Jessica Hopper is a Chicago-based music and culture critic. Her work regularly appears in Spin, The Chicago Reader and Punk Planet. She is also the music consultant for This American Life, the "alternative" blogger for MTV's URGE, a retired riot girl, and the publisher of Hit it or Quit it.

fluxblog's perpetua: hot pocket killa?

and what (ooo), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I was pretty annoyed to look at this and see that it's not just WMA but Windows only. People who want to hate on iTunes can go fuck themselves. If I'm going to have to support a monopoly (not that iTunes is) I'd much rather stick with Apple rather than put another market segment in Microsoft's pocket.

i hear theyre windows media only

and what (ooo), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 17:44 (nineteen years ago)

Hot pockets and apples would never work. Why bother with an apple if you're having the hot pocket anyway?

The Mercury Krueger (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 17:54 (nineteen years ago)

you really lose some of the high-end on the cheddar cheese when you compress them down into MP3s.

Minneapolis punk band Dillinger Four performed a song called Smells like OK Soda, criticizing the marketing techniques of large corporations in courting the "counterculture" demographic.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

that's a sweet tune! D4 roxx. it's not their best song title though, which has to be "Sorry Honey I Shit the Hot Tub"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, fuck it, all OK Soda.

haha i just tried to go to the urge website using safari on a mac laptop -- what was i thinking?!

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

Some things aren't worth the effort.

Hot Pockets are another matter. I might have mentioned before that the business school on this campus is named after the marketer who made them huge.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 21:29 (nineteen years ago)

"welcome to UCI's Hot Pockets Business School"

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 21:32 (nineteen years ago)

It would be more honest, trust me.

"sure we have music blogs. NOW GOOD LUCK FINDING THEM."

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 18 May 2006 01:53 (nineteen years ago)

how does one sign up to start an urge blog?

is it anything like MSN Spaces?

oh, wrinklepaws! (Wrinklepaws), Thursday, 18 May 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

Windows XP-compatible Xtreme Pockets

Unlimited Toothpicker (eman), Thursday, 18 May 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

Urge is a shit name. It reminds me of that also-ran music network, Fuse.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Thursday, 18 May 2006 02:52 (nineteen years ago)

That dissection of the hot pocket oddly enough makes me want to eat one even more. I mean, if I hadn't cooked myself a fairly delicious dinner. Made of WINDOWS MEDIA.

Eppy (Eppy), Thursday, 18 May 2006 02:58 (nineteen years ago)

Urge. Sounds like a new crappy soft drink.

did that ever come out on DVD?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:30 (nineteen years ago)

"sure we have music blogs. NOW GOOD LUCK FINDING THEM."

Are you missing much? It's not like I'm going lose sleep at nights because I couldn't find J-Shep's keen musical insights.

The Mercury Krueger (Ex Leon), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:33 (nineteen years ago)

But but but you will not be hip.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:36 (nineteen years ago)

i just visited urge.com, and i'm sort of confused. is it a set of mp3-blogs that you have to pay to read? if so, WHAT A JOKE!

lf (lfam), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

URGE celebrates all music. If you're a fan, there's something for you at URGE. URGE has music from 18 musical genres and over 400 styles available to play or download, plus a lot more on our 130+ radio stations. Here's a complete list of the musical (and non-musical) genres on URGE:

Alternative
Blues/Folk
Children's
Classical
Comedy/Spoken Word
Country
Easy Listening/Vocal
Electronic/Dance
Hip-Hop
Inspirational
Jazz
Latin
Metal
Pop
R&B
Rock
Soundtracks/Musicals
World/Reggae

did they just copy the main id3 tag genres? is that how people think of music now? at least they didn't list "alternative & punk."

lf (lfam), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

it turns out I was wrong about the blogs--they're right on the front page. I was looking on the top and left sides rather than the page itself.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:46 (nineteen years ago)

and glancing them over they seem OK enough. some writers I like very much, and a few I'm not as familiar with.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

i tried to visit using opera (set to emulate IE), but no, they really want me to use windows. most misguided big name cross-promotional effort ever?

lf (lfam), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:58 (nineteen years ago)

I said this on the other thread and I hold to it: URGE should've chosen to title the service URDJ and pronounced it "urge". Woulda been clever.

Can any of the participants in this produce a deep link to the blogs? Or do you have to be a subscriber? Matt? Jessica?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Friday, 19 May 2006 17:28 (nineteen years ago)

Washington Post gives a good analysis of the URGE service and suggests that your money is still better spent with iTunes and Napster.
