I have a AIWA CX-ZL10 Compact disc Stereo System with Record Player. I am having trouble playing burnt cds. Sometimes Sony will work butr not often and Memorex will never work. What brand of CDR's work with this system?

Sony's give me a lot of problems. Probably some kind of Sony CDR self-destruct system to prevent people from copying their CDs onto CDRs. I haven't tried that many brands, but Maxells work pretty well for my purposes.

I've never had problems with Memorex cdr's (I always hated their cassettes, though). But I'd second the Maxell recommendation. That's usually my #2 choice.

CDRs are manufactured by three(or so) companies. Sony, Memorex, Fuji, AIWA, etc. all get their media private labeled by at one (or more) of these manufacturers. One spindle of CDRs may have discs from different production runs or even different companies.

Taiyo Yuden is one of these manufacturers and also the only brand i'll buy.

I bought a 100 spool of Mitsui silver and they're the best cd-r's I've used. They tend to play everywhere and have fewer burn problems. I think a spool of Fuji's broke my burner. Or maybe it was just old.

My CD-R of choice for years has been the TDK "music CD-R".. they're all white, w/ light silver text/lines

Never had any problems with any of my Plextors

I really want to see what the consensus is on this issue in about ten years...

In 10 years, we'll be using CD-R's as sunlight reflectors, to signal for an ambush on the band of nomads passing through our turf, in search of overturned SUV's with a few drops of gas left in the tank...

OTM

(10 years after that, though, we'll be using them to decorate the outer walls of the glittering cities our space-alien benefactors will be constructing for us. Music via telepathy will be just one of their many gifts, so CD's won't be needed. A happy ending!)

I bought a stand-alone DVD burner by Phillips a few years back. I tried all sorts of brands to work in this thing and nothing was working. I called Phillips to see if it was a problem with my machine or where I can find blank Phillips CDR’s. They told me to try Sony’s if you can’t find any Phillips CD’s and what do you know they are the only one’s that do work in my machine. I should have taken it back but never did but only use Sony’s CDR and it even says, "This disc conforms to standards of the Orange Book Part 2." I still have no idea what the hell that means but I think it has something to do with working in my CD burner.

Orange Book is a standard defined by Sony and Philips (1990) re writing techniques on magnetic optical drives (Part I) CD-WORM, CD-WO or CD-R (Part II). In Part II the construction of a Multisession CD was defined. Part III was included in 1995 and defines the rewritable CD, the CD-RW.

Orange Book Part II: CD - R Volume 1: 1x/2x/4x
The current version of: "Orange Book Part II: CD-R, Version 3.1", defining 1x, 2x and 4x recording speeds is renamed into: "Orange Book Part II: CD-R, Volume 1: 1x/2x/4x, Version 3.1".

Orange Book Part II: CD - R Volume 2: Multi Speed
This standard defines linear recording speeds up to 16 times nominal CD speed. With Orange Book, Part II: CD-R, Volume 2: Multi-Speed, a.o. a new spot for test write conditions and the Media IDentification is introduced.

In order to synchronise Orange Book, Part III: CD-RW, Volume 2: High-Speed it is planned to publish an update of this Part III volume 2, with the MID code and a test spot similar to CD-R Multi-Speed, with the introduction of the Orange Book, Part II: CD-R, Volume 2: Multi-Speed version 1

Orange Book Part III: CD - RW, Volume 2: High Speed
This standard defines linear recording speeds between 4x and 10x nominal CD speed, which includes the capability to use the disc at a Constant Angular recording Velocity of about 32 revolutions/second.

As opposed to Red Book standard (see below), which is probably why you have that compatibility issue.

Very interesting stuff, thanks sleeve!

I had a spindle of 100 HP CDRs, at least 1/3 of which, if not more, failed to burn properly. In addition, discs routinely took nearly 20 or 30 minutes to burn one audio disc.

I got some TDK discs from a friend, and have not coastered a single one since then (50 or 60+ discs), and the burning time has decreased dramatically.

That's interesting, V. I ended up with a lot of coasters using my G4's old built in drive, a Sony. Brand seemed irrelevant, it happened to everything. Since I switched to a LaCie DVD/CD drive I have had almost no problems and audio CDs burn in 2 minutes.

I have had one HP disc where the aluminum layer literally flaked off :(

Actually, I got mixed up. I think I might like Memorex best. At any rate, the only really name brand CDR I've had much problem with is Sony.

Taiyo Yuden.
