'People Let's Stop the War' vs 'Don't Let Them Take Your Guns'

Theoretically Discharge had better riffs.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

That Discharge album is still massive.
I thought that I was the only ILMer to mention it.
(As far as Crass, I prefer Penis Envy)

peepee (peepee), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:41 (nineteen years ago)

Discharge, easily. The Crass album is great in it's own way, not something I'd want to listen to very often though.

I got a recent remastered CD version of HNSNSN a while ago, it just blasts like fuck from start to finish.

Penis Envy & Feeding of the 5000 are my Crass picks. Then Christ The Album, Yes Sir I Will & Stations of the Crass in that order.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, the discharge album is still amazing after all these years. and great to listen to. yes sir, i will is more of an art-installment. it's better if you actually listen to it while watching the visuals that go along with it on christ the movie. otherwise, it's kind of a chore (a la flux's fucking pricks/fucking cunts double album). i love all the other crass albums though just to listen to. i've probably listened to stations of the crass, penis envy, and christ the album the most. which is to say, about a zillion times.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

and the singles comp, can't leave that out. what a glorious thing. i actually owned every crass single at one point. sold them years ago when i was poor :( even the christmas single!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 15 May 2006 13:58 (nineteen years ago)

I forgot the singles comp! Yeah that is great, I still haven't got round to buying it though. I don't actually own any Crass singles, although I have quite a few singles by other bands on Crass Records (Honey Bane, Flux, Conflict, Alternative, Anthrax, probably more I've forgotten)

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Monday, 15 May 2006 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

Is there a D-Beat thread? There should be. How fucking influential was that band??? punk, hardcore, grindcore, death metal. Discharge ruled so hard. Until they didn't. I love all those Japanese D-Beat bands.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 15 May 2006 15:36 (nineteen years ago)

Scott, 'splain me D-Beat, please

peepee (peepee), Monday, 15 May 2006 15:41 (nineteen years ago)

D-Beat is a genre named after the galloping Discharge drum beat. Mostly yer crusty punk and hardcore types who emulate Discharge.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 15 May 2006 15:49 (nineteen years ago)

wikipedia has a picture of the d-beat!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 15 May 2006 15:53 (nineteen years ago)

D beats Crass almost always.

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Monday, 15 May 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

I'm gonna be the only one so far to say I actually prefer the Crass album. I've certainly listened to it more. Discharge always seemed kinda generic to me (*covers head*).

sleeve (sleeve), Monday, 15 May 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

Discharge by a mile. Hugely influential and years ahead of their time.

Not that Crass weren't important, but . .

Soukesian, Monday, 15 May 2006 20:04 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

This is the only Discharge thread :(

So I got a ticket to see the UK Subs on Friday and Discharge is the support band! Now that's an unexpected bonus. Is Rat from the Varukers still singing for them? Has anyone seen them since they reunited? I haven't even listened to the album they put out a few years ago.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

Discharge is one of those bands I've never gotten around to. Is there some kind of semi-comprehensive anthology I can grab?

unperson, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

Everything decent they did is collected on 2 CD's, so just get one of them, and if you like it, get the other one. Those being:

Why (includes 1st 3 EPs + debut mini-album)
Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing (with some more singles tacked on)

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Does either one of those have "Free Speech for the Dumb"?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, the 2nd one.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

Rah

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

I just found some 2CD anthology (only 76 minutes of music, so could easily have fit on a single disc) called Free Speech For The Dumb. It has 40 songs, and from everything I've read they only ever wrote one, so this should do me.

unperson, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah looking at it that is basically the 2 CDs I mentioned above with the songs shuffled around a bit.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:19 (eighteen years ago)

Discharge, in this case.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

Discharge were a little disappointing, for a start it was nowhere near loud enough, and they stood dead still on stage apart from Rat who at least tried a bit. It was OK but considering it was fucking Discharge and all, just seemed a bit limp.

UK Subs were fucking amazing though, so it's not just because they're old.

Colonel Poo, Saturday, 8 December 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

I have to say thank you to this thread. I'd heard of Discharge before but (being prejudicial old me) I saw their photos and saw the hair and the leather and flinched at the mental visions of Rancid that conjured up.

But I've finally heard 'Hear Nothing See Nothing Say Nothing' for the first time, and it's bloody fucking amazing. Startlingly so, in a 'how can I have never heard this before?' way. So thanks again.

MacDara, Saturday, 8 December 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

three months pass...

Spending today shuffling through all the EPs and singles through "The More I See," and HNSNSN. Still have yet to listen to Crass.

unperson, Sunday, 6 April 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

I listened to "Hear Nothing..." for the first time a couple of months ago. Also had the "can't believe I never bothered to listen to these guys" thing. It's fucking great.

I think the punk/metal tag kinda discouraged me from checking them out when I was a kid. For whatever reason, metal held a certain stigma for me during those finicky teenage years.

circa1916, Monday, 7 April 2008 07:07 (seventeen years ago)

"the more I see" is one of the funniest records I've ever heard.

I got that GBH boxed set (all their Clay albums) in the mail last year, and saw them in 1990 in the middle of a bill - beneath the Ramones and after Warzone.

unperson, Monday, 7 April 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

Lovely Youtubes there am0n.

Not sure about "even though the weapons will never be used they still kill people" though

bidfurd, Monday, 7 April 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)

three months pass...

Been listening to Discharge again.
Relentlessly depressing but fucking ace. Locked in doom.
Their time is coming. Again.Great!!!
Discharge should reform because not only have we got a nuclear worry with all those out of control waste dumps in many places, we are allegedly , running out of gas, food and all that shit!!!!

Discharge need to reform and start shouting about other stuff now - if they have any chance of saving the worlD

I saw Broken Bones supporting Bad Brains once. Good gig ,but thatch persevered

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:00 (seventeen years ago)

Fer Ark needs to wake up cos Discharge have been reformed for a few years now (albeit with Rat from the Varukers on vocals instead of Cal) and in fact have a new album out in August!

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:03 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry poo- knew i'd fuck up
can always trust on you

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)

Is the new album disgusted about us humans?

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

Bob Mould

Would love to know . Those faux metal lead breaks in earliesh Du? Discharge?

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:08 (seventeen years ago)

Haven't heard the new one, or indeed the album they put out when they first reformed in 2002. They were a little underwhelming when I saw them last year. Could see them next weekend except they're on at the same time as Cockney Rejects so I'll probably go and watch them instead.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

Freedom! There aint no Fuckin freedom.
RIOT!!!

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

Well, quite.

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:13 (seventeen years ago)

I wonder if the Cockney Rejects are still a bunch of double hard bastards or are now fat old men (or both).

Colonel Poo, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

West Ham are the only London club worth supporting. That's an easy one
War On The Terraces.

But we don't haver them anymore.

Health and Safety apparently.

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

Horrible scene Poo

Ugly

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

So Bob Mould with his lead breaks?
Discharge or Black Flag(ginn)?

Fer Ark, Tuesday, 29 July 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

you should ask him!

X post

I daren't!

Greg Norton responded to me from his restaurant though.

I questioned his menu. Looks nice tucker but it's a bit far away. Deliveries?
