i know, i know, their first demo was great and they were great live that time at that place. but this stuff just reconfirms all my hyperbolic fears about alt-rock nation and its ability to bore me senseless.

I like the first couple songs on their first album. I assume the new one is more of the same, and who really needs two Stills albums?

DougD (DougD), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:34 (nineteen years ago)

it sounds like this: *churn churn churn* *mumble mumble* *Zzzzzzzz*

it's like they are making butter the old-fashioned way and then they forget where they are and then they dream that coldplay is eating their brains

but not in a good way

I first saw them at a festival a couple years back after hearing a lot about them. They were pretty boring, and then one of them shouted "Vive le Quebec libre" or some other seperatist bullshit, so I just walked out. Never felt a need to play any of their records after that experience.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Friday, 19 May 2006 02:55 (nineteen years ago)

see, if they had shouted that out in one of the songs i listened to, i might still be listening. any sign of life would have been greatly appreciated. are they friends with the dears? i like them. or i like the ep i have by them. i think it's called *protest* or something. they've got some pep!

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 19 May 2006 03:01 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I like whichever Dears ep I've heard (is there more than one?)This new Stills (only one I've heard) does not get better. I forced myself to listen to the whole thing. Sometimes albums do get better, and I was looking for review possibilities. I found none that should remain unburied. Scott, really enjoyed your Bitter Tea review in Voice; what did you think of Rehearsing My Choir in particular?

The Stills are pathetic. Not only is their music blander than unflavored soy milk, their transparent and calculating bandwagon hopping should make She Wants Revenge blush. They go from jumping off the 2001 New York Smiths-ripoff Interpol-supporting blandness of their debut to the dischordant piano/countrified riffs of their more "genuine" version which ends up sounding like a knock-off of Wolf Parade.

They even changed their look accordingly:

I'd say they're pretty much the Silverchair of Nu-Indie.

"I'd say they're pretty much the Silverchair of Nu-Indie."

Silverchair are probably the Hitler of music-geek debates.

Stills' first album: good. New one: not so much.

How about Bush then?

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Friday, 19 May 2006 14:31 (nineteen years ago)

Perhaps Bush can be the Goebbels to Silverchair's Hitler.
But you have a point. At least Silverchair were barely out of prepubescence so they had an excuse for their musical malfeasance. And I'd choose Natalie Imbruglia any day of the week over Gwen Stefani.

Speaking from experience, you should all fear the wrath of Ryan Adams now.

the stills are the whipping boys of the mtl music scene these days for their alleged bandwagon-hopping

you beat me scott. i only got to track 3. and i liked the last album.

pinder (pinder), Friday, 19 May 2006 17:06 (nineteen years ago)

i saw them live several years ago and was bored senseless. the only good thing about that show was the fact that carlos d. from interpol was in attendance and some guy shouted "herpes!" between two songs.

gear (gear), Friday, 19 May 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

i liked the first album also. i made it to track 5 on this one...we should work on a class action suit.

Jimmy_tango (Jimmy_tango), Saturday, 20 May 2006 02:51 (nineteen years ago)

s1ocki (slutsky), Saturday, 20 May 2006 03:32 (nineteen years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Saturday, 20 May 2006 03:48 (nineteen years ago)
