When Did Morrissey Look Best?

Curiously, my answer would be: the immediate post-Smiths period - say, 1988 to 1991.

Perhaps you could post pictures to support your views.

the bellefox (the pinefox), Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:45 (nineteen years ago)

Now.

He looks now like he should be the age he is.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:52 (nineteen years ago)

While he's aged surprisingly well, I like the very young Morrissey, followed by the "Your Arsenal" gold lame shirt period.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:16 (nineteen years ago)

I prefer the flower-in-pocket era of Morrisey ('82-'84), when he resembled Robert Forster...

hank (hank s), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure about that necklace.

the pinefox (the pinefox), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:52 (nineteen years ago)

I think either now or around the time of You Are The Quarry. Not sure if there's much difference. I saw him doing Every Day Is Like Sunday on TOTP on that NME programme and he had the silliest quiff in history, as tall as a tree.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

Soerry, I meant to say Acorn Antiques The Musical.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

When Did Morrissey Look Best?

When he made O-face.

Doktor Faustus (noodle vague), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

Specifically Act One. Can't find picture, sorry. But long hair and beard.

PJM - I don't get it.

I think I thought he looked good, singing 'Sunday'!

the bellefox (the pinefox), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a point to this thread?

this is crazy or deluded. Morrissey looks awful now, much older than he is.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 11 May 2006 15:07 (nineteen years ago)

I'm not sure about that necklace.

I actually think that was one of his best ever touches!

are you kidding? this is a good picture:

he looks great here. too fey for my taste in those early days. too romantic. like the fifties look and when he wears suits.

ed slanders (edslanders), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, he looks better than he sounds now - he's filled out a bit, looks more rugged, his face has more character, he looks like he could fit onto one of his old band's sleeves actually.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 11 May 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

I never really liked him when I was younger. I saw him in person once last year. He's beautiful despite his enormous head.

He looks really good now. Silver fox.

weird, I was just thinking about this sort of this morning before I saw the thread. I was just watching an old Smiths concert video, & I'm with hank. He gets more annoying (looking, sounding, attitude, etc) every year, so the early years are certainly the best.

dave's good arm (facsimile) (dave225.3), Thursday, 11 May 2006 17:51 (nineteen years ago)

No, the 1984 M. doesn't quite do it for me. Too eccentric, too much just emerged from bedroom solitude. I really think it's around Viva Hate, Bona Drag that he peaks. (Think of that NME front cover feature when they published a load of lists of his favourite stuff - late 1989, was that? He looked good, looking down at George Formby on a grave or something.) So on this thread I am closest to Mary, though I don't like the particular picture she has posted.

the pinefox (the pinefox), Thursday, 11 May 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

May 21 1959.

Ho ho.

My actual answer is:

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 11 May 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Mary's correct. He looked hottest between 1990-1994. Yum.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 11 May 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, this is the image which changed my life, in many ways - from the back cover of Smash Hits, December 84.

like i said, i like the way he looks now, he really needed to put some weight on. looks really classy and masculine.

ed slanders (edslanders), Thursday, 11 May 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

he looks gorgeous now. healthy-looking and well put together.

i agree! he doesn't actually look like that, though.

I don't think he looks so good nowadays, He's turning slowly into Alf Roberts

Bidfurd (Bidfurd), Thursday, 11 May 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

PF, I was making a little joke about Neil Morrissey in Acorn Antiques The Musical, where he appears as a radical theatre director in cahrge of a troupe of frumps.

Trust me, it's well funny.

On his recent DVD, Morrissey looks best doing Don't Make Fun Of Daddy's Voice when he kind of karate chops at his own throat.

He does kind of look as if he goes to the gym now.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 12 May 2006 07:25 (nineteen years ago)

Early 90s/30s I'd say.

Love that Weller shot too.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 12 May 2006 15:18 (nineteen years ago)

That's Maladjusted era, a bit greasy for my taste.

Best period was post quirky lanky Smiths, post early solo matinee wantabe. Also: all those great pics taken in L.A. which I've posted numerous times (in the pool eating grapes/getting the paper in a bathrobe and mocs, etc.)

Mary (Mary), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:20 (nineteen years ago)

"Matinee wantabe?" Was it that Japanese for?

ed slanders (edslanders), Friday, 12 May 2006 21:53 (nineteen years ago)

Er, I was trying to say "matinee (idol) wannabe."

New tux look:

Mary (Mary), Friday, 12 May 2006 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

he is starting to look like my grandfather actually. or rather what my grandfather did look like. he just needs to go white up top.

Kim (Kim), Friday, 12 May 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

Lucky granddaughter.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 12 May 2006 23:22 (nineteen years ago)

people who never change their image always age badly.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 12 May 2006 23:26 (nineteen years ago)

On the latest cover he's actually started to remind me of Anthony Stewart Head from around season 4 or 5 of Buffy.

His Saturday Night Live appearance (Michael Keaton host) was the best he ever looked. The graceful art with which he flipped the microphone cable was one of the five greatest things a human being has ever done. Mona Lisa, Lolita, Guernica, etc.

O-Keigh (O-Keigh), Friday, 12 May 2006 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

I've been struck recently by how quintessentially Irish he has started to look (hardly surprising, given that his parents were from the ould sod). On the cover of ... You Are the Quarry, he bears such a strong resemblance to my girlfriend's father that the tommy-gun gave me a fright.

Palomino (Palomino), Saturday, 13 May 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

Does your girlfriend's dad normally threaten you in a fancy suit and tommy gun?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 13 May 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

I suspect that he may do exactly that quite soon, if I don't make an honest woman of her.

Palomino (Palomino), Saturday, 13 May 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

"His Saturday Night Live appearance (Michael Keaton host) was the best he ever looked."

That's one of my favourite Morrissey moments ever. When they played "Glamorous Glue", both he and the band were so full of swagger, it was unreal.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Saturday, 13 May 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

He looked his best in the Suedehead video.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Saturday, 13 May 2006 22:55 (nineteen years ago)

Personally, I like the way he looks best now. The "seasoned" attributes give him more character...and no I'm not gay.

astronautagogo (astronautagogo), Monday, 15 May 2006 01:36 (nineteen years ago)

you're not gay? well then pfff..

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Monday, 15 May 2006 01:48 (nineteen years ago)

I agree with those who say the post-Smiths, first stage of solo career period (ie that covered by Bona Drag). Looked best, sounded best, recorded some of his best songs, produced his best sleeves/vides/artwork & gave the best interviews.
