TS: Cheesy dance remixes vs. cheesy punk covers

...and give a favorite example of your choice.

I was listening to KTU this morning (NYC dance station) and heard a dance remix of "Behind These Hazel Eyes." It was OK, but nowhere near as good as I would have expected it to be before I heard it. Whereas there's this punk cover of "I Want it That Way" I've been listening to for like 6 months now and I still love it. (No idea who the artist is--it just says "Punk covers!" for the artist, which is awesome.)

So, punk covers for me. I know this is probably due to my irredeemably indie soul, but I just like the idea of taking a good song and making it faster and louder.

Jacques Lu Cont is quite good at polishing turds.

I suppose Ladytron's cover of Tweet is a good punk cover, but I was happy enough with the original.

I feel like JLC might be cheating a bit--I'm thinking more of the almost generic doof-doof, Jason Nevins-style dance remixes. The ones that are like basically the song with a house beat and maybe some synths thrown behind in, and anything else is gravy.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

cheating?

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

He's an actually respectable artist, whereas most punk covers are done by no-name bands in a similar style. I was more interested in the pleasures of the generic. But hey, whatever folks want to talk about...

My fave 'punk' covers:

Futureheads - 'Hounds of Love'
Gigolo Aunts - 'Ask' (Smiths cover - surprisingly very good)

Robin Goad (rgoad), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

I don't see how Konal is cheating either. 'Dance' is a broad church these days and let's not confuse cheese for dance.

So I'm on the side of dance remixes - I don't think there's enough punk covers that make up for the sheer number of brilliant dance music remixes of rock stuff. In fact this has been some of my favorite music over the last few years. Some examples...

Bloc Party - So Here We Are (Four Tet Remix)
The Kills - The Good Ones (Kieran Hebden club edit)
Test Icicles - What's Your Damage? (Braxe/Falke full length)
Blues Explosion - Mars, Arizona (DFA Mix)
Interpol - Length of Love (Fog vs. Mould Remix)
Postal Service - District Sleeps Alone Tonight (DJ Downfall Mix)
Rachel Goswell - Coastline (Ulrich Schnauss voval mix)
The Killers - Mr Brightside (Thin White Duke remix)

Having said that, honory mention for Vitaminsforyou's cover of The Arcade Fire's No Cars Go.

Treblekicker (treblekicker), Friday, 12 May 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

Both sides are littered with shit, but I think the the dance remixes on the whole are more inventive. Plus I'm a sucker for anything that bleeps and clicks.

Test Icicles - What's Your Damage? (Braxe/Falke full length)

this has been in my head all day! it's not even THAT great - it sounds like Planet Funk.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:08 (nineteen years ago)

We have lots of threads for talking about remixes, though--I was more interested in talking about cheese, I guess. I'll ask for a thread title change.

Eppy (Eppy), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

so wait, is the original poster discussing dance remixes of top 40 stuff vs punk covers of top 40 stuff?

or discussing dance remixes in general vs punk covers in general?

cos in the first case i might find an argument for both sides (though ultimately going with dance remixes), but in the second there's simply _no_ contest!!

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:11 (nineteen years ago)

Oh don't bother, eppy. I never hear high street nightclub handbag remixes of pop tracks much these days. I think every Girls Aloud single has a boshing 4/4 mix included but they're usually sped up and diluted and never the greatness they could be. They're missing a trick by not getting more credible remixers for pop acts like GA perhaps.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:13 (nineteen years ago)

Ah yes, that's a better way of putting it: covers/remixes of top 40 songs.

My fave 'punk' covers:

Futureheads - 'Hounds of Love'

Theres a dance remix of this song (by the futureheads) that's also really good. I guess this one transcends both categories.

Thomas Mehlt (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Friday, 12 May 2006 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

I used to link the punk covers, but stuff like the cover of "Total eclipse of the heart" that came out like ten years ago by, I think, Nicki French and Dj Sammy covering Brian Adams are more my style nowadays.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Friday, 12 May 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

The Remixland and Replay Dance Mania compilation series are good for the boshin dance stuff.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 12 May 2006 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

dance remixes, because the phrase "cheesy punk covers" reminds me of the (continued?) existence of me first and the gimme gimmes.

spastic heritage (spastic heritage), Friday, 12 May 2006 16:20 (nineteen years ago)

What about cheesy dance covers of classic punk and hardcore songs? Eh? What about them?

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 12 May 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

TOO THINKY

One of the best actualized ideas that could've easily fallen into the "good in theory" category. I love that album Drew. I play "Homo-sexual" in the car loud enough to make my ears bleed, and love the little high-pitched sped up "homosexual" voices like my mother.

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

Cheers!

On the other hand, I really wanted to dig that Nouvelle Vague CD and it gave me the creeps. A sign I'm getting old, surely . . .

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:15 (nineteen years ago)

oh man i just got a really bad feeling that you may not have been referencing your own record and instead talking about the nouvelle vague record after all and that maybe my compliment came off as backhanded (inferring that your stuff was "cheesy")

UR NOT CHEESY DRW WE LUV U!

rentboy (rentboy), Friday, 12 May 2006 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

oh no worries, I know that SPT involves a cheese factor, absolutely . . .
