Everyone who's been here a while will tell you that CH ain't what it used to be, if you take "what it used to be" to be the "Next Seattle" mid-ninties. But music-scene-wise, it's still more of what it was than any other area. Chapel Hill gets more professional and upscale every year, which prices people out of buying there. Or even renting. But if you are looking to start a band or just club a lot, CH is the place to live. Durham improves, getting a fair number of aging Chapel Hillers. Raliegh continues. WKNC ain't all metal, but it's still more metal than XYC or XDU. I'm trying to be objective here folks; I love Durham, live in Durham, and wouldn't live anywhere else, and am a cranky old XDU'er. I've spent a lot of time in other music scenes. But the Greater Chapel Hill music scene is the best- open minded, accessible, supportive and full of interesting characters who've experienced every part of the music industry. Music geek heaven, I tell you.

bendy (bendy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with what Bendy said, and I live in Carrboro but grew up in Durham. There's plenty of great stuff about Durham, but if you want to be able to walk/bike to shows, Chapel Hill/Carrboro is tops for that convenience.

Stingy (stingy), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Does Ross Grady still like to think that he rules the area with an iron fist?

I came up for the Merge 15th and it did seem very gracious and inviting, much more so than lots of other über-hip meccas I've visited.

Will (will), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

The only bad thing about Franklin st. for OOT visitors is that the only internet cafe is the (by proxy way overpriced) Kinko's up the street. But waaah waaah.

The bus system in the triangle is good, cheap, and is improving. The RTP bus layover thing can be annoying going between the airport and Chapel Hill, as the people in the lobby don't always know when the buses come and go, although they're really nice. you have to go outside and run around the bays like crazy to ensure catching the right one (having almost missed my flight back on the way to the airport because of RTP confusion..), but that lobby is awesome because everyone will talk to you there about almost anything.

DOQQUN (donut), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

Also Lime and Basil is great too... veggie options espeically.. their tomato/tofu dish. mmm.

right now Ringside has an awesome sign on its window calling out the city for the tortoise-slow pace of construction downtown, which has completely fucked local businesses

DOQQUN (donut), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:05 (nineteen years ago)

I wonder how long before Chapel Hilll becomes one of those cities with free wifi. It's bound to happen sooner or later.

This thread is making me really excited about my next trip home. There's nothing I love more than my anual walking down Franklin/Rosemary St and splurging at CD Alley.

Chas's Bull City, the place next to Cosmic, is still goin strong! Also Nice Price Books in Durham has a great vinyl selection, I mean like "nobody seems to know about it" great.

Durham is so completely awesome btw I love it so much and there are so many new good things since this thread - Chubby's Tacos, I don't think we ever got around to Locopops, Watts Grocery, Piedmont, on and on. Yes these are all food-related but since all I ever do is eat that's to be expected.
