We're talking albums, not songs here. I'm only familiar with her self-titled album.

S:Like A Prayer(the only one I've heard)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

there are lots of madonna threads. here is one:

Favorite Madonna Album (No Comps)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

Destroy: "I'm Breathless: Music from and inspired by the film 'Dick Tracy'"

seriously. destroy it.

The Giant Mechanical Ant (The Giant Mechanical Ant), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 02:59 (nineteen years ago)

rec w/o qualms: s/t, like a virgin, like a prayer, erotica, bedtime stories, ray of light

rec w/ qualms: true blue, music (confessions on a dance floore might end up here - still haven't really made my mind up)

not really rec: i'm breathless, american life

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

"True Blue" is easily her best album, hands down. I mean, people, "Open Your Heart" and "Live To Tell" are on it plus "White Heat" and "Jimmy Jimmy".

I'd say "Like A Prayer" is insubstantial beyond the singles.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 03:20 (nineteen years ago)

lee, you're not the same lee that lives in the bay area, right?

jäxøñ (jaxon), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 04:35 (nineteen years ago)

I'd say "Like A Prayer" is insubstantial beyond the singles.

...the singles, and 'keep it together'. (my favourite song off like a prayer (apart from the title track) is 'oh father')

i'm tempted to say s: everything, and d: don't be silly

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 08:49 (nineteen years ago)

"Keep It Together" was a single, though!

Actually, I'd meant to type "Like A Virgin" there, but it holds pretty true for both of them.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 09:03 (nineteen years ago)

destroy: Evita, American Life, Music

search: everything else.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 10:01 (nineteen years ago)

What about the awesomely cheesy "Till Death To Us Part"?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

There isn't a bad track on LaP.

Action Tim Vision (noodle vague), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 11:10 (nineteen years ago)

"Promise to Try" does drag, but, yeah, I'd say LAP and the eponymous debut are song-for-song her best, followed by Erotica, Ray of Light, Confessions on a Dance Floor, in that order.

Destroy: Like a Virgin, American Life

Meh: Bedtime Stories

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 12:11 (nineteen years ago)

Like a Prayer if sooo good…the "one two" punch of "Cherish" and "Dear Jessie" makes me misty…

veronica moser (veronica moser), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 12:26 (nineteen years ago)

"lee, you're not the same lee that lives in the bay area, right?"

I wish. My favorite place in the country. But unfortunately I'm over here on the east coast.

Lee is Free (Lee is Free), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

Why does every chick love "Like A Prayer?" it's such a horrendous marathon.

My favs are of course, "Everybody(in dub)"
"Angel" is a great example of pop sincerity.
Call me crazed, but I'm still really digging on "Sorry" it strikes me as having a really true urgency about it.
Obvious choice, but it's hard to fuck with "Into the Groove" in almost any given setting.
"Burning Up" is of course the most steller valley girl pillow fight ever.

astronautagogo (astronautagogo), Thursday, 18 May 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

Guilty pleasure.."Who's That Girl?"
Yeah I said it.

astronautagogo (astronautagogo), Thursday, 18 May 2006 00:24 (nineteen years ago)

"there are lots of madonna threads. here is one:" --scott seward

Nope, I don't participate in threads created by pitchfork nazi's. That's why i'm participating in this one instead.

astronautagogo (astronautagogo), Thursday, 18 May 2006 00:51 (nineteen years ago)

you might want to find another board then

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 18 May 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

who makes the pitchfork nazis?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 May 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

"Sorry" and "Hung Up" are pretty great.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Thursday, 18 May 2006 01:28 (nineteen years ago)

Both "Sorry" and "Hung Up", well, to find a stronger Madonna single than either of those two, you have to go back to "Take A Bow", if not "Bad Girl" or "Deeper And Deeper".

edward o (edwardo), Thursday, 18 May 2006 04:01 (nineteen years ago)

I know no one else agrees with me but "Cherish" makes me want to kill. I really, really, really fucking hate that song and it's the primary reason I will never, ever, ever intentionally purchase "Like A Prayer".

Dan (It Was Better When It Was Called "True Blue") Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 May 2006 04:03 (nineteen years ago)

"Give me strength give me joy -- MY DAN!"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 18 May 2006 04:05 (nineteen years ago)

"Cherish" is pretty sappy and sing-songy (and the staccato 'YOU - are - MY DEST - ineee / baby - CAN'T - you - SEEEE' doesn't help the melody) but I kinda love the whole album unequivocally.

"Over and Over" is my fave non-single lp cut.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 18 May 2006 04:10 (nineteen years ago)

Dan I will buy and send you "Like a Prayer", you need it. Email me yr address.

A Viking of Some Note (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 18 May 2006 04:16 (nineteen years ago)

search: Erotica, Bedtime Stories
destroy: Ray of Light. The filler even makes the singles sound bad.

those are the only ones i've heard

a.b. (alanbanana), Thursday, 18 May 2006 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

I like that one about 'Bill Oddie,Bill Oddie put your hands all over my body.'

dr lulu (dr lulu), Thursday, 18 May 2006 06:39 (nineteen years ago)

Seek "Like a Prayer" in particular but also "Like a Virgin", "Music" and "Ray Of Light".

Destroy "Erotica" in particular, but also "Bedtime Stories" and her pointless "Evita" and "I'm Breathless" albums.

"American Life" is better than its reputation, but still not among her classics.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 18 May 2006 10:17 (nineteen years ago)

In descending order of goodness: Confessions On A Dancefloor, Ray Of Light, Like A Prayer, Bedtime Stories, Erotica, True Blue, Music, Like A Virgin, Madonna, American Life, Who's That Girl, Evita, I'm Breathless

davidsim (davidsim), Thursday, 18 May 2006 11:25 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that one.

dr lulu (dr lulu), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

seven months pass...
I bought Like A Virgin last week: the digitally remastered CD. I don't know how it compares to any prior version. But what do you think of the LP? If you were me, would you hang on to it? I ask, I suppose, because I retain some ambivalence about it.

the pinefox (the pinefox), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:21 (nineteen years ago)

Explicate the rationale underlying said ambivalence.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

i never liked how it sounded. too sluggish.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

Her albums do tend to plod a bit.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:29 (nineteen years ago)

nile's production is too corny. in comparison to into the groove, the whole album is just too bloated and sleepy. love don't live here anymore is cool. i don't need to hear material girl or dress you up or angel anytime soon.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:33 (nineteen years ago)

at the time of release I thought her voice sounded really weird on LAV, helium-induced pitch compared to the debut. it's not my favorite nile rodgers production, not by a long shot, but tony thompson's drum-beat on the title track is absolutely classic.

in general the old girl's music hasn't aged well for this fan.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:43 (nineteen years ago)

i love the debut and everything else up to and including ray of light. like a virgin is the only album i never want to hear. i didn't buy anything after ray of light. i was scared to.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

Music and American Life are both pretty tedious, Confessions On A Dancefloor has its fans but I'm not one of them.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:54 (nineteen years ago)

1. Music >> 2. American Life >>>>>>>>> Confessions @ Dance Floor

1. rock-ish stuff "interesting" but instantly forgettable.
2. self-seriousness takes over. boring for the very first time.
3. depressing, she's repeating herself for the very first time.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:56 (nineteen years ago)

I always thought that her using Mirwais as a producer in 2004 was about as hip as using Nile Rodgers as a producer in 1984, i.e. not very.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 14:58 (nineteen years ago)

i thought the same thing! and i barely knew who mirwais was. even using william orbit seemed kinda lame at the time, but it worked after all.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:01 (nineteen years ago)

music and american life both have their low points but a lot of people have let the lowness of those low points blind them to the high points - 'die another day', 'nothing fails', 'music', 'don't tell me' and several others off both albums are up there with madonna's best.

lex pretend (lex pretend), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:02 (nineteen years ago)

"music" gave good single

m coleman (lovebug starski), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:04 (nineteen years ago)

You know how Warners released Ultimate Prince with that extra disc of remixes and extended versions? Doesn't Madonna need one of those?

In fact, I still listen to You Can Dance.

so S/D: Madonna remixes?

Viz (Viz), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

Mixed feelings. I like 1980s Madonna, don't really like post-1980s Madonna. But do I need a 1980s-Madonna LP, in full? I think I am attracted to the sound - the tinny keyboards and 'Billie Jean' guitar. But at times the sound also sounds cheap and thin - though I can also enjoy the thinness, as ... surprising minimalism?. Some great tracks: 'Material Girl', title track (I also like those drums on both), but also 'Angel' and - hidden highlight! - 'Dress You Up': love the first 30 seconds or so of this last. But I'm not sure about 'Love Don't Live Here' and surely the last 3 tracks (remixes aside) are just filler? Mixed feelings.

the pinefox (the pinefox), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 15:31 (nineteen years ago)

"Over and Over" is the secret highlight of Like a Virgin, almost as great as the obscure "Angel."

As for the rest of the second side, it's the worst of her career.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

"Angel" was a top five single in Britain...hardly obscure!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

Same here, but I never hear it on the radio.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:11 (nineteen years ago)

I like 'Angel' a lot, was surprised to read the other day that it was a hit 45, agree it should be on the radio. Not crazy for 'Over & Over'. But I can get along with the sound of these fast numbers. It's the ballads and pathos tracks that seem more flawed, perhaps.

the pinefox (the pinefox), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 16:55 (nineteen years ago)

The catch with "I'm Breathless," of course, is that it has Vogue on it. Still, D on that one.

And D: American Life. Music has "Don't Tell Me," at least.

S: everything else. I still feel her best album is the self-titled one. Fun from start to finish, and her most influential work for sure.

Matthew E. Armstrong (gensu3k1), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Madonna still needs to release a proper singles compilation, that is, a collection of the actual 7 inch mixes, the exact way they sounded when they were released as 7 inch singles back in the 80s.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 23:09 (nineteen years ago)
