Tell me about awesome NYC-area wedding bands

I'm getting married next June on Long Island. We're having a DJ for the party after the party, but we'd like to have a band for the reception. I would love a great band with real range! And lots of percussion!

Anybody had or heard a great, interesting wedding band in the New York area?

Who would have ever believed there'd be snarky answers to your question?

I'd recommend the band Travesty (travesty.com) they played my wedding. They were affordable, very nice and they had the entire dance floor packed all night. Excuse the awful website, they play much much better than their site would indicate.

mark my words, hilarity will ensue in a couple weeks when this thread hits #1 on google search terms "NYC wedding bands".

We had Luna back in 2000 (right after they got dropped by Elektra, which might have helped). From what we heard while talking w/booking people, most bands this side of Sonic Youth will do weddings, and it's surprisingly affordable. Yo La Tengo were supposedly available as well, but they were on tour at the time.

Black Dice played at our wedding. Passed out the earplugs beforehand. Incredible night that was.

I think this is how Sebastian Bach of Skid Row started out. I'd contact his PR people:

The William Morris Agency
skyasst@wma.com

or you can try

bookings@skidrow.com

THE FAKE ACCENTS WILL PLAY YOUR WEDDING

After They Might Be Giants won a New York Press poll for "best local band" one year, a Press writer referred to them as a "wedding band." He meant it as an insult. This was in the late 90's, I think.

(I have no idea if They Might Be Giants would actually perform at a wedding, mind you...)

Just out of curiousity, how much did it cost to get Luna to play your wedding?

I think you should hire the Zip Code Rapists. I hear they're cheap.

Oh, oh! You should get Andrew WK (he's NYC-based!) to do it, and have your couple's song be "Never Let Down," which is this decade's "Bridge over Troubled Water."

I don't want to give the figure, as I don't know how they'd feel about it, but let me stress that we were far from rich at the time [probably the lower reaches of middle class]. I'd guess that most people doing a smallish wedding with a reasonable budget could have managed it. xpost.
