Q. What do you think? Their best ever?

matt.lockett@gmail.com (banksy), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, is it out!? Raa.

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:48 (nineteen years ago)

It is indeed and it's beautiful.

Banksy (banksy), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

It's not bad, yes. Need to hear it more before judging.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 17:01 (nineteen years ago)

new tunes sounded great at the lowry on saturday. one hell of a band.

Ok, only had one listen, and I was semi distracted during it, but...this is a strange one. I definitely liked it a lot! But I think every shack/strands album so far has had a very defined, distinct feel (to grossly oversimplify, I'd say something like Waterpistol = post stone roses indie pop, strands = whimsical english folk, hms fable = glossy britpop, tom/weather = spacey psychedelic pastoral).

And with this new one, there's still a handful of tracks that have a new and different feel (those with lovely bright brass sections on them, certainly...and some which had more playful melodies than I'd expect form shack, and denser, more arranged vocal harmonies), but there's also a lot of reference back...I was hearing various tracks and thinking "this sounds like it's off fable...and this one could've been on waterpistol...and that's really strandsy!" and so on.

Not sure which was which yet, I'll have a clearer idea once I've got more familiar with it. But, you know, the mixture of feels is definitely a good thing. It's kind of like having a shack best-of album, except all the songs are new. Yay!

And as ever with shack albums, I wish the John Head tracks weren't on there. Michael's songs are invariably SO much better than his brother's are.

Shack?!? More like

ahhh fuck it, too easy.

dear god do i disagree. john's songs are my favourites on both the strands album and hms fable, and he contributed a b-side to one of the singles from the last album that was my favourite track of the entire recording sessions.

Wow, really? I just find his vocals weak, and his melodies obvious, and his arrangements pub-rocky.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 18 May 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

John wrote Beautiful which is rubbish and sounds like Cast BUT he was responsible for Cornish Town and Loaded Man and that's enough for me.

If I loved HMS Fable and The Strands plus bits of Waterpistol but was utterly meh about Tom/Weather, will I like this?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 May 2006 15:52 (nineteen years ago)

I think you'll like about 55-70% of it.

Loaded Man is the primary source of all my John hatred! If you're going to write an 8 minute dirge during which you do little more than whinge about something as obvious as lad culture, then YOU NEED TO USE MORE THAN TWO CHORDS!

I'll give you Cornish Town though, that was ok.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:21 (nineteen years ago)

John's role within Shack has grown over the years and get the impression that he channels Mick and is integral in the arrangements.

His songs are :

Loaded Man
Beautiful
Cornsh Town
Miles Apart
Kilburn High Road
Carousel
Not Afraid of Loving You
New Day
Moonshine
Find A Place
Butterfly

Aside from Loaded Man for the reasons made by JimD I think his writing is getting stronger.

Mick's a unique character but without John I don't think he'd get around to much. Although a solo album is mooted.

matt.lockett@gmail.com (banksy), Thursday, 18 May 2006 16:34 (nineteen years ago)

The fact it only uses two chords is one of the things I like about it!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 18 May 2006 17:23 (nineteen years ago)

Whats Loaded Man from?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 18 May 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

Ahh I just remembered its the Michael Head & The Strands album. I was trying to think what SHack it was from hehe. I had to go dig out my strands cd to check after I posted that.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Thursday, 18 May 2006 17:43 (nineteen years ago)

Beautiful
Cornsh Town

are two of my very favourite Shack/Strands tunes.

Only had in a couple of days but it is growing on me to the extent I could well imagine ranking it above everything but the Strands album. It actually feels much more complete than Tom/Weather to me which while it did have some strong tracks felt a bit of a trasition between the Britpop of HMS fable and the psychedelic/jazz(sounds terrible I known but thats the best description I can come up with) style we hear now.

As to Johns songs while I personally thought Carousel & Miles Apart where the best things on Tom/Weather I agree he doesnt quite have the same character as Michael so when the songs/arrangements are not first rate they end up a little bland.

five months pass...
Felt the need to revive this because

1. this album is really wearing well, after a slow start. I find that with most Shack albums (HMS excepted) it takes me an awfully long time to really distinguish the mid-tempo songs. Kind of feel like a different song sequence might have made it easier to sort out the acoustic-guitar ballads.

2. Didn't want to start a thread on Zilch, but you know after shelling out something like $40 for the Japanese import reissue and thinking that I was throwing money away for the sake of being a completist, I'm not regretting the purchase a bit. Have completely gotten over the problematic production and it's been on constant play for a month or so. I'd had a CDR of a vinyl rip, that I never really appreciated... Wouldn't exactly recommend that everyone rush out and get a copy, but it's turned out to be a surprisingly worthwhile impulse purchase.

totally agree on zilch. i had the lp (twice) but for some reason it took getting the import disc and really listening to it to appreciate the album

This is a band I've felt guilty for not investigating more for years. I used to have HMS Fable...and a 7" with coloured dots on it from the early 90's - "I Know You Well"? I think that was it. Then I've got this CD that came with Uncut magazine this year that has "Working Family" on it which i says is not included on Miles & Gil. It isn't that great of a track, so I guess that doesn't tell me much.

I'd kindof like to hear Waterpistol. I remember reading about that a long time ago, critics fawning over it. It was really rare and expensive then. Don't know if it still is or not.

A Chocolate Ball of Sweet Confectionary Fire (Bimble...), Thursday, 9 November 2006 01:47 (nineteen years ago)

i found it quite easily and cheaply a few years ago - i don't think it has been reissued though.

actually it appears to still be in print
