But was dismissed as a "just a worn-out drug addict" by NME.

Theres also a poll on the BBC site Here For

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 11:59 (nineteen years ago)

he magazine, which only two years ago named Doherty as its "cool icon", expressed surprise at his inclusion.

It said: "Surely he's just a worn-out drug addict who needs help if he's ever going to make decent music again?"

"Yes, there was a time when Pete Doherty lived his life with an unrivalled romantic zest, when he represented a truly anti-establishment voice," it said in the latest issue.
"But is he really still your hero? Now that his second home seems to be the courtroom?"

In 2004, when the magazine named Doherty as their "cool icon", it said his talent as a musician, not his heroin addiction which made him "the coolest".

NME'S ROCK HEROES
1. Kurt Cobain
2. Pete Doherty
3. Morrissey
4. Liam Gallagher
5. Carl Barat
6. Thom Yorke
7. Noel Gallagher
8. David Bowie
9. Ian Brown
10. Ian Curtis

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:02 (nineteen years ago)

So, who's your hero? Pick One Only!

plenty talk about it, here.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:04 (nineteen years ago)

Ahh ok. Didn't see that.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:05 (nineteen years ago)

That only two thousand people voted is pretty damning, isn't it?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:08 (nineteen years ago)

What is NME's circulation these days? Maybe they're dumping Doherty as the circulation is going down as people get fed up with their blanket coverage of him leaving only diehard doherty fans buying nme?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:10 (nineteen years ago)

This entire board has been locked by a cunt.

Doktor Faustus (noodle vague), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:12 (nineteen years ago)

The NME probably change their coverage of bands every october with the influx of freshers.

Bands that have been around for 3 years get dumped unceremoniously as those bands fans graduate and don't buy NME/Shite indie anymore.

WHY THE FUCK DOES ANYBODY ON ILM GIVE THE SLIGHTEST FUCKING SHIT ABOUT ANY OF THIS FOR FUCKING CHRIST'S SAKE?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:23 (nineteen years ago)

Because Melody Maker and Sounds magazine no longer exist and the NME b-shit weekly view of music is published with no opposition.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:27 (nineteen years ago)

EVEN NOW THE NME's BLACK-SHIRTED HORDES STOMP ACROSS THE LAND MAKING INNOCENT CIVILIANS LISTEN TO SHABBYMUMBLES

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:46 (nineteen years ago)

The successful candidate will have an eye for news both online and offline and an endless stream of fresh ideas. You'll be unfazed at the prospect of interviewing the likes of Liam Gallagher and Alex Turner, but will also have the stamina to stand outside a police station all night, waiting for Pete Doherty to be let out.

Who is Alex Turner?

I might apply. Nothing to lose, is there?

I can identify Paul McCartney's daughter Heather in the Say Say Say video.

Doktor Faustus (noodle vague), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:50 (nineteen years ago)

IIRC Alex Turner is one of the arctic monkeys. Or perhaps it should have said nik turner, we can all live in hope, I dunno.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 11 May 2006 12:59 (nineteen years ago)

You know Ive followed music pretty closely for a pretty long time and I honestly can't say I've heard any of Pete Doherty's music or know even which band he is or was in.

Period period period (Period period period), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

You and Stephen Merritt should hang out.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

Doktor Faustus (noodle vague), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:02 (nineteen years ago)

I waqtched a rockumentary about him, which you can now get on DVD by the way incidentally.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:07 (nineteen years ago)

He'll play round your house for less than the price of a DVD.

Doktor Faustus (noodle vague), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

(hilariously cross out "a DVD" and replace with name of drug)

ha, my friend anna-marie forwarded this link to some of us this morning, and my reaction was also "who the fuck is alex turner?"

i'm so, so proud of the fact that i've still not heard an arctic monkeys song. worst band ever, seriously.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:30 (nineteen years ago)

i'm so, so proud of the fact that i've still not heard an arctic monkeys song. worst band ever, seriously.

Im not defending them in any way, but if you've never heard them how can you say they're the worst band ever?
(and did you have comic book guy voice in your heard when you wrote that?)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

If you haven't heard them, how do you know?

You don't need to catch Ebola to know it sucks.

Doktor Faustus (noodle vague), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

ha ha ha.

I note the lack of outraged doherty fans googling in on ilm, generally. Also arctic monkeys, there were a few, but not that many, considering.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 11 May 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

The Lex

Period period period (Period period period), Thursday, 11 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

When it comes to living up to the rock'n'roll myth, he is better than most, I guess.

Not that he is important in any way though, even though his two albums with The Libertines were decent enough.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 11 May 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

Geir, Dre's albums with the Libertines were shit.

Get with it.

Doktor Faustus (noodle vague), Thursday, 11 May 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

Forget about Dre?

mark grout (mark grout), Friday, 12 May 2006 06:07 (nineteen years ago)

I have decided not to apply for that job after all.

Konal, you forgot PAUL MORLEY, surely number one?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 12 May 2006 07:20 (nineteen years ago)

I note the lack of outraged doherty fans googling in on ilm, generally. Also arctic monkeys, there were a few, but not that many, considering.

Esp. since the Libertines were supposedly the band that pioneered usage of message boards etc.

I wish some would show up.

Raw Patrick (Raw Patrick), Friday, 12 May 2006 09:00 (nineteen years ago)

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 12 May 2006 10:44 (nineteen years ago)

uk pop types polls are more AUTHENTIC?

acrobat (elwisty), Friday, 12 May 2006 10:46 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know if this is relevant.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

Enabler.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

Was it good, Konal?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

it was alright. an instrumental version would probably have been better though. then it could totally have passed for Mancunian punkfunk circa '82.
