coming in off of the record store discussion re: philly, princeton and nyc:

what are the good record stores not in downtown manhattan and north brooklyn?

or good sidewalk sale locations?

Dan Gr (certain), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:05 (nineteen years ago)

truly, your friend is craigslist. or walking down the right street on a sunny afternoon.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:18 (nineteen years ago)

but yeah, what is this bronx place i keep hearing about? bronx proper, not mooncurser, who i have yet to visit.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:20 (nineteen years ago)

ok, there are some north brooklyn places in here unfortunately.

Halcyon
new and old dance music, pricey but well stocked

Fusetron
amazing avant/noise online distributor and label. you can buy stright from Chris if you ask nicely. not really a place to browse as it is his home.

Eat Records
greenpoint, nice people

>The Thing
worth a trip once in your life, esp for the migraine it will give you

Somethin' Else
spotty at best. but if you walk in the day after they picked up a good collection you can gorge yourself.

Beat Street
a fulton mall classic. good for hip hop singles.

Coxsone's Music City
reggae lovers destination. nb: on fulton, but NOT anywhere near fulton mall

Easystar
reggae shop listings here

Mooncurser Records
on city island. i need to check this guy out, and i hear city island is a great day trip (fried scallops by the piers).

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:33 (nineteen years ago)

^^^ above by no means definitive, please add

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

i've heard rumor of some market in the bronx too.

i thought coxsone's was long gone. thanks for the links.

Dan Gr (certain), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

i'll add to your list the couple of non standards i know:

dudes at 158th and b'way (northeast corner) who sell bits of old dj collections on the sidewalk. some different dudes were out there at that same spot last summer also selling old dj collections with great early hip hop singles, 99 stuff, kraftwerk and other typical nyc sets.

dude at 111th and b'way (northwest corner) selling books supposedly has interesting old punk records in his collection from time to time (rumor of a josef k single or something).

i hear that miggy is back up operating his bedroom record store now on a sidewalk somewhere certain days of the month?

Dan Gr (certain), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:46 (nineteen years ago)

i just called Coxsone's and they're still in business, open every day save Sunday.

Miggy is back selling stuff? anyone have details, locations?

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 14:32 (nineteen years ago)

if you hit Beat Street, walk a few blocks towards the courts/downtown brooklyn and check out upstairs at Music Factory, lots of similar club bootlegs, hi-nrg compilations, best of bobby O, etc. I bought a bootleg of Virtual by Black Dog.

Random old record store near the corner of 5th ave and 9th street in Park Slope, carries some cheap-o rock in the boxes outside, tons of freestyle, mostly stuff you'd pay a dollar for but listed at 5 or 6. I bought a copy of the WBMX classic Dancing in My Sleep for 2 bucks outside there a few weeks ago, same day I stopped by mike's guy at the 7th ave park slope flea market.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

This question can be answered with the shorter "...why bother?"

if i'm thinking of the right place, Music Factory is done.

the upstairs is shuttered, and as of my last visit in February, all the leftover vinyl was selling downstairs at huge discount and 2 for 1 on top of that. it was mostly bad hip hop, but i was able to score several Go4 Entertainment! repressings for $3 each. i guess i'll use em as birthday gifts for people.

then again i might be thinking of a different fulton music store.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 15:06 (nineteen years ago)

why bother? Because Beat Street is awesome? Because I've bought some of my best records in the dollar bins and at flea markets in south brooklyn?

The aforementioned Something Else has been a treasure trove to me when they pick up the right collections.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

and to Dan's 7th ave park slope flea market mention, if you're in the area you could do well at the PS 321 weekend market on 7th ave and 1st st.

saturdays there is sometimes a old guy with mostly garbage, but he had some amazing stuff a month ago. cheap too.

sunday there is a young guy with tables and a record fair type setup, mostly rock and priced correctly. some world music.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 15:11 (nineteen years ago)

Music Factory is shutting down the upstairs and selling off everything... I think it was 2 for $5 on 12"s or something.

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

If Long Island counts, this guy runs a really nice shop.

http://www.infinityrecords.net/

Everything's in nice shape, prices are reasonable, and there are tons of $1.99 LPs against the far wall.

Sang Freud (jeff_s), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

What's that big basementthrift shop in W'burg on the same street as Capone's (N9th?)? I bought a stack of cool stuff there (lots of ZTT 12" singles) about a year ago but haven't been back since.

Jay Vee's Return (Manon_69), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

jay vee, i'm guessing its Junk? people rave about it on ILM but i've never gotten seen anything good there.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

junk is better for comics & used books.

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

I've asked this question before, on and off ILM, and have never received a positive answer, but is there anywhere good to buy country music in (or near) NYC?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 18 May 2006 07:30 (nineteen years ago)

Good question! From my experience it's impossible to find good country stock anywhere around here (although in the NYT article about the Thing two weeks ago the photo showed a guy holding a Charlie Rich LP, I still haven't been there myself yet). I chalk it up to regional tastes--most people in this area have never given a damn about country music, so not only are there less LPs going around, even if a store has some stock they'll relegate it to the dark corners of the store (see PREX, which has about two bins total for the whole store, located underneath the oldies shelves in a terrible spot).

Keith C (lync0), Thursday, 18 May 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

there was an article about the thing in the nytimes?

Dan Gr (certain), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

yeh a couple sundays ago.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:44 (nineteen years ago)

These aren't places to count on, but I've found loads of country LPs at: the Salvation Army on 8th Ave near 21st Street; and Colony, on 50th and Broadway.

Paul Eater (eater), Thursday, 18 May 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

my advice is not to bother with Salvation Army. finding pharoah sanders record jackets with nothing inside them or rare electro sides that are gouged up so badly that they are unplayable is not fun.

it will only end in tears.

and there are lot's of other sites, but all of them are fake... (sanskrit), Thursday, 18 May 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

obv. you've never been to the bed-stuy salvation army, great records there.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 18 May 2006 17:57 (nineteen years ago)

best places I've seen for country are stoop sales (in Park Slope, March to November).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 18 May 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

there's usually several hundred country LPs, mostly from the sixties & seventies, at academy in williamsburg.

electro-acoustic lycanthrope (orion), Thursday, 18 May 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

obv. you've never been to the bed-stuy salvation army, great records there

lol, that place is a shitstorm. actually, that's where i found the three pharoah sanders covers WITH NO RECORDS in them.

are we talking about the one on Quincy near Broken Angel? Pass.

and there are lot's of other sites, but all of them are fake... (sanskrit), Thursday, 18 May 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

yeah that one! i always thought it was great, but it could've gone downhill.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 18 May 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks, chaps. I feel an itinerary coming on.

I found a really lovely 70s copy of Gregory's "Mr Isaacs" in a thrift store on (something like) 21st St nr 2nd or 3rd or something, might even have been a Sally Army place, but largely speaking my thrift store finds in NYC have been limited. This is no doubt because I simply don't know the right places, but I always assume big city charity shopping is a largely fruitless process.

Tim (Tim), Friday, 19 May 2006 07:14 (nineteen years ago)

this thread inspired me last night to visit some places i've been meaning to get to:

Birdel's Record Shop
http://www.bedstuygateway.com/2006/03/bedstuy_custome.html

nice gospel + r&b shop, rumored to have some excellent soul + r&b vinyl. no dice on wax tho. owner told me its not coming back down to the sales floor until late June.

Dope Jams
http://www.dopejams.net/

cons:
place reeks of Nag Champa, it clung to some of the stuff i brought home
dimly lit, so its hard to see what they have

pros:
well stocked, good prices. got an ugly edit i've had my eye on for $12. would have cost me $20 at TTL.
pretty decent rock and jazz stock, dance is the speciality though.
staff knowledgable and friendly. they tried to get me to come back this coming Saturday, Joe Clausell is doing an instore at 5pm.

if anyone wants to really delve into outer borough stores, this is a good starting point (CALL AHEAD):

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

i think i am going to the Social Registry showcase this Saturday. i think it starts pretty late. how late will you guys be on at Capones?

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Friday, 19 May 2006 15:08 (nineteen years ago)

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:40 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

walked by Somethin' Else tonight and noticed the place is gutted

:(

sanskrit, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

They plan to reopen soon elsewhere in Park Slope.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 06:47 (eighteen years ago)

down near 16th street most likely, where most of the indie-rockers moved when priced out of north slope anyway.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 13:09 (eighteen years ago)

you must be talking about the sweets, not the viciouses.

sanskrit, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

Is 'Music Matters' still there, on 7th ave and 13th or something?

calstars, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

totally. Do any viciouses live in South Brooklyn at all? Maybe the ones working their way into Crown Heights, a few in Red Hook perhaps.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 6 June 2007 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

I feel like making pilgrimage friday. Any recs?
