Off to The Garage tomorrow to see these guys, friend recommends them. They've not come up on my radar. Any good?

tolstoy (tolstoy), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 08:46 (nineteen years ago)

Try the Search function. There've been some threads about these guys.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 08:52 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry. It'd be useful if 'search' was at the top of the page we're I might remember it exists.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 09:21 (nineteen years ago)

Yep! There's 'some threads' there.

Must try harder.

Must try harder.

Must try harder.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 09:33 (nineteen years ago)

good suggestion though,.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 09:34 (nineteen years ago)

they're really damn good. bass / drums duo. insane. complicated stuff, but dosn't come accross as contrived or overly technical crap. there's alot of room for movement. from what i hear (i live in australia, so i haven't had a chance to see them), they're extremely loud live...enjoy it.

Shaun Leacy (cassettessac), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

It's been difficult in the past 5 (10? 15?) years to find bands a) doing something fresh + exciting, b) doing something fresh + exciting that's also compelling. Lightning Bolt are a standout in the category. Their sound can get a little same-y but they've taken it a lot further then I thought they could've, so props to them.

They have a unique way of "taking the stage" so don't blow off the band playing before them.

Edward III (edward iii), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:18 (nineteen years ago)

I wanted to go to the Luminaire on May 28th, but it is SOLD OUT. I think they are an EXCITING GROUP.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, seems I'm not going to see them tomorrow now as sold out at both dates. (sigh)

tolstoy (tolstoy), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:41 (nineteen years ago)

Sorry. It'd be useful if 'search' was at the top of the page [where] I might remember it exists.

-- tolstoy (giveitupso...), May 17th, 2006.

This is totally OTM.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:43 (nineteen years ago)

Yup, yer right spelling mistake.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:44 (nineteen years ago)

i hear the "noise board" knows something about this musical recording group

late to the bloom to the er (latebloomer), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

But your idea is good, for real. It happens over and over again -- relatively new poster comes to the board, starts a thread, everyone jumps on them for being redundant, the person didn't know about the search function. (xpost)

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:51 (nineteen years ago)

Ideally it should be located on a raised button, cycle through 11 different colour schemes whilst flashing and rotating. A mild electric shock could perhaps be transmitted through the mouse via javascripting also.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:54 (nineteen years ago)

The idea of moving it up top has been discussed and will probably be implemented. In the meantime, pardon our sarcasm if people do not take the time to read.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:55 (nineteen years ago)

On top of the page? Are you guys all seeing a different version? Mine IS at the top of the page. You know, where it has that field with the dropdowns and the GO button...
My problem is that search often craps out or won't index things properly, so I miss the threads that I'm looking for...

js (honestengine), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 12:57 (nineteen years ago)

"By checking this box, I guarantee that I have sufficiently used the search function to avoid redundancy before posting this thread. I waive my right to not be mercilessly made fun of if this is a duplicate thread."

On top of the page? Are you guys all seeing a different version? Mine IS at the top of the page. You know, where it has that field with the dropdowns and the GO button...

That has to be added in your personal settings, it doesn't show up by default.

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:01 (nineteen years ago)

We could just put it at the top of the "Ask a Question" screen. So when people go to start a new thread, there could be a little message, "Would you like to search for this topic first?"

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:04 (nineteen years ago)

Actually looking back through some of those old Lightning Bolt threads is kind of amusing. I like the one where Tom Breihan says that LB is making all other rock music irrelevant.

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

I like the idea of a little ILX wizard assistant thingy. Of course it would look like Ned.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

What would you like to do?

-- search the archives ;)
-- start a new thread :-)
-- troll the board *bemused*

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:36 (nineteen years ago)

I always find that just going to Google and searching for "band x" + "ilm" works about as good as using the search (obviously some things aren't indexed or whatever) and a good deal quicker(I always find the search on here quite slow).

jimnaseum doof-doof, Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

The Search page does have a "search using Google" option. That's what I always use, since it's a lot faster than the ILX search function. (And it's less likely to "poxy fule" the boards)

o. nate (onate), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

I'm going to see them tonight, touch wood. Although this "sold out" business sounds ominous.

Action Tim Vision (noodle vague), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

I probably won't do this on ILM again, but if you are sufficiently dedicated I'm putting them on in Cardiff next Monday, with Volcano!, I'm Being Good, Truckers of Husk and DJ Scotch Egg. It isn't sold out. Yet.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 15:26 (nineteen years ago)

although the garage gig is supposedly sold out, seetickets are now selling tickets to it again...

JW (ex machina), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for the info, Toby.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

the thing that's distracting about this band is that the drummer/singer is constantly readjusting his facemask.

completely blows it for me.

also, what does OTM mean

jonathon, Wednesday, 17 May 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

volcano! were great. Lightning Bolt were grrrrrrrrrrreat. I have headbanger's neck.

Hi fandango! Hope you enjoyed it too. I got talking to some mates I haven't seen for ages; will give you a shout some time if you fancy some beers.

Seriously guys, it was wasome.

Action Tim Vision (noodle vague), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 23:06 (nineteen years ago)

strangely I don't feel able to sleep just yet =) *kkreeaaaggnnnudududdadnnnang*

I'm still not fussed enough to pick up their records personally but they definitely know how to rock, check them out in your town! etcetera.

email (my ilx thing works) sometime yeah. Nice to meet you, didn't mean to slip off without saying bye or anything.

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 23:32 (nineteen years ago)

Well it all got a bit frenetic, innit?

The drummer's mask was scarily Hulk Hogan.

Action Tim Vision (noodle vague), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

bring ear plugs.

astronautagogo (astronautagogo), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 23:51 (nineteen years ago)

i would love to see these guys.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Thursday, 18 May 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

Tinnitus still whistling along nicely. Apparently a kebab shop blew up just down the road last night. I didn't hear anything.

Action Tim Vision (noodle vague), Thursday, 18 May 2006 07:15 (nineteen years ago)

The videos on their site are pretty funny. Looks mad, looking forward to it, keep you posted.

The Google bar jobbie works for me.

This is why I sometimes question the no new thread shoutdowns, we've bounced along nicely here tippy toeing across a couple of useful topics and brought all manner of happiness and knowledge to all.

Keep tapping them keys.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Thursday, 18 May 2006 07:53 (nineteen years ago)

Bugger, I would have gone to that gig if I'd known they started selling tickets again, I thought it was sold out. Oh well.

Glad someone else asked this question, not sure about the answer though!

tolstoy (tolstoy), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:29 (nineteen years ago)

wow. that might just have been the best gig i've ever seen them play! i think i'm getting too old for this shit, though. certainly too old to see them 4 times in the next week, despite having the tickets to do so...

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 18 May 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

I got in tonight! I was on the train home from work reading the Metro and it said they were playing tonight with the Magik Markers so I thought I might as well see if I can get in, they had 20 tickets left on the door! I love last minute gigs. Helps if you live on a direct bus route from the Garage though.

The Magik Markers played about 40 minutes of almost constant noise, no pauses whatsoever. Then just "Thanks, we're the Magik Markers, Lightning Bolt is next". That 40 minutes seemed to be half the time though.

Lightning Bolt were fucking amazing. First time I've seen them, I have to say they weren't _quite_ as loud as I thought they might be, although of course they were fucking loud. Not Dinosaur Jr/MBV/Motorhead loud though. The drummer moved his whole drum kit out into the middle of the audience towards the end of their set! The noise that they get out of a bass guitar is incredible.

Woo! Now I'm all hyper and it's midnight and I have to go to stupid work tomorrow. Bugger.

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 18 May 2006 22:06 (nineteen years ago)

Heh! That was good.

"UP AGAINST THE WALL!" He's a bossy bastard isn't he? Lost a good half stone there in sweat. I loved the dragging of drum kit into the audience. He's amazing to watch, staring right into peoples faces whilst pummeling the kit, I guess that's where the energy comes from.

My only complaint is people standing next to you stock still in a mosh pit trying to get pictures on their stupid phones.

YOU DO NOT STAND STILL IN A MOSH PIT!

tolstoy (tolstoy), Thursday, 18 May 2006 22:43 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah the picture taking was annoying. I couldn't get close enough to actually see them!

Colonel Poo (Colonel Poo), Thursday, 18 May 2006 22:49 (nineteen years ago)

Jesus Christ I thought you meant the Metro in Chicago and I almost went into cardiac arrest

Roque Strew (RoqueStrew), Thursday, 18 May 2006 23:20 (nineteen years ago)

Lightning Bolt gigs are too intense for me. Saw them in London in December. Made me feel physically sick. I was about 30cm away from them tbh.

Now...record another Wizardzz LP!

so excited to see them next week... only chance i ever got was at p4k fest and it was in the middle of the day and they were playing on a huge stage and it was kinda weird for them

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 16 April 2015 14:28 (ten years ago)

Lightning Bolt live is one of those experiences that kinda transcends (in the right room) whatever preconceptions you might have of what it is gonna be like. They just steamroll reality right the fuck out of the way and all that is left is the totality of Lightning Bolt. Well, LB and all the spasming humans unable to help themselves from moving along to the music but not quite being able to figure out how to do so.

grandavis, Thursday, 16 April 2015 14:33 (ten years ago)

hell yes

global tetrahedron, Thursday, 16 April 2015 15:03 (ten years ago)

nostormo, Thursday, 16 April 2015 21:38 (ten years ago)

I saw RUINS at the same club a while ago... interested to see how LB stacks up

the late great, Thursday, 16 April 2015 21:45 (ten years ago)

Most recently I saw them play a Mexican restaurant in Santa Fe. Towards the end of the set me and my wife left and went across the street to relax for a minute (it was crushingly sweaty/crowded) and it was still too loud to talk to face to face.

They're playing Neumos in Seattle, which I am not too excited about- every loud show I've seen there lately is just so blown out sounding.

solo album from Brian Gibson! http://thrilljockey.com/products/thumper-thrill-435

Brian Gibson, bassist for the ballistic duo Lightning Bolt, makes his solo debut on Thumper, approaching the rhythmic violence his music is known for with a propensity for tense, electronic thrusts, pulsing synth swells, and symphonic bursts. Drawing from music originally created for the hit video game of the same name that Gibson created the art and music for, the album takes the listener on a trek through trans-dimensional journey where the brutality of the music’s momentum is equally entrancing. Despite the presence of lush, even soothing tones, the tensions that blossom from each track overwhelm the senses to invigorating effect.

flappy bird, Thursday, 23 February 2017 19:48 (nine years ago)

You shouldn't put too much stock into what breathless press releases say but that makes it sound amazing. Hope it's good.
