Because if there is I have never heard it.

Probably my favourite song on my favourite album.

So: broken amps and piano melodies this way.

The Boy Who Cried YSI? (Freud Junior), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 00:59 (nineteen years ago)

if you really wanted to hear more songs like that, you could try listening to your voicemail/answering machine while playing william basinski in the same room

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 01:14 (nineteen years ago)

good call.

The Boy Who Cried YSI? (Freud Junior), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 01:18 (nineteen years ago)

but then i need to actually buy an old-skool answering machine to create the desired effect.

The Boy Who Cried YSI? (Freud Junior), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 01:19 (nineteen years ago)

i should made an album completely made of distortion+piano melodies+slowed down answering-machine messages!

The Boy Who Cried YSI? (Freud Junior), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 01:20 (nineteen years ago)

it would sell millions!

The first track on Slipknot's Iowa.

I don't think this is what you were looking for, but it's something I remembered.

Chris Bee (Cee Bee), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 02:31 (nineteen years ago)

mogwai - young team

more specifically, 'young portfolio' for distortion/piano melodies, second half of 'tracy' for the weird answering machine messages

TAO (daggerlee), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe something from Rachel's, System/Layers?

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 02:56 (nineteen years ago)

"Fitter Happier."

Listen to it again, but imagine hearing it without the computer voice and then you'll see what I mean.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 02:57 (nineteen years ago)

daydream nation, young team, ok computer..

short/transition track of lo-fi voicemail + distorted piano
it's such a common device!
there must be many other popular albums that use this

I don't remember this Sonic Youth track, but from the description, I think there are a few Tool tracks like this. Try "Message to Harry Manback," for example.

punis (punis), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:12 (nineteen years ago)

i hate tool.

The Boy Who Cried YSI? (Freud Junior), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 04:36 (nineteen years ago)

but thanks.

The Butthole Surfers' "Strangers Die Everyday" is quite similar to "Providence", which it predated by a year or two. It's from Rembrandt Pussyhorse, and sounds absolutely nothing like any other song in their songbook. A depressing dirge consisting of mournful organ, looped voices chanting the title over and over, and very little else. It was played over teh end-credits of Richard Linklater's "Slacker".

Prefuse 73's "Seventh Message" makes good with the ansaphone sadness.

There's a Kathleen Hanna answering machine message TO Mike Watt on "Heartbeat" from Watt's "Balhog or Tugboat?" album.

Loop just the intro to the album version of XTC's "Respectable Street" over and over and over again.

Lots of early Severed Heads would qualify. "Alaskan Polar Bear Heater" would qualify...

"You want me to do that again? I'll do it again... EMMMMMEEEEEEEAAAAYOOOO *BHHHXXXXX* MYEEEP *BHHHX* MYEEP"

"..."

"well if you like it that much, I'll do it again!

Loop just the intro to the album version of XTC's "Respectable Street" over and over and over again.

I did this one time! Mind you, I mean the pounding drums intro bit. Sounded like a Public Enemy outtake.

Guess you mean the telephone line sounding bit.

Papa M - Crowd of One. (Track 7 on 'Live from a shark cage')

What sounds like one old guy's Answerphone messages over stark and somewhat hautning background.
