I'm convinced that hype is purely a social experiment now.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:15 (nineteen years ago)

The only song I've heard is this free one on NPR, and I'm not really feeling it.

like murderinging (modestmickey), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

there's a clip of "postcard from italy" at the other music homepage.
i think it's remarkable music for such a young chap and the NMH echo is welcome in my book.

ed horrox (girl_afraid), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

it's a great record!

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 9 May 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

"postcard from italy" is wonderful. have yet to hear anything else.

Jimmy_tango, Wednesday, 10 May 2006 01:00 (nineteen years ago)

Thing I heard was like a bad version of the last song on Amnesiac, and I can't stand the last song on Amnesiac.

Why is it that every "hip" band of the last few years has a lead singer that either sings like: Ian Curtis, Thom Yorke or David Byrne?

tronildfkldlk, Wednesday, 10 May 2006 02:12 (nineteen years ago)

I've grabbed a few tracks off the blogosphere. I was pretty impressed. Convinced me to order the album (it was only $10, that helped).

Mr. Silverback (Mr. Silverback), Wednesday, 10 May 2006 05:52 (nineteen years ago)

I bought it solely after hearing "the canals of our city" + "mount wroclai (idle days)" ... plus, it was only $10 ... digging it so far...

i'm sure the pitchforking is imminent.

brokenfuses (brokenfuses), Thursday, 11 May 2006 02:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, it came in the mail a few days ago, I'm liking it a whole lot so far.

Maciej Kasperowicz (Maciej), Thursday, 11 May 2006 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

I like a couple of tracks, esp. "mount wroclai (idle days)" but it's too samey for my ears. Nothing from it sticks in a major way to my internal jukebox. Not baad though.

boney (b0n3y), Thursday, 11 May 2006 07:50 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I just got it in the mail, too. It is nice enough, and I'm happy with it but I don't think I can recommend it to everybody, as most of the album is not exactly catchy. I second what boney posted above.
I'm pretty sure tronildfkldlk is thinking of something else because I don't think Beirut's singer sounds like any of those folks. In fact, what band is he talking about whose singer sounds like david byrne, because that sounds worth a try.

Glading the Wanderer, Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

give it a listen here.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Thursday, 11 May 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

ouch.

post-sufjan, post- credibility....

gekoppel (Gekoppel), Monday, 15 May 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

I downloaded a few tracks. Enjoyable, but I was expecting something more unexpected and impressive.

Steve Goldberg (Steve Goldberg), Monday, 15 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Same. Liked, but wasn't really for me. Couple strong tracks-- "Postcards", and the last track esp-- but it's a bit fragile and overemotive. He's got this too-sensitive/introspective thing happening, and those precious Andrew Bird/Patrick Wolf kinda vocals I can never get into.

Ryan Pitchfork (Ryan Pitchfork), Monday, 15 May 2006 20:15 (nineteen years ago)

too much heart in his throat, i guess. (fragile + overemotive + glad = excellent!)

sean gramophone (Sean M), Monday, 15 May 2006 20:51 (nineteen years ago)

Trying to think of a singer this actually applies to based on my own tastes, and I'm drawing a blank. Guy from Fugazi maybe? He's a little too brutish, though.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 15 May 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

just picked it up... I'm mostly digging the drums, esp. on "Gulag Orkestar" (the song). The rest is good, but it sounds more like the first album for a guy who's got more interesting stuff in him.

max (maxreax), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know which Andrew Bird albums you're listening to, but...

(what I am trying to say here is that "precious" is probably the last word that comes to mind to describe Andrew Bird's vocals. I mean, he's not Joanna-fucking-Newsom or something)

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

(oh and also that I don't really think Beirut-dude's voice sounds anything like Bird's)

bernard snow (sixteen sergeants), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 15:43 (nineteen years ago)

those precious Andrew Bird vocals

Yeah, I don't see it. I love Bird's vocals, but he seems a lot more committed than Beirut does; the whole thing just sounds a little two-dimensional, and like he's singing from a distance. It lacks the sense of immediacy I get from people like Bird, Colin Meloy, and Jeff Mangum.

Steve Goldberg (Steve Goldberg), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

seven months pass...
I just heard it thinking it was something completely different. I loved it. Now I find that it's Beirut I'm somewhat underwhelmed. It came up on my walkman and I was all "What is this amazing funeral-brass with world-y rhythms?" I genuinely thought it was some sort of under represented Cuban maverick or something.

wogan lenin (dog latin), Sunday, 21 January 2007 16:45 (nineteen years ago)

someone on emusic said this and i have to agree: devotchka is better. way better.

Emily Bjurnhjam (Emily Bjurnhjam), Sunday, 21 January 2007 16:59 (nineteen years ago)

It's pretty, and more of those NMH brass arrangements are worth the price of the CD, I bought it without having heard anything about it (liked the cover) and it sounded fresher than it should to me. They have a high school charm live too, but when I saw them they had the daft idea to let a Hawk and A Hacksaw kick the shit out of them beforehand. And then Calexico came on... that bill woulda been a lot better in reverse.

from The ends of your fingers (prosper.strummer.), Sunday, 21 January 2007 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

we played at this art space in st. croix falls WI on friday nite, the guy was playing the cd before we went on...seemed kinda cool.

M@tt He1g3s0n: oh u mad cuz im stylin on u (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 21 January 2007 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

devotchka is better sure but it's still a terrific record. don't understand the comparisons to radiohead above, is there another Beirut? it's certainly much better than Andrew Bird.

keyth (keyth), Sunday, 21 January 2007 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

i just imagine fucking tousled hair and a scarf blowing in the wind when this guy opens his mouth

millenarian (millenarian), Sunday, 21 January 2007 22:15 (nineteen years ago)

it's certainly much better than Andrew Bird.

Have you ever seen Andrew Bird live?

Steve Go1dberg (Steve Schneeberg), Sunday, 21 January 2007 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

eight months pass...

Yes, he is a total prick live.

I know, right?, Friday, 28 September 2007 10:53 (eighteen years ago)

nine months pass...

J0rdan S., Saturday, 12 July 2008 03:27 (seventeen years ago)

three years pass...

I wonder if they ever tracked down the source of the cover photograph?

djh, Tuesday, 6 March 2012 17:49 (fourteen years ago)

Quite like The Rip Tide (Truck Records' album of the year, apparently).
