it took a few listens, but this has really been growing on me--i guess like most Lambchop albums. A really cohesive sound/mood and beautiful playing throughout. So far the faves are "paperback bible," "prepared" and "fear." And the closer "Country Western Civilization" is kind of terrifying, with Wagner bellowing and the crashing piano. I'm not sure if I've got a grasp on the lyrical themes just yet--a lot of it sounds pretty bizarre, but in a good way. There's a nice tension between Wagner's curious mutterings and the overwhelming loveliness of the music. In short: I like!

"Paperback Bible" is indeed an absolute classic, but as for the rest of it - meh. It's just so prosaic, lyrically and vocally. The second and third tracks failed to grab my attention in any way, and then things reach a nadir of lifelessness in "A Day Without Glasses" - it doesn't seem to be about anything of interest, and he delivers it like he just doesn't care at all. A note of cynicism creeps in to "I Would Have Waited Here All Day" but this just adds to the sense of carelessness and disinterest. And things continue at the same steady tempo, with the same lack of interest, for the rest of the album. Ok the last track does change pace and style dramatically, but then it seems to be about some kind of private joke that I don't get.

six months pass...
'crackers' off the latest one is fantastic.

it's one of those tracks that lies dormant on a record despite a few listens and then suddenly announces it and holds you captive.
