Dance/Electronic Artists Who Have Yet To Release An Album, BUT You Think Would Probably Make A Good Hash Of It If They Ever Got Around To It - A List Thread Of Sorts

Thinking about this after something Mark K-Punk said on Dissensus about the Burial album, that it was like Luomo's Vocalcity insofar as she/he/it approached the album form "confidently", took advantage of it etc. This was presumably to most other electronic/dance artists who are a bit overwhelmed by the whole notion of the album form perhaps. I think maybe Mark just hasn't heard enough great albums in this general vein over the last few years, but the point probably remains broadly correct.

Now you don't have to tell me that when it comes to dance music tracks/vinyl/mix-cds is where the party at, and often artists I wait to make albums end up doing only half-decent jobs of it.

Nonetheless, who do I/you/we/they think could actually do something great if they were to ever to bother making a whole album?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

gabriel ananda (admittedly the album i have in mind is a vitalic-style compilation of singles)

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

"This was presumably compared to most other..." I meant to say.

Anyway, the first answer that popped into my head was: Jona! I know, I've only heard 3 tracks from him too, but on the evidence already presented ("Learning From The Mistakes", "Full Pool", "Yellowstone") he could make this marvellosuly dewy-eyed crunchy nougat album filled with sharp synths and softcore bass and woozy dub textures and fluttery drums and real swing, like the first Nightmares on Wax album meets New Horizons meets Herbert (in remixing form, not pretentious-Herbert) all filtered through Booka Shade/Get Physical. And it would work as well because he's got that album-friendly bittersweet feel locked down in the micro-sonics, the shimmery plasticity of the guitar sounds and whatnot and so on and so forth - he doesn't need vocalists or songstructures or microgoth affectations to win non-danceheads over, he'll lock them in with his sounds and melodies. But if he did use vocalists and songstructures it might end up like the swoony bits of A.R. Kane's I (e.g. "Honeysuckleswallow", "Crack Up" etc.) only, y'know, technoid. It would be great!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think dance music albums tend to come off half-decent anymore than albums of any other genre, personally.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

Also can I ask, how does Vocalcity take advantage of album format so well, if it does? I've never listened to it from start to end but given the length of many of the tracks this seems an interesting remark. And possibly a big reminder that k-punk = PROG NUT, as if we needed one, heh.

Konal Doddz (blueski), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

"I don't think dance music albums tend to come off half-decent anymore than albums of any other genre, personally. "

Oh, they don't! I meant more that often I wait out desperately for the artist albums and then predictably don't enjoy them as much as comparable mix-cds. The artist-album form generally is not particularly efficient or cost-effective on the whole, regardless of genre.

The first Luomo album is very prog yes, but if you enjoy its prog inclinations then those prog inclinations make even more sense over the course of the album than a track at a time. There's a good err ebb and flow to it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 13:52 (nineteen years ago)

But Vocalcity was compiled from three previous 12 inches! I don't know if Delay was thinking in "album mode."

I'd love to hear an album by The Glimmers, if they could pull off an album similar in style to their mixes...

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 15:38 (nineteen years ago)

gabriel ananda

*ahem*

fez (fez), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 16:08 (nineteen years ago)

did he make a good hash of it?

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 16:09 (nineteen years ago)

its pretty good and the german press loved it, but Ananda wasnt exactly a household name back then so it didnt sell too well i think

fez (fez), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 16:19 (nineteen years ago)

The Field, maybe, or Jesse Somfay, or Fairmont.

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

Oops, totally missed this. Anyone heard it?

jergins (jergins), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

"But Vocalcity was compiled from three previous 12 inches! I don't know if Delay was thinking in "album mode.""

I know! I'm not sure if Mark K-Punk does. It does work well as an album though (my comments above wasn't meant to imply that the tracks don't work well individually or in mixes, just their progginess is heightened on the album, which is maybe what Mark likes).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 23:21 (nineteen years ago)

i own the (6 sided) vinyl so i don't think i've ever listened to it all the way through.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 23:25 (nineteen years ago)

i should!

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

TONY
FUCKING
SENGHORE

Wackdaddies and La Cienda Honduras have released albums, but are the few releases that actually have a filler factor.

Tony Senghore needs to put out compilations of his singles from 1999 to the present...

DOQQUN (donut), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

If the Digital Mystikz ever get an album together it should be suitably earth shattering.

Siah Alan (Siah Alan), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 23:34 (nineteen years ago)

I'd also love Schad Privat to put together an album where he gets production from all the usual Firm cats (Schaeben & Voss, Geiger, Andre Kraml) but also outside help from Mayer, Fuckpony and Steve Barnes.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

TV Rock!

OK, I'm blatantly baiting Tim at this point :D

DOQQUN (donut), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

gabriel ananda and trentemoller OTM

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 23:54 (nineteen years ago)

They've released a long EP at largest, but I also have to nominate local guys Jacob London.

DOQQUN (donut), Tuesday, 16 May 2006 23:54 (nineteen years ago)

Donut I've decided I don't actually hate TV Rock as much as I implied the other week. My angst was caused by having to review a large number of new Aussie electro-house tracks which are like "Flaunt It" but much much worse. It's more of a "what hast thou wrought???" situation.

i bet the magda lp will be good.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

Tricky OTM but then again I think all Perlon artists should have a full length! Kalabrese especially.

Re: Somfay full-length = he really indulges in his sentimental prog-house side. It's pretty good but hard to listen to it all in one sitting.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

when i was coming up with my list i thought that about perlon too.

i do agree with the general premise behind this thread though.

the "full length" that has been most impressing me lately is that de:bug exclusive bugs compilation. it makes me think that there is a lot of room here for excellently curated unmixed comps.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

or even lightly mixed for that matter.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:37 (nineteen years ago)

I would like to hear An-2 make an album of their very slow disco/house with songs longer than their 12".

Jacobs (LolVStein), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:57 (nineteen years ago)

please talk more about an-2. :)

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 05:03 (nineteen years ago)

An artist album from one of the MBF artist that is as good as Flashback, but I'm not sure who. Steve Barnes, Daso, Adam Kroll ?

Jacobs (LolVStein), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 05:05 (nineteen years ago)

Get this 12" by An-2 http://www.discogs.com/release/520219

Jacobs (LolVStein), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 05:06 (nineteen years ago)

have you heard the process albums? those are steve barnes pre-MBF thus not like flashback, but still pretty great. i will check out that single. thanks.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 05:10 (nineteen years ago)

I like the process albums, though they are lighter almost too bright at times.

tricky check your mail

Jacobs (LolVStein), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 05:20 (nineteen years ago)

"de:bug exclusive bugs compilation"

I haven't heard this but the tracklisting looks ace ace ace.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 05:59 (nineteen years ago)

Markus Nikolai

Waaaaaay overdue.

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 06:06 (nineteen years ago)

I have his album, it's really good. http://www.discogs.com/release/77742

Jacobs (LolVStein), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 06:09 (nineteen years ago)

The first three tracks are really good. The album has nice jazzy interludes, and ends with a drawn out slow burning downtempo(sic) song called Stars.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 06:11 (nineteen years ago)

I adore the Markus Nikolai album, and mention it gratuitously all over ILM - but since it does exist it probably falls outside what I mean... he's already proven himself as a good album-maker. But yeah, WAY OVERDUE!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 06:13 (nineteen years ago)

Such a forward-looking album - you could totally imagine "Backbeat" or "Superstar" coming out today on Get Physical or Tuning Spork or whatever other hot label and being loved by everybody.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 06:14 (nineteen years ago)

To me he's like a happier maybe a more charming Matias Agauyo.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 06:17 (nineteen years ago)

I meant Closer Music.

Jacobs (LolVStein), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 06:28 (nineteen years ago)

*smacks forehead*

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 06:48 (nineteen years ago)

Black Strobe and James Holden are obvious candidates.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 07:26 (nineteen years ago)

A Legowelt album should be interesting too (a proper album not a singles collection).

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

I disagree with Trentemoller, his own material nearly always seems to be under-par compared with his remixes. Also, you'd expect him to drag in a few third-rate vocalists here and there. Everyone throught the Tiefschwarz album would be awesome as well.

There appears to be an MFA album - is it any cop?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 07:57 (nineteen years ago)

different MFA isn't it?

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 08:07 (nineteen years ago)

I would really like a Dirk Leyers full length. Wellen showed that he was the Departures side of Closer Musik and while I really enjoyed Are you really lost? I reckon Dirk could maybe surpass it.

What about Luciano? He's done full lengths but not a Luciano full length as far as I know.

jimnaseum doof-doof-doof, Wednesday, 17 May 2006 08:43 (nineteen years ago)

different MFA isn't it?

Oh, right. MFA then.

Salt City Orchestra.

scnnr drkly (scnnr drkly), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:04 (nineteen years ago)

(jacobs, i didn't receive any mail from you. maybe the great ILM email monster ate it? i am sending one your way)

it would be really wonderful to hear a nü-disco or nü-house album. not micro-house, not electro-house, but something post all of these things that manages to incorporate them yet look back without being nostaglic or overly reverent. something has to come out of the 2005-2006 styles of abuse of the traditional songform and extended extended remixes although those two things seem to be perennial trends at this point (at least for the past few years). the extended extended thing seems really pronounced right now, but maybe that's just a reflection of my listening habits.

i am pining for the perfect summer album.

add to the list: henrik schwarz!

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

salt city orchestra seconded!

my vote is for jess + crabbe. actually, there are 100s of frenchy producers ... black strobe!

Prosumer!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

ok that gabriel ananda album is just awesome on first listen

W i l l (common_person), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 22:30 (nineteen years ago)

the henrik schwarz album is a (very expensive if you can find it) promo-only mix therefore it doesn't count. it's super good too. i think vahid might even like it. blunt might even let us call it deep. heh. basic channel neo-disco + impeccable mixing/programming.

breakfast pants (disco stu), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

I'm even letting you guys call me DUMMKOPF for not tracking this down. Mildly jealous.

We haven't had a Julien Jabre album have we? That could be something else...

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 18 May 2006 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

one month passes...
Just stopping through to let Tim know that Jona has an album on the way for Get Physical (yeah, I know, I could mention on a Get Physical thread and keep all the information together, but no fun).

And I second demands for Prosumer, Kalabrese, and Schad Privat albums (even if it is just a compilation of Schaeben and/or Andre Kraml productions - is it me or are the Schaben and Voss 12"s by far the most underated of Kompakt releases, or have I just somehow missed all their deserved applause).

Oh, and I also want Midnight Mike, and My My albums (who are 3 for 3 for their released 12"S, and according to Ewan Pearson up to 4 for 4).

and, why not, a Ewan Pearson album.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 23 June 2006 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

"is it me or are the Schaben and Voss 12"s by far the most underated of Kompakt releases, or have I just somehow missed all their deserved applause"

Not to mention that they haven't released one for 4 years! Even their output on Firm since then has been rather fleeting. I count group-ish 2 EPs, some production work for Schad, some co-production with Geiger, Voss's Call Me Killer and....????

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Friday, 23 June 2006 05:17 (nineteen years ago)

I hadn't realised it had been so long since "The World Is Crazy 2", nor how inconsistent my spelling of schaeben was.

They still persist on taunting us though. I was reminded of them because a new remix of Aswefall's Youngeez, and you mentioning them in regards to a Popnoname 12" on some thread (p.s. it's worth getting, even if only in mp3 form).

Hell, going by their release on Italic, and Firm, I'd be interested in a Popnoname album.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Friday, 23 June 2006 05:41 (nineteen years ago)

The prospect of a Jona album makes me very excited.
