Busta Rhymes' "Pass the Courvosier" video's got pinky toes getting stomped in back alleys, dry humping under a pool table, P Diddy giving pubic shaving advice, Jaime Foxx doing a buttdance, lotsa mad fu, lotsa geishas, the biggest cocktail glass ever, and Mr T breaking down walls. Wot beats it?

The Beastie Boys wearing false moustaches and jumping over cars.

that new cee-lo is pretty bangin'

"The Humpty Dance" and/or "Dowhatchyalike" by Digital Underground

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Busta's great for this stuff - see "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Could See", "What's It Gonna Be?" etc.

I've still got a soft-spot for the golden age of Hype Williams - those early Missy videos particularly. Although (and it's not hip hop I know) the video for Tweet's "Oops Oh My" is marvelous, primarily for stealing my idea - melting ice maidens - before I even had it. Is it Hype?

Tim, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh my god I can't believe I forgot "Gimme Some Mo".

Tim, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OF COURSE! How could I forget Busta?!? He positively buries Digital Underground in the great video department. "Woo-Hah" and "Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See" (borrowing wholesale from Eddie Murphy's "Coming to America") are brilliant, and I cannot watch "Break Yo Neck" without laughing completely out loud. Bless'im. He truly honors the fire.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am sentimental so quite like Eve's "Love is Blind" and Outkast's "Mrs.Jackson" for NOT using girls in bikinis for once plus that wide smile at the end when the rain stops is SO beautiful. I really like the New Orleans funeral parade in that Mystikal one too. Oh and the Beastie Boys one where they're in primary colour pj suits.

Evangeline, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no really, the new cee-lo is phat

chaki, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"pass the courvoisier": strangely, i was actually drinking the stuff straight out of the bottle when the video came on, which was creepy.

also most hype williams fisheye stuff=roXor, & any beastie boys video where spike jonze was involved

and the vid for outkast's "the whole world" is very effective

geeta, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best is clearly the Biggie video with the kids (Sky's the limit).

Miranda, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Cee-Lo video reminds me of that Robert Palmer video -- you know. The one WITHOUT the mannequin girls.

The Chronic series of videos right when gangsta broke are amazing slice-of-life portraits that, in spite of the persistance of the blurry bits, have aged more gracefully than the genre itself.

Bombs Over Bahgdad is great for the soul train and the gospel choir -- in the same shot.

JM, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

clearly, ghostface killah's "apollo kids." the apex of the hiphop ego video form. he owns a shoe factory, raps with ice cream cone in hand, and poses with title belt in front of pyrotechnics and giant stalinesque portrait of himself.

#_,, Saturday, 16 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the Mos Def "B-Boy Document" video is really great, really bad-ass, and really funny.

And as much as I blame Hype Williams for suffocating us all with the wide-angle neon spaceship thing, "The Rain" is so good.

freakwincey - i farted, on rephlex. but if thats hip hop.....

ambrose, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

shoot I just remembered that my buddy pointed me at this Kutmaster Kurt/Kool Keith video on the computer, which is entertaining. Prob. not the best EVAH though:

Ron, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Cherche La Ghost" is extremely classic as well, if only because the song itself is so bugged out.

Busta and Outkast kind of own everyone when it comes to videos, don't they? Remember "Dangerous"? "B.O.B"? (Also, I've got to agree with that Cee-Lo pick... CLASSIC.)

Dan Perry, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Amongst others, I gotta second the "The Whole World" vid. Only caught it once, but I was impressed.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ol' Dirty Bastard - "Baby I Got YOur Money." He didn't show up for the video shoot, so they had to (poorly) digitally superimpose his face (rapping to another song) over Dolemite characters.

Gavin M, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

eight months pass...
best hip-hop video ever is: 2Pac - Holler If You Hear Me

Vince, Saturday, 14 December 2002 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
I just saw Ol' Dirty Bastard - Brooklyn Zoo and that video is great. Nothing very unusual about it other than the weird gold thing ODB is wearing over his teeth. It's just great because it's ODB.

Laszlo Kovacs (Laszlo Kovacs), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Get Ur Freak On" is pretty great. I like my hip-hop videos totally unhinged.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Wu-Tang Clan's video for "I Can't Go To Sleep" (one of the best rap songs ever anyway, btw), which, in its very literal interpretation of the song's theme, features all of the Wu Tang members in a slumber party in matching Wu pajamas, and guest singer Isaac Hayes as a phantom that appears in the night wearing a hood and robe.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Monday, 23 August 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I HAVE to see that.

Yeah, seriously. Link please.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 23 August 2004 17:46 (twenty-one years ago)

It's still Missy, Busta and Outkast.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The video for "What's Up, Fatlip?" is awesome, but also kinda sad.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit, and that reminds me, THAT PHARCYDE VIDEO WHERE EVERYTHING GOES FORWARDY BACKWARDS.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, sorry I don't have a link I downloaded it from Slsk.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Monday, 23 August 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The fact that "Put 'Em On The Glass" hasn't been mentioned makes me sad.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Monday, 23 August 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the "Salt Shaker" video cuz it reminds me of an Ohio Players album cover (as I've said before) and also one of my film friends met the director.

Scarface's "My Block" is a wonderful video.

Little X makes some of the best videos I've ever seen - his use of color is amazing (See: Wayne Wonder - No Letting Go)

mucho, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw Wu-Tang's "Triumph" for first time in years, and damn it was good! The 1997 special effects look all cheesy now, but there's some amazingly quirky and eerie moments in that video: Inspectah Deck walking a building wall like Spider-Man, RZA going through prison isles with fuckin' WINGS on his back, and Masta Killa and GZA watching planet Earth from the space like some all-seeing aliens (which fits perfectly with Masta Killa's verse there).

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

clearly, ghostface killah's "apollo kids." the apex of the hiphop ego video form. he owns a shoe factory, raps with ice cream cone in hand, and poses with title belt in front of pyrotechnics and giant stalinesque portrait of himself.

That sounds great (especially the ice cream cone), but what is it with Ghost and shoes? Am I missing something? I don’t understand all the shoes and test tubes on the coverman of Ironman either.

"gin and juice"--just because snoop wears a pittsburgh penguin sweater in it
OTM!

Also, don't forget "Fight the Power"'s political rally! It was an absolute mindblower in its day.

nickalicious, that's 'Drop', and it's boffo
