I know some of you don't believe in live records, but you have to give the question some thought and pretend you must answer, or die. Okay, then lets begin. I guess since I pose the question I'll begin. The Beach Boys "In Concert".The line up at this time included Ricky Fatar and Blondie Chaplin. Great Stuff!

Doubtless there have been about eight threads on this before, though! (Jim, trust me, check those archives! ;-))

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I used to like sting-bring on the night. Not really into sting anymore but still think that was a good band he put together. Now, maybe the gits-seafish louisville.

chaki, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

James Brown 'Love Power Peace', Coltrane 'Live at Birdland', Doors 'In Concert', the Roots 'Roots Come Alive', Miles Davis 'Four & More', Dead Can Dance 'Toward the Within' (probably the only band where the live album is my absolute favorite), Bill Evans 'Sunday at the Village Vanguard', Hendrix 'Live at the Fillmore East', Masada 'Live in Sevilla', Maceo Parker 'Life on Planet Groove' (um, same thing as Dead Can Dance), ad infinitum. Live albums rule.

Jordan, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And Portishead and King Crimson 'Absent Lovers'.

Jordan, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hawkwind Space Ritual. Best Live Album Ever. Or something like that.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My favourite live albums (out of exactly 400 I have), in something resembling order of preference: Live at the Star Club, Hamburg (Jerry Lee Lewis), Live At The Apollo 1962 (James Brown), Time's Up (Buzzcocks), Live 1966 (Bob Dylan), Coast To Coast/Overture and Beginners (Faces), Slade Alive! (Slade - first album I ever bought!), Everything, Everything (Underworld), Live At the Harlem Square Club, 1963 (Sam Cooke), Live At The Counter Eurovision 1979 (Misty In Roots), 1969 Velvet Underground Live, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out! (Rolling Stones), Funhunt (Richard Hell & the Voidoids), Folsom Prison (Johnny Cash), Live at the Sahara Tahoe (Isaac Hayes), Live! (Bob Marley & the Wailers), Mission Accomplished...But the Beat Goes On (Rezillos), Kick Out the Jams (MC5), Live Seeds (Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds), The Wildest Show At Tahoe (Louis Prima), Ghost Riders (Suicide), 60 Second Wipe Out (Atari Teenage Riot), In Living Black and White (Kevin Coyne), Live (O.V. Wright), Live Rust or Weld (Neil Young), Live In Tokyo (PIL), The Blow-Up (Television), Pigpile (Big Black), Stupidity (Dr Feelgood), Live at Leeds (Who), Royal Albert Hall (Spiritualized).

Oh, and a note to whoever thought this lovely database of mine is some sort of general reference: all the data it contains is the music I have.

Martin Skidmore, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm with space ritual.

Sylvian / Fripp - DAMAGE (1994)

brian, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Live at Budokan!

Miranda, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Stop Making Sense", Talking Heads. Mainly because it sounds more like an actual album than just a bunch of live recordings.

Judd Nelson, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

vital (van der graaf).

cecilia, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ew no, I thin Vital is awful - I'd really like to have heard a live album from the least/H to He / Pawn period though.

Speaking of prog, I like Genesis Live (the first one) The version of The Knife is ace.

Alexander Blair, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Whole lotta great records already listed here, to which I'll add

AC/DC If you want blood…you've got it, Yardbirds Five live Yardbirds, Cream Wheels of fire (record 2), Status Quo live (another band whose live record far outstrips the studio stuff), Deep Purple Made in Japan, Nirvana Unplugged, Rolling Stones Got live if you want it, Thin Lizzy Live & dangerous, Rory Gallagher Irish tour '74, ZZ Top Fandango (live side), Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East, and leaving the best till last Ramones It's alive.

Tim Franklin, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hey Alex do you have Space Ritual on LP with the Giant Fold Open Cover? I do. Where in SF do you live? Hayes Valley here.

Sean, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

NO SLEEP `TIL HAMMERSMITH by Motorhead and IT'S ALIVE by the Ramones.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Go ahead, admit it...Frampton Comes Alive!

Perri Ellis, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Frampton Comes Alive should come with a sticker on the front: "Warning: Loads of Overdubs."

chaki, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sean, I used to have the gorgeous vinyl version, but it disappeared in one of my many moves. Now I content myself with the One Way CD version (I'm thinking about picking the new reissue with bonus tracks- -drools a bit). I live on the outskirts of the Tenderloin.

Alex in SF, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I am currently listening to the PERFECT "James Brown - Sex Machine Recorded Live at Home in Augusta, Georgia With His Bad Self," released on PolyGram Records in 1970. Parts of it are damn near afrobeat. This is, believe it or not, much better than the more-celebrated "Live at the Apollo," and includes a sweet instrumental cover of the otherwise-terrible Blood, Sweat & Tears song "Spinning Wheel," as well as an absolutely tremendous version of "Give it Up or Turn it Loose." I should also mention the phenomenal "J. Geils Band Blow Your Face Out - Live," a close second runner, with the phenom instrumental "Sno-Cone," the ripping "Houseparty," and the definitive version of "Must Have Got Lost."

J, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best part about 'Sex Machine' is that half of it isn't even life. Overdubbed applause does not a live album make. :> I find it charming.

Jordan, Sunday, 17 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

the Caff singles by Buffalo Tom and Galaxie 500

Beethoven Was Deaf - the best Morrisey solo record

Robin, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Because they capture the artists the way studio records never could:
Live at Leeds - the Who
Rock and Roll Animal - Lou Reed

Document/Eyewitness - Wire

Dave225, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

definitely who live at leeds for me too.

fields of salmon, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Actually, there are only two songs on Sex Machine that aren't live. And yes, there is overdubbed crowd noise on those two. But it doesn't MATTER!

J, Monday, 18 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes Minna!,

Its the only live album i have that really adds anything to the Underworld sound if you own the albums. King of Snake is amazing on Everything Everything and I like it better than on Beaucoup Fish. I saw them do it at Glastonbury '99. Awesome.

JB, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Now it's my turn to stink up the joint ;-p

The Best Bank You've Never Heard in Your Life, Broadway the Hard Way, Make a Jazz Noise Here, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Fillmore East June 1971, The Yellow Shark, Saarbrucken 1979, Roxy and Elsewhere, the entire You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore series (but esp. Vols. 1, 2, and 6), Sheik Yerbouti (yes, it was a live recording), Just Another Band from L.A., Ahead of Their Time, Does Humor Belong In Music?, In New York, Playground Psychotics (with John and Yoko!), Tinsel Town Rebellion, Freaks and Motherf*%!!@, Baby Snakes, and 'Tis the Season to Be Jelly. All by you-know-who.

I also like Kiss Alive!.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

so there!

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DAMMIT!

Is this normal now?

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

roxy and elsewhere is so damn good.

chaki, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chaki, if you like Roxy and Elsewhere, you should also pick up You Can't Do That On Stage, Vol. 2. Same band, live in Helsinki. Maybe the greatest post-Mothers band Zappa put together (though the 1988 "Best Band You've Never Heard In Your Life" gives them a run for the money).

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All by you-know-who

This Liberace fetish of yours must cease.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

thanks Tadeusz, i have it but its just not as CLEAR sounding as roxy and elsewhere and the songs are like double speed on that helsinki performance.

chaki, Wednesday, 20 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

devo - now it can be told: live at the palace 12/9/88

dave q, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Most of my favorite live albums are jazz. These come to mind:

Cecil Taylor Ensemble - Always A Pleasure
Ornette Coleman - At the Golden Circle
Albert Ayler - In Greenwich Village

o. nate, Thursday, 21 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

four years pass...
My two favourite live albums are 69 Live by the Velvet Underground and Hot August Night, Neil Diamond. I can't pick between the two. my brother makes the same call. After that would probably be Live Rust and Live at Leeds (but the original release; the recent re-release has too many tracks that detract from the power and hardness of the thing)

lil' merzbow wow (haitch), Thursday, 20 April 2006 15:35 (twenty years ago)

801 Live (Manzanera, Eno et al.) Does anyone know the live vs. overdubbed story on this? The sound is damn good.

I concur with "Roxy and Elsewhere" for three sides of the LP. I can't deal with all the audience participation on "The Bebop Tango of the Old Jazzmen's Church."

Daniel Peterson (polkaholic), Thursday, 20 April 2006 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I think Wilco's Kicking Television from a few months ago is one of the best in a long while.
