Who spelled his name with a hy-phen?

Years ago, I heard a song on a local student radio in Norway with this line in the chorus that really stuck: "He spelled his name with a hyphen". I seem to recall it sounded like some kind of late 60s somewhat psychedelic guitar band or something, but for all I know it could of course be something completely different. I've asked some seemingly knowledgeable people about what this might be over the years, but not got any useful replies... Does anybody know? And is it any good, or have the catchiness of that line fooled me ever since?

Edward Ka-Spel of the Legendary Pink Dots spells his name with a hy- phen, and they play 60s-ish psychedelia influenced stuff, though through a thick layer of electronics.

Um, but they don't actually mention the hyphen in song, do they? Will be happy to check out LPDs, though, if anyone thinks it's worth it. Always wondered what they were like when I've seen their records (often in quite unexpected places), but never plunged.

They're great, but they have about eight million albums. Try Canta Mientras Puedas for a good sampler of the first half of the nineties.

Geneis P_Orridge (well, that's more of an underscore than a hyphen, really).

Er... did anyone actually read the question?

OleM (OleM), Thursday, 28 April 2005 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

haha. this is actually supposed to be a track-id on the song with the chorus containing the line "he spelled his name with a hyphen" then? the thread title is misleading i think.

Lyrics: Paragon-Smythe was a good little man
He had a name with a hyphen
Went to a party and drank from a can
He had the time of his life when
He started dancing and slapping his shins
Playing with lampshades and counting his chins
Paragon-Smythe was a good little man but he'll never drink Fanta again

On his way home he was watching the sky
Missed out on several earthquakes
Found a pavilion and thought he would try
To see how easily leg breaks
He started wheezing and gasping for air
Wearing pyjamas and combing his hair
Paragon-Smythe was a good little man
But he'll never play cricket again

That's about as good as I could do with Google. It does say it's psychedelic! (http://www.mp3.com.au/track.asp?id=35681)
