The "New York Dolls" Reunion Album

Has anybody but me heard it? It's called One Day It Will Please Us To Remember Even This, it's on Roadrunner, and it's staggeringly awful. It sounds like a cross between Buckcherry and the Georgia Satellites, with Leo Gorcey on vocals. Except both Buckcherry and the Georgia Satellites wrote better songs than this. Okay, maybe a guy who made four Buster Poindexter albums has already established he has no idea how to identify a dry well, but this thing is really misbegotten.

They were great at Avalon!

i haven't seen it, but is the documentary New York Doll good?

Documentary is great, and very sad.

The new record can't be worse than the Big Star reunion album. Can it?

"It sounds like a cross between Buckcherry and the Georgia Satellites, with Leo Gorcey on vocals."

The two Harry Smiths albums were fantastic! M@tt OTM about the GA Satellites. Would it be a good album in any sense if it didn't have the words "new york dolls" on it?

Not to my ear. When it's not (poorly) aping the Satellites (who I liked a lot at the time, too, and should probably revisit, and the same goes for Buckcherry), it's a platform for Johansen to do poor man's Asylum-era Tom Waits balladry. He's using the name to get folks' money, then fobbing off substandard product. I can't wait to read David Fricke's 5-star Rolling Stone review.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 18 May 2006 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

haha yeah fricke's wee-wee must be engorged with anticipation!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 18 May 2006 19:59 (nineteen years ago)

btw despite what i was saying abt. liking the GA Satellites, i have absolutely no trouble believing pdf that a new new york dolls record is mediocre....i can't imagine it being otherwise...

this will be fricke's godess in the doorway.

watched 'new york doll' a few days ago, awesome movie, very sweet/touching. the performance after the credits was a really nice touch, too

the first DJ solo album was mainly Johansen/Sylvain (and plenty balladful!), it's a shame he didn't market it as a throwback to that (not that the $ is obviously more potentialful for a Dolls album).

Zwan (miccio), Thursday, 18 May 2006 20:41 (nineteen years ago)

that it isn't, I mean

Love that Leo Gorcey reference in relation to a New York Doll. After all, The Dead End Kids were American pop culture's non-musical proto-punks and there is a similarity in the accents and the trash talk. So who is the Huntz Hall Doll? Arthur?

Carlos Keith (Buck_Wilde), Thursday, 18 May 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

I don't think so. It doesn't really seem like any of them were Huntz Hall.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

well, Iggy

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Thursday, 18 May 2006 21:23 (nineteen years ago)

Too depressing.
